Its very strange . When i was first conscious of my mothers sense of duty to help those that were in need . It was during 1944 . We were not wealthy, middle class . My Mother was Welsh. And seeing this film I realise this was her education that gave her 'We share what we have. Social work, Womens Institute. before the NHS came. This film gave me an insight . I remember being annoyed at the attention given to others. I was 6yrs.

It was only one year after this films release that Aneurin Bevan launched the National Health Service.A great Welshman! Working class communities only survived by pulling together and knowing that they could depend on their neighbours to put aside any differences in times of need and do whatever was needed to help. Men would pass the cap round for a new widow,women would help during birth and nursing the sick. Once the industry was shut it was so easy to break up these bonds.

My mother was a primary school teacher in a neighbouring village to Aberfan in the 60's when a slag heap collapsed and smothered the village school killing half the children of the village. I was born a few years later and she could only speak about it in a near whisper. Anyone who remembers Aberfan would never forget the horror, but too many people are brought up to not know our recent history and the cost in human lives to make a very small number of people rich. Now we just export the same problems to poorer countries out of sight. There's more going on in this story than first meets the eye with the eccentric characters and the decrepit House. It's a lightweight, unusual entertainment at first glance but try and see it through the eyes of the generation who would have watched it in the cinema,it has layers to it then.

The most bombed city in Wales during World War 2 was Cardiff. The worst night for Cardiff was January 2, 1941 when 165 people died and over 400 were injured, and approximately 350 homes were demolished.

I didn't read through all the 157 comments to date, but none of the more recent ones commented that the film's title is most likely an allusion to the three witches who appear at the beginning of "Shakespear's Hamlet". They appear to Hamlet when he is patrolling the battlements of the castle and warn him of the calamitous events that are soon to occur. After this visitation Hamlet meets one of guards and asks him "Saw you the three weird sisters?". People raised in the 50's and 60's may recall this line; younger folks probably will not, if they even studied Hamlet in school at all.

Excellently- chilling portrayals by those playing the bizarre sisters, plus some fine acting generally. Quite atmospheric without necessarily drifting into the horror-film category - and spiced with a little humour by way of light relief.

Just started watching . Like the three old sisters . I like the social commentary around 4:30 regarding the preventable old mine works collapse accident which kills some working class men and family members in their homes at night . the working man responds to the cleric saying only god knows why and says " it's the criminal negligence of the profit makers who don't care a damn in hell for the people that make their profit for them " . Hope this doesn't turn into a stupid horror flick .

The amazing thing is, back then, and even today, to a lesser extent, they truly believed that because a person was rich, they were really better than, wiser than, worth more than the the everyday working people! It absolutely astonishes me! There was no way of convincing them of anything else either!
@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts

Back then??! Have you seen what's been happening in Britain??! The arrogant, grasping Eton set, inherited wealth etc..who have been squeezing the country dry to line the pockets of them and their mates while most people do nothing more than grumble and turn on each other! And look at the royal family!! Giving 'an accident of birth ' a whole new meaning. What a shameful and shameless shower they are at tax payers expense.. when even working people are relying on food banks. It's disgraceful. When the queen died we should have shut the whole sordid lot of them down.. it's the 21st century! Because for some bizarre reason too many people still think how you describe we go on subsidising their exploits while old people can't leave hospital and return to their home because there are no services to look after them, record numbers of young people with mental health problems and no services..it goes on and on...

A very unusual film. Combines all the elements of Welsh nationalism, religion, politics, stoicism, community spirit with grotesque tragicomedy, and tragi-farce thrown in for good measure, and pulls it off. All credit to the director and writers on of whom was Dylan Thomas.

Gayle. The workers were all victims in those days. Some as young as 10 years of age. Safety was non existent in the workplace. Thousands of miners perished underground while the owners got fat and took to their beds, ridden with gout, from their disgusting excesses. Shame on you for your ignorant, " naiive ", post.

I thought the sagacious Welshman giving a lecture to his dogs on the evils of capitalism was a whole league above the rest of the characters, good as the rest were. And should one suspect a big spoonful of Dylan Thomas's mischief in it? I also wonder how many people realised that the title was a reference to the three witches in Macbeth. I don't know why I've never heard of this film before. It stands reasonable comparison with The Old Dark House.

Could they remake this movie today I wonder? It's set during a time that none of us can truly understand, no wait, perhaps those that have lived and made a living in our coal mining towns. And what about those willing to execute the desires of those sisters and all that are just as willing to turn a blind eye to their evil deeds, our republican senators perhaps are such. . . I think I've answered my own questions, quite a similar movie could be remade today. Utterly entertaining and made more poenint because it was filmed in black and white. If made today I believe it'd loose it's creepiness flush with color. Timing played an intricate role as well, good guy shows up just in time, evil deads elicited from innocence foiled by miscalculations, and ultimate justice prevailing or was it? No hope for those now left behind in a dying town.
@GrumblingGrognard
@GrumblingGrognard 3 года назад
PLEASE! Why not base it in current day US? We have entire counties in this nation where people can no longer drink the water from wells their families have used for generations due to fracking. We have at least two entire towns lost to coal fires that have burned for decades.

Three preternaturally caricatured rewrites of The Three Fates, corsetted and thriftily regal semiprecious jewel-festooned bird-eating tarantulas, hydraulically gliding about that Witch-Hat motif Welsh-Gothic undead nightmare of a house, and periodic Spitfire strafing-run monologue bursts by Dylan Thomas. If you've a schorl funeral tiara handy, *do* wear it whilst watching. I could just *taste* the mutant hybrid revenant of Dame Flora and Uta Hagen lurking in each shadow ... schadenfreude Edward Albee might well have envied.
