@@TommyTombstoneweird concept: maybe it was a joke, considering I have a job that doesn’t require a firearm so it really doesn’t matter if I have a “duty light” or not Another weird concept: who said I was taking to you
The comparison of lights with different background lighting explains things better than any words can, excellent demonstration. This video really hits the point that all tools are not alike and the fact of you need to know what the numbers mean.
Wow .. that scenario with headlights behind him or hos beside the car with headlights on really sent this message home! I understand the problem clearly! Very cool job man..
@SageDynamics Fantastic video, thanks for taking the time to include the examples... was truly eye opening. I EDC appendix carry the TLR7 on my G17 and will be looking at the Turbo for my G34 nightstand gun.
Great video. I wanted to get a TLR7A for duty just to have a smaller holster. More comfortable when sitting in a patrol car. Decided against it when I read more about the lock out feature engaging while in the holster. Agencies issuing the light are experiencing this. I’ll stick with the TLR 1 HL and X300.
@@ajsomp how the hell are they going to get all those crayon eaters to go through a low light course? It was hard enough to get range time as is, I wonder what there plan is.
Thank you for making this comparison. It has brought things to my attention, that I never thought of. Respect. *edit to 7:00 ish comment. Civillians could come under situations where the TLR-7 isn't enough for the same reasons. If I do get one, I'll keep it for home use. I carry 4 magazines not for more ammo, but for failures.
I just did a night shoot a used a tlr7a on my concealed carry 19. I am definitely trading performance for comfort of appendix carry. When my rifle setup is 100% then ill spend them money on a sure fire. I will say your not comparing apples to apples. I appreciate the videos you make because i truely do trust your opinions and value the knowledge you share.
I run a pair of TLR7s on my 9mm and 10mm carry guns. I have no experience with being "on duty" and I trust your experience on that greatly, but for me using it for CCW and backcountry carry in the dark woods it works _for me_ . I also carry a secondary flashlight that has a lot more horsepower so I have light. Great video man, thanks as always.
And that’s great! I have one that I use for a fun gun, because all of my guns have a light. A home Defense or CCW, the TLR-7 makes perfect sense, as you either have limited ambient light in home, or compactness in a CCW roll
I used it during a low light class. From just shooting and holstering, the bezel rotated and deactivated the light. I’m glad I found out in a training environment and not on duty. TLR1HL went back on the G19.
could you do a demonstration on concealing larger a wml and/or larger pistols effectively? maybe on different body types if you could? maybe you already have and i could look. but i’d like to see your thoughts on concealing these bulkier items and maybe concealing other items as well like TQs or fixed blades or backup pistols. im gonna look through ur backlog, really appreciate your perspective and knowledge on these subjects!
Thanks, Aaron, I've been seeing a lot of these Tlr7's lately on duty weapons. Granted, the x300 are big, but you have more power and also in case you have to get someone off you in a split second !!!
The TLR-1 HL is noticeably shorter than the X300. The x300ultra and tlr-1HL are very close in performance, with the x300ultra maybe being a touch better. The x300turbo has crazy high candela, but you sacrifice a lot of flood to get it.
my first pistol light was a tlr-1hl along with a knock off one and within 50 yards its hard to tell which is more powerful. I snagged a tlr7a on a pawnshop find recently and immediately was thinking exactly what you have said and shown here.
For my Glock 45MOS carry I went with a SureFire X300T-B changed it from the X300U-B and a Trijicon RMR Type 2 1MOA On my Glock 19X I had some Additions made Slide had Glock Gen5 for serrations added and milled to run Heinie suppressor height Straight Eight sights with Trijicon RMR RM06 3.25 MOA. I added SLR Magwell to it also. Then I added a SilencerCo threaded barrel with a SureFire Ryder 9 TI2. I had a stipple job done and added a Johnny Glock Combat OEM trigger. The weaponlight is a SureFire X400V-B with an ARES Tactical holster on a Safariland QLS setup. For my Glock 19MOS CCW the difference is I use a SureFire XC2-B and I use a Blackpoint Tactical Mini Wing Light Mounted holster. Also no milling of any kind since its MOS and has the front serrations. When I used a Glock 22 and 17 I used SureFire X300U-B.
Good analysis. I have a 7a on my G19 for bedside duty. Its a good fit for inside my home. If if I strap on a belt (duty belt or war belt) I'd want a 1-HL or X300. Seems like aesthetics > function still rule the day...or wallet.
