Senior Specialist in Chinese Export Art Becky MacGuire takes us inside the Tibor Collection, which was amassed over some 40 years.
All works of art embody their histories, in what they depict, the way they were made, how they’ve been used, or the hands through which they’ve passed. In the category of Chinese Export Art, this is true on nearly every count. Each piece affirms a history and a pattern of collecting that foreshadow the dynamic, global nature of art, design, and connoisseurship today.
‘Chinese Export porcelain is porcelain ware that was made in China specifically for export to the Western world,’ explains Senior Specialist in Chinese Export Art, Becky MacGuire. ‘In Europe, we only had clay pottery until about the 1710s or 1720s. Nobody knew how to make true, hard-paste, fine-white porcelain. Only the Chinese, who had been making it for hundreds of years.’

A pretty astonishing collection, and right on the heels of Asia Week in March. Too bad they couldn't have done the sale during that time period.

You heard her, Europe only has clay pottery before 17th century AD. Porcelain ceramic was produced in Europe after a Jesuit missionary in China got hold of the recipe.

The English made hard-paste porcelain 100 years before Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus at Dresden, who probably stole the 'recipe'. There are 3 extant pieces, 1 of which was in Buck House and mysteriously 'disappeared'.
