Godox released the successor to the SL-60w (and it's not called the SL-60w ii). It's a different form factor, way more portable, and a lot quieter, can be battery or AC powered, and has smaller accessories.. how does it stack up against the VL-300? Well, my thoughts are in the video.

@Tommy Callaway what light kit would you say you would recommend for a large wedding venue of about 400ppl but with out out ruining the ambient and distrubing the guest, but wish to get a nice clean and soft lighting for speeches, first dance butting of caking e.t.c have been subscribed and watching alot of you lighting video and more great job

Another great video, Tommy. While this light looks incredible I do wish they could have gotten the price point down a little cheaper. At $199 I could see this thing selling like crazy. And if anyone else reads the comment, 2 thumbs up for Tommy's audio preset he mentioned. A literal 4-5 mouse clicks process and my audio has vastly improved on all of my client work.

Great review. Would be even more valuable to see your camera settings when talking about what percentage the power of the light is. Camera, Lens, aperture, ISO, etc.

Bought one of these because of this video. Got it in yesterday and it's incredible. I'm utterly shocked at the output of this light. Can definitely be used as a key light in a pinch for basic 3-point lighting setups if needed. Thanks for covering this, might not have found out about it otherwise.

Such a great review - thank you! I will get on e of these for food/product and a bit of video work. How big will the difference be with this ML60 to the Godox150? Will you recommend the softbox that is made for this light or can I just use the 95 cm softbox (with a S2 bracket) - or maybe a simple white shoot through umbrella? Thanks a lot in advance 🙏🏻

The reason your color temp readings are off by a couple hundred is because you're testing right next to a blue backdrop, which is bouncing and cooling the light more than it would without any reflective surface nearby. That's why for the more powerful VL300, the reading is even cooler than the ML60. If you do a color quality test, i'd recommend doing it in a dark room with no colored or reflective surfaces to contaminate the light.

I applaud your observance! I tested the color pointed away from the blue backdrop instead of next to it, and got readings within 30 kelvin on both lights. Thank you.

Hi Tommy! There is a light that is very similar to this one, it can work on the same batteries, it's very color accurate, cheaper, but it's made of cheap plastic... it's about the Jimbei EF II 60. I would like to see a comparison of these two lights.

9:11 they will be using using the two charged NPF batteries in series to reach the typical V-mount battery voltage. That is why two NPF batteries are required. This is also typical of any NPF to V-Mount converter plates from other brands.

It's more than that. There's a bunch of electronics in there, enough room to fit a sensor and step up transformer at the very least.. When using a non-regulated NPF FXLion adapter from a V-mount, it doesn't turn the light on (which delivers the same voltage as the two npf's in series). If you put it in the left slot it will turn the display on but not the light, and if you put it in the right slot, nothing happens. really strange.

They already make a bowens mount accessory for this! It was apparently designed to fit inside Godox S2 speedlight mount!

Hi Tommy, it would be great if you could compare the performance of the ML60 vs the Sokani X60, this last gives you same portability and a bit of more flexibility I think, since it has a bowens mount and a useful bag, for just US$ 169.00

I got really excited for the next generation SL-60W, but at that price point I feel like they are missing the point for a cheap entry level led, since i can actually buy 3! SL-60W's(a set of 2 is 176euro) for the price of 1 ML60 and still have money left. But i have to admit is an interesting light!

very nice! I have a question bit off track. Which kind of stand do you use for the lights? They seem sturdy and good. It's just that the ones I used bend and fall because of the weight of the light + softbox

I usually use impact rolling stands / impact C stands (from B&H) - super heavy duty, high quality stands. they also sell pre-filled sandbags fairly cheap, and you should always have one on the base of any stand that has a light with a modifier on it. Keeps things nice and safe, won’t tip over.

I hope that some manufacturer makes a light with usb-c soon. Nowadays usb-c can provide 100w output, and we all have usb-c power banks. Why they keep making lights that use the super bulky V-mount battery?

Iso was at 200. I filmed on the GH5, so anything above that starts introducing a lot of noise. lol

Onnnnnnnnnne more question for you. Most V-Mount batteries are 14V. Looking around for D-Tap to DC power cables, I see most of them listed are 12V. Would these not work with the ML60? I don't seem to find any 14V D-Tap to DC cables around.

Can I ask you ONE more question please? I'm trying to figure out what battery system to use with my ML60. I don't have any other LED lights, and don't really plan on getting more (I'm a photographer, but feel I need one solid LED light in my kit- if I got another it would be the same ML60). Is there a benefit for me to go with a V Mount battery over the NP-F970 batteries that the ML60 battery clip is designed for? If I'm not using the batteries for anything else, is it worth the extra cost? It's over twice the price for comparable V Mount battery compared fo the NP-F970s..

For me, it's a personal preference - I own several V-mounts, and only a few NP - I've had several NP fail but never had a V-mount fail.

How long can you run the ML60 on that Bebob 45 battery? Could you get a couple of hours at 50% brightness?

On a 45wh battery, you could get 45 minutes at 100% because it is a 60w light... theoretically. So at 50%, 1.5 hours? Personally, I have not tested battery consumption at length though.

Having more lights doesn’t make your understanding of light better, buy one light (you can do a lot with one light and a reflector) and understand light, then complicate things, but start with the the sun when it’s there, an off camera light when it’s not there and add on as you develop your style.

Sure - but I film at night. The sun is not an option for me. :) Everyone's path is different, as long as you understand that lighting is the key, then you're moving in the right direction.

I think Godox botched it if their goal for this was as the next generation/upgrade to the SL60W for two main reasons (currently). First they priced it out of the price category at over twice the price of the SL60W, and there are a plethora of great budget Bowens mount lights in that price category now, and most importantly they aren't using a standard Bowens mount limiting the quantity and upping the price of all accessories. Now if they do come out with a Bowens mount adapter as suggested, then that would change things a little. With that said I think this is a decent and tiny kit for the price, making it a good option for a very small portable kit, but I think the current lack of a Bowens mount kills it for any of us who have a slew of Bowens modifiers and limited storage space for extra modifiers. Personally, until a Bowens mount adapter comes out for this, I would rather go with many of Godox other, bigger Bowens mount lights at this price point, unless I had a job that absolutely required something this small.

HELLLLPPP !!!! could you translate what LUX means in terms of exposure. For Example: - according to the video at 5min and 03sec: ML-60 with reflector at 1 meter away at full power = 15,500Lux. what does that equates to an exposure? Like, is it 1/60sec at f2.8 ISO 100? - according to the video at 5min and 17sec: ML-60 with softbox at 1 meter away at full power = 1500Lux. what does that equates to an exposure? - according to the video at 5min and 31sec: ML-60 with softbox and grid at 1 meter away at full power = 939 Lux. what does that equates to an exposure? Im a photographer, so these values are not familiar to me. Is there like an exposure conversion chart, or formula, that would just translate these LUX and Watts to exposure values?

Btw there is a battery pwoer version of the SL60 it just a different model name I currently have that with main power adapter / battery power. it the SLB60 currently have 2 of them, but am am looking for a very powerful but very soft fill light for wedding reception.