Came into this vid thinking critical thoughts but you landed the point home hard on this one with great b roll to show your points as you were making them. Great vid and explanation.
Agree 100% this is a great light for concealed carry. Most if not all my concealed carry guns have this light. LAPD is issuing this light with the FN 509. Don't think it's a duty light at all.
I tried using it for a while for my edc, and wasn’t too much of a fan. I had previously used the TLR6 on my Shield for a few years so I was initially really stoked about going from about 100 lumens to 500. However, I live in relatively urban area and ambient light was really making me feel uneasy about it’s performance. I sold my shield for a mid frame and upgraded to carrying a TLR1. I still have the 7, however I’m keeping it on my home defense gun where most likely it’ll be used in low light and if there is an engagement, it won’t be beyond 10 yards.
As a civilian, my question to an officer or anyone using a light for duty purposes would be, shouldn’t you not be using this light in some of the ways you mentioned. Such as in a nighttime traffic stop. Because then you just pointed your firearm at a potentially innocent person. Shouldn’t the gun only be aimed at someone when a real threat is posed. Therefore a regular flashlight in an opposing hand is the proper method? Asking this question honestly. Not sure what the proper legal use of a weapon light is in these instances
Love the holster, i think its going to be the go due to the axon product that turns the body cam on. Just got the holster and first thing i checked was if the TLR 1 HL fit and nope it didnt which is backwards to me
I wonder if there would need to be a discussion on what a CCW holder should look for, and if a duty light would suit their needs. Because, I could see the problems in what you demonstrated as also being problems in what a CCW might face also.
Swapped from a TLR 7 to a TLR 1 HL for the very performance reasons you listed. It's not even the brightest/most candela on the market, and it's still a huge improvement. The extra weight and bulk on my 19 are hardly noticeable carried AIWB.
Slide/light length really doesn’t matter for AIWB until it’s long enough to impede leg rotation. Most people can fit a full length slide no problem. The longer slide may even help push the grip into your body.
While I may not disagree with everything you said, let's keep things in perspective. Would more light be better in a number of circumstances? Sure. However, we cannot expect a light to be bright enough to solve all problems either. Sometimes when I experiment clearing indoors, a 1000 lumen light bouncing on things in front of me, or even bouncing off objects I want to see glares too much at times, especially considering that these are types that only has one brightness settings and usually used in situation not calm enough to fiddle wiht brightness settings. I started with an X200, and then switched to X300 soon after it came out. TLR7 has multiple times output compared to those. Sure, X300 Ultra might be twice as bright and even more intense in candela. However, these things tend to keep leap frog. I say there is a fat chance that TLR7 is brighter than about half of X300 models currently on law enforcement officer's guns which those officers purchased many years ago. Not every cops go buy the latest and greatest, and it is not like an old model X300 with not even 200 lumes is better for no other reason that it is a Surefire. But, I don't see anyone urging cops to replace the old X300. Okay, maybe you might. And, it is not always about brightness. I find it not practical to flip down the bad flip up-down switch design of the X300 if I need to shoot one haded with any reasonable degree of ease. While I do appreciate Surefire's reliability and toughness, ergonomic or other area wise, it is a company that is pathetic in terms of innovation. I am not even talking about something mindblowing. Even in simple things like a better switch design, there is very little improvement in anything from them.
The 7 has a place on my normal work carry gun because it's small and my workplace doesn't let us carry. Any other time the normal pistol comes out with a full size light.
Any recommendations for people with Glock 22 Gen3 as I have heard there are malfunctions with mounted lights? Others say to change the coils in the mags or use heavier ammo (gr). Suggestions Streamlight tlr7x or Surefire x3000 turbo for Glock 22 Gen3???
Agreed, i made the switch to a surefire x300u turbo when it came out from a tlr7a and i came to the same reasoning. Before the 7a, i had a tlr1HL. Love the output and strobe but the footprint and output would blind you on white walls or background.
There is also a trend toward coupling the smaller lights with duty holsters that have a more compact opening. Sig and Aliengear just released a new duty holster that specifies the use of the TLR7/Foxtrot2. It prevents access to the trigger while holstered. I believe Safariland has done the same thing with their new SafariVault holster. That doesn’t negate the deficiencies of the smaller lights, but it’s a trend based on a perceived need, not cosmetics.
