The Tokens were pro-civil rights, as shown here. An all-white male doo-wop group from Brooklyn NY performing a cover of a Zulu folk song in the early 1960's just screams "down with racism" to me.
Loved this song as a kid in the 60's. I always played it at the local café we went to on occasion where the juke box things were at the tables. Today I think he was ahead of his time and could have been a star in 80's hair band music!

On occasion when this song gets in my head I feel like I’m in heaven and have it on repeat mode all day as I sing along to it! The original soprano on this recording was Anita Darian, a singer with the NYC Opera who sang the soprano background. She was not a member the Tokens. The "Janet" you referred to was Janet Vogel - she sang with the Skyliners and is, sadly, deceased. Donna Groom replaced her with the Skyliners - not the Tokens. Donna Groom sang with the Tokens for a PBS Special - the Skyliners were also on that show and the Tokens "borrowed" Donna Groom only for that performance of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

The female background vocalist hitting the insane soprano notes is Anita Darian. She passed away in 2015 and had a booming career from about the late 1950s until post 2010. Darian did another song with the Tokens called B'wa Nina.

The D.J. is Don Webster of ABC affiliate WEWS-TV5 in Cleveland, Ohioi. Don was the weatherman for quite a long time. He hosted a local talent called "Shindig". Do not know when this episode was recorded. Sadly, Don passed away.
