Elliot takes a spin in the new Wuling Bingo: the latest small, affordable electric car from the company behind the adorable Mini EV. But while the Mini was a hit in China only, this slightly bigger brother has its sights firmly set on the Western market too - could this be the simple, small, affordable EV we've been impatiently waiting for?

If that car went on sale at the UK price shown (circa £7K) not only would it sell like hotcakes, but it would be a real kick up the backside of legacy auto makers and completely disrupt the way we buy cars. Unfortunately, like most of the Chinese EVs that make it over here, it will double in price. But even so, at £14K, it would probably still sell well.
@davidcolin6519
@davidcolin6519 Год назад
There is no way that it will sell at that price though, is there? It is more likely to sell at about double that price, which puts it head to head with some of the cheapest (and slowest) ICEs on the UK market. That would still make it an interesting alternative, although I don't think it would have any of the safety features that the legacy makers would include. OTOH, a BEV for 14K is still interesting.

That price is jaw dropping. Honestly, I'd buy one tomorrow for that. But you can at least double it, if it comes to the UK. That's still pretty good. I'd like the top speed to get to a shade over 70mph in all conditions, and I'm 100% sure that's doable. There will always be that odd occasion where a quick spurt down the bypass is required, and I've little doubt that little electric drive unit is just software limited, so pump it up to 75mph please, and we'll call it a day. 👍

Definitely. I think that's my big gripe with this car too. I don't exactly plan on getting from 0 to 60 in two seconds when I live in a cul de sac Essentially, I currently have a Toyota Yaris and if there's an electric equivalent of that, then that's perfect for me. It does however need to get to say 75Mph as you say. A top speed of less than that is a deal breaker imo

It's refreshing to see a basic car in the electric range that doesn't have wild performance or an electric hatch back. US and EU manufacturers need to go after this asap. The second an actually reasonably cheap EV releases over here, people will gobble them up like nobody's business. This car looks to be a perfect successor to my beloved 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV (which I still own and, conceivably, will be happily driving for at least a few more years,) but with a bigger battery on the upper trim level variant. If it's LFP chemistry, I'd say "bingo!" again. Same ~100" wheelbase as the i-MiEV, same 4-door w/ hatch form factor and same no frills approach to interior accommodations. Yeah . . . bingo! GM (I hope you're listening). . . with your business relationship with Wuling, you could bring this car to the US. Do what you need to do to "Americanize" it . . . and I don't mean install a gun rack, mud flaps, jacked suspension and knobby tires in an attempt to make it into a micro SUV that everyone will hate. No, I mean set up a factory somewhere on the North American continent and study the ever-evolving implementation of the IRA in regards to raw materials sourcing, ect. I am living in China, by far I have bought a Model 3 and a GAC Aion Y, but good EVs with good prices are keeping pop out in the market.

Styling looks like a tiny Tesla crossed with the old early 2000s Micra. A great interior too. As usual with new Chinese EV cars, Western manufacturers be afraid...

Western manufacturers aren't afraid as their lobby groups are firmly entrenched in government policy offices much as the Oil and Gas industry is. The transition is going to continue to crawl along while the rest of the world makes real progress.

The 100 km speed limit is a bit low, 120 would be better. That auto handbrake I've never had it so wouldn't miss it. If you've never had something you don't usually miss it!

Safety features? Like airbags, belts, ESC and TC? The Wuling air has some of these.

We need smaller cars for the average grocery runs and short commutes instead of these big-ass SUVs that are everywhere. This definitely would work in any city anywhere in the world.

What a wonderful car. I disagree that we're primarily concerned with how a car drives. I'm certainly more interested in design and features, and a great price. This looks lovely. I would much prefer a higher top speed for motorway use. Whilst this car is mainly for town use I don't want to buy a car I cant take on the occasional long journey. I agree it should have an auto handbrake. There should also have fast DC charging on every car. What was the range with the larger battery? Please bring this car to the UK.

Even if its main target buyer lives in a city/ rental company/ courtesy car etc, it would sell by the bucket load if the " beast engined" version was circa £15'000 delivered and taxed in the uk.

Great review Elliott. Ticks all the boxes. A superb car without the bloated reality of most contemporary EVs. Interior colour? Excellent. So sick of black, grey, black, carbon fibre. Couldn’t believe the boot space. Yep, I like it ‘bigly’.

Add regen braking, a slightly beefier motor so it can cruise at at least 80mph, and a single usb charger for a phone. Then it could work as a proper city car in the US/EU metro areas imho. Even a "city" car needs to get on a highway every once in a while. Oh, and does it have any airbags? That could be a challenge for those markets if not. Otherwise not a bad concept to build on.

He said its intended for global markets, that means it has to meet homologation standards. The big tires, long hood, wide interior, and big fat bumper areas all speak to meeting crash standards. The big round empty area in the center of the steering wheel, the empty flat section on the right of the dash, and the wide A and B pillars all look like they could conceal airbags. And Im sure regen comes standard, I havnt heard of any modern EVs that dont?
