I flew a pair of Hollister Jerkins for 14 years, and they were incredible. The downside was that both could reach a high pitch in just two minutes, and if you weren't ready to flush quarry, things could come undone, and a flight might not work out as planned. Also, one of the birds had an almost dog-like disposition which i loved, and the other was a very touchy fellow, indeed, which took the fun out of handling him.The peregrine personality is preferable in my mind. My next bird will be a tiercel hybrid, or perhaps a big Peals. Great conversation, btw.

You covered a lot of subjects in this conversation that I had wondered myself. And it was good to hear you thought on flying G/P with over 40 years experience in the game .

Just watched your video, enjoyed it, Peregrine's are good birds, hard to beat, but I have to say I'd take a good goshawk, can't beat them, it moves they kill it, and can do things most people wouldn't believe, flying blue grouse in the mountains, that's good sport, good day
@stevesomach

Yes blue grouse sounds exciting!

I fly both, peregrines and goshawks, and if you train the peregrine for pursuit flight, you get the same reaction out of them as the goshawk. My immature male peregrine was flying down the hares of the fist, even if I didn't teach him to do that and even if he never saw the hare before. Of course, I don't want male peregrine to do that, but in my opinion the only advantage goshawk has is initial acceleration, but after 50 meters, peregrine is overtaking goshawk easily, and it can chase the prey for miles at top speed, and can make some breathtaking maneuvers during pursuit. It can also ring up during chase and dive at the pace goshawk never will. My pursuit peregrines also go in to the cover, and in to the trees after the prey, but that is also one area where goshawk has advantage, but when you hunt at open space, that is not an issue. That being said, some people like goshawks more regardless, and that is the beauty of diversity!

I am very interested to hear you talk about Gyrs being smart enough to preempt things by hanging near the pointing dogs. I have precisely that problem with my Peregrine. She has become less and less spectacular as she has cottoned on to the dogs and what they represent. Wonderful discussion. Thank you so much for sharing.

I'm no expert with falcons, but, if i may ask, do you think that tiercels are more "interested"in flying because it's their natural role in the family, whereas the falcon sits with the chicks, and feed from the tiercel's game...in fact, it seems that the falcon often flys off to feed from game thay the tiercel has 'stored' away from the nest, instead of actually having to hunt, especially when their are young'uns about? It sounds like Gyrfalcons have a bit more of the character of Hariss's Hawks, and can become real partners, but learn, too quickly, the easiest way to get the quarry!

Good insight into the use of the Gyr xPeregrine for falconry from two of the sports greats. Don’t leave it too long for the next chat. Or maybe you could do a series of interviews with other falconers at the top of their game.

Thank you for this video this is a live falconry book for me as I'm from India. Flying falcons is gone with the past here only shikra is in use. Currently I'm flying calidus tiercels and trying to put them on Cattle Egret.

Without a blink of doubt i would agree gyr x peregrine terciel is absolute rocket and they wont stop going up and to an extent theybwong give up on a chase specially the way we fly them here off the fist out of the hood on strong homers and passengers alike but the female hybrids slows down and my gxp female who was in her 7th season abandons chase many times or wont wanna go up any ways she died gastro entritis and looking for a new gxp terciel and mind is set to find a wild hacked one this coming season

Falconer friend of mine is tame hacking gyr x peregrines and pure peregrines together, but according to his experience pure peregrine male was for example faster in a climb and more maneuverable and was able to catch almost two times more wood pigeons than hybrid male. In his opinion the only advantage gyr x peregrine has is its size and the fact it can handle bigger game.
@shaheershams2110
@shaheershams2110 4 месяца назад
Of course a male peregrine is always something except the fact that they ate intolerant to cold weather and bigger prey but when they get a chance I have seen them hit some good sized seagulls knocked cold
@Semendrija123
@Semendrija123 4 месяца назад
@@shaheershams2110 yes, male peregrine has the best flight/hunting style in my opinion, and the type of maneuvers they can do in the air, no female can repeat. I have also measured my best males at 120 km/h in level flight, and they can basically kill every prey the female can in my country. They have no problem killing 2 kg male pheasants in air, and on the ground, and I have two brothers that would go after buzzards! Extremely aggressive blood line, but I agree, most of them are not like that, and they don't like the cold 😄