@@ja0298 at least on the Sig/Aliengear partnership, it is, in part, an attempt to restrict access to the trigger while the gun is holstered. It’s one of the areas that has been identified as contributing to the “my gun went off all by itself” phenomenon. At least that was what I was told by my Sig Representative.
I’m a bail agent/fugitive recovery. All I do is hit houses/locations looking for wanted individuals. My hellcat pro is equipped with a TLR7 SUB and a 407k optic paired with night fision optic ready night sights. Works great for me
wish more people made holsters for the tlr9 as it keeps the great switches from the 7 but has 1000 lumens and while not as good as the x300u, its close. A turbo style revision on both tlrs would also be great.
YES. Love my TLR9. But definitely tough to find a holster. Even for a Glock. Damn near impossible for an M&P, and that's my preference. 9 deserves more love for sure.
For light-bearing, I run x300u-b. For non-lightbearing, I run slick. My lightbearing are for hours of limited visibility potentia/ walking the GSD. While the others are for the rest.always have a secondary light for admin, but it makes no sense to me not to have at least a secondary light source,
My rule: The bigger the gun, the bigger the light. PS. The TLR7 does appear to have diffuser over the LED. If you look at it side by side with a TLR1 you can see what I am talking about. I would be very curious how the light would behave without that. As for CCW purposes, the light is there for more than one reason. Yes it provides you with light to see a target, but it also serves as a way of preventing your pistol from being pressed out of battery. Now when you bump up to the compact 4" pistol you need to consider a TLR1 or TLR1 HL as the TLR7 isn't going to jut out enough. Just a little food for thought. Of course there are pros and cons to everything. If you like the handheld only life then more power to you. At the end of the day it's up to the individual to decide why they want to incorporate somwthing into their system.
It’s not a diffuser, it’s part of the TIR collimating array. The thing you see covering the led is actually to redirect stray light from the led back down to the main reflector.
Finally a person with some sense; I’ll never understand seeing dudes with tlr7s on glock 17/19 sized guns. 4” and above gets an x300 or tlr1, or modlite if you swing that way.
The problem is Safariland, we have HK VP9’s, if we want an optic & a level 3 holster, we have to run the TLR7 or XC1. Safariland needs to make molds for duty lights not micro lights.
Hey Aaron, have you seen the Hellfire Pistol Sight Set from Mak Optics? I was looking for irons for my Glock and ran into these on OpticsPlanet. You should review them.
Guess it's a good thing I don't use mine for duty. I do love the fact that it sits flush with the muzzle. What I hate is the buttons. I'd much rather have the tilt switch.
@@rackpull772maybe it's just my hands. My thumb just tends to fall more naturally on the switch. I've rep'd pushing the buttons thousands of times and still have to fish for it a lot.
@@rackpull772they make a TLR9 which uses the same switches as the TLR7 but is a full size 1000lm light. Unsure if there has been a proper vetting/review of that light out there, never really hear much about it.
Honest assessment. I carry a pistol with a TLR-7A. It's an excellent light for it's size, but the lights on my larger non-conceal carry pistols are SureFire X300s. For what it's worth, I have drop tested the TLR-7A on concrete. It passed.
My agency issues the Nighstick copy of the TLR-7 and it is not enough light output. This wouldn’t be such an issue if our holsters weren’t only compatible with TLR-7 footprint lights. Wider weapon lights like the TLR-1 or X300 will not fit. I had to buy a TLR-9 for better output, but it is still nothing compared to an X300.
I want a light that doesn’t stick out past my muzzle. If you run a compact barrel and the light sticks out further that the barrel, what’s the point of having a compact? Know what I mean?
Now I know I’m late to the party watching this video, but this light is incredibly popular for people who concealed carry due to its small footprint in conjunction with holster comparability, we should also consider the fact that not all threats are gonna be up close and personal, I currently run this light on my carry gun, now I’m considering changing that after watching this video!
Some duties require concealment above all. In that role the TLR7 is really the only option. We issue both the X300U and TLR7. The TLR for concealed duty use and the X300U for higher profile OWB uses. Additionally we require/teach that a quality handheld be utilized in conjunction with the TLR7 when running the pistol concealed.
It is sobering in your shadow demos that the center of your light "penumbra" tends to center on the thing in the hand - human nature. But that means that the muzzle is pointed before identifying the threat.
Aaron, I am correct in saying the TLR-7Sub is currently the only light that will fit on the Sig P365 due to its propriety rail design? Thanks much , as I figured you probably know. Cheers!
