Mad, petty, and perfectly designed to kill. How two tigers, across the world, both decided to go full Michael Myers on some bros.

Before I started this episode I was like "Oh no don't tell me the tigers are homophobic somehow" but then proceded to stan this siberian tiger like the idea of a beast like that just WAITING for you at your home is both so so scary and iconic

Okay, the thing I absolutely love about this, is that on its face, it sounds like this tiger just has spooky knowledge, but then you start to think about the situation from the POV of a tiger. The people its going after? Had likely or definitely been in Makov's cabin. And Makov did two very stupid things. 1. Steal a tiger's food IN FUCKING WINTER 2. Shoot a tiger. Anyone else who would have been in Makov's "den" were now potential threats that had to be dealt with. The pissing on stuff was just territorial, but the stealing of mattresses was DEFINITELY extra petty "i'm making your den mine" Anyways, great piece per usual!

I bet the tiger recognized the cabins as the people's "den".

I'm a hundred percent on the animals' side in these sorts of cases. Especially if they're in a zoo. And even in nature we've left them too little space to live in. It just sucks that animals keep getting put down for aggressive behaviour that's really almost always some asshole human's fault.

One major reason why Mike Tyson went bankrupt back in the day is that he decided that tigers would make great pets, not considering that the cost of the care and feeding of these massive beasts does not exactly come cheap....

I love how the implication with Tatiana is, tigers could have left, just, whenever they wanted. They just didn't.

Also, note for Hoots in case it doesn't come up: A necropsy is the same as an autopsy but for animals!
@VinceWhitacre
@VinceWhitacre 9 месяцев назад
This is correct, but it's also kinda gross... auto just means "self," there's nothing specifically human about it. I am guessing when vets started doing necropsies, some goofy shits flipped out about them actually caring for non-human dead. I think the real weirdness is the word "autopsy" itself. I mean, you're not investigating your own death. 😅 I *think* the idea is that the examiner reporting the autopsy is supposed to be the one who did it (though I'm not sure that applies if a coroner is writing up a death certificate after an autopsy a different ME did? then again, the autopsy report isn't the same thing as the death cert, soooooo 🤷) Tldr: we should just call human necropsies "necropsies" too.
@nanibgalthelinguophile
@nanibgalthelinguophile 9 месяцев назад
@@VinceWhitacre The word comes from Greek "autopsia" which translates to "seeing with one's own eyes". The 'auto' does not refer to the cadaver, but rather the person doing the operation, literally dissecting the body to see for one's self the cause of death.

@@nanibgalthelinguophile yes, hence my second paragraph 😊

Point being, we shouldn't use different words. Pretty much nobody who hasn't had to have a pet necropsied (or isn't a vet) knows what a necropsy is.

Don't fuck with cats. Especially the giant murder cats. My cute little emotional support cat could murder me when she goes into velociraptor mode, if she wanted to. I would never purposefully piss off a tiger.

This is so amazing. Wow! Also cool that you referred to the "Ologies" podcast, another great one. And crows, yeah, scary smart. I have a tiny parrot, and I know how smart she is. She's like a toddler, and an absolute brat in ways that you all would also stan. A parrotlet, allegedly, but I believe she's a direct descendant of T-Rex. :) This is a fascinating little deviation from your usual (and so was your episode last week about my two favorite pirates ever). I love it and I love you all!

We need more episodes about man eating animals. There was a tiger in India that killed and ate over 400 people before being tracked down and killed by an expert tracker. There were two male lions in Africa that ate around 300 Indian workers working on a railroad for British colonists as well (they actually made this one into a pretty decent horror film). Then there’s Gustav, a Burundian crocodile believed to have eaten over 300 people and who was so large that he actively had to hunt humans to survive at all. Man eaters are a crazy phenomenon that humbles you real quick

This made me think of a couple things: The first story reminded me of a time when I was at the Memphis Zoo where the lion enclosure is right next to the entrance. As soon as I got in, the male lion was making barking sounds--it's a thing they do to announce their territory. That sound set off that monkey part of my brain and I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end--it was fear on a primal level. I'd never felt that before, it was pretty amazing. So I definitely believe that when a big cat actually roars at you, you feel it in your soul. The second story reminded me of another time at the same zoo where two little girls were meowing like cats at the leopards and the mom encouraged it, despite the leopards getting visibly agitated (she thought the cats were coming closer because they kids were "calling" them and was just so delighted about it). I thought, "Wow, that's just having way too much faith in that enclosure." Sure enough, a few months later, I heard that story about the tiger in the San Francisco zoo breaking out and killing the kids who were taunting it.

IMO animals cant be wrong or evil because its a concept invented by humans and tigers are too busy being cool to worry about human made morals

Okay, I'm here at 00:00:33 because I SUSPECT that this is the story of the same tiger spoken of in The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival by John Vaillant, in which case I am super psyched and also if I had the chance to teach a high school class a nonfiction book, I would absolutely choose that one, so excited

Once my local zoo had an after dark event. All of the big cats were much more alert than usual. Both of the lion and tiger enclosures have windows were you can get close to the animals. When I went up to the lions, they were clearly curious about my wheelchair, but not in a predatory way. However, when I went up to the tiger, it freaked me out because first of all, tigers are huge, and second of all, had there not been glass between us, I'm sure I would have been its next meal.
