Just a little background on the song. The Lion Sleeps Tonight was originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda in South Africa in 1939. It was sung and adapted by many international artists in the 50s and 60s but it was The Tokens who had the number 1 hit in the US in 1961. Beautifully done.

2024 and I', still listening to this song. Brings back memories of the past. Wonderful. I'm 74 now.

I was 6 years old in 1961 when this song became a phenomena by the Tokens. I loved it then, the first time I ever heard it and I still love it to this day, 59 years later, it still resonates inside me.

I was 13 attending my first school dance in 1961. It wasn't the first time I heard the song, but I associate the song with the dance. When ever I hear the song, I am emotionally tranported back to that magical time, at least momentarily. The 1960's, what a fantastic time to be a teenager, never forgotten, never to be repeated!

This was my moms favorite song through out her life. She said it reminded her of my eldest brother getting ready for school and this sing along with Sherri by 4 seasons would play on the radio. My brother was KIA in Vietnam in 1969. RIP Mom I pray you both are reunited.❤

How do you know if a song is great? 1961... "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" hit the airwaves when I was 7, I sang it constantly then and have loved it ever since. Fast forward... 1970, the "garage band" I was in performed it for a High School talent show, and won. Fast forward again... 1985, Berwyn IL. I walked into what would become my favorite little bar in the world and discovered that every night "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was the "Last Call" song. If you sang along with the bartender when they put it on the jukebox, half an hour before closing time, your last drink was free. Fast forward again... 2014, I had the chance to revisit "my favorite little bar in the world" after being away for 22 years and discovered that after TWO ownership changes, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is Still the "Last Call" song. Fast forward one last time, 2019, my Grandson and his new Bride chose "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for their First Dance at their Wedding reception. How do you know if a song is great? THIS, is how you know a song is Great!

Mum had this. At her funeral service it made everyone sing. And sway it was a joy to here it it made everyones day even at a sad time this was 4 weeks ago it still makes us smile when we hear it

One of the things that made this song grab our hearts is that the vocals lagged behind the beat ever so slightly. If you listen you can hear the vocals enforce the beat instead of the other way around. Genius.

I saw the Tokens a few years ago at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, during the 3 night Winter Dance Party. Jay said that his granddaughter took him to her school for show and tell because her classmates didn’t believe that her grandfather sang this. I might be a little fuzzy on the details, but that is how I remembered his story. I bought the CD they were selling and got it autographed.

Ray Steinburg was the lead singer,. He was a world class Roller Skater as well as his sister Marlene. They skated a lot at the roller rink in Livonia called Riverside Area. I know, I also skated there. Great times in a very different world. 🇺🇸

this song was written by solomon linda of south africa. somehow the tokens got a hold of it and recorded it. solomon linda never got a dime in royalties and after he died the family sued for royalties. it took a hell of a long time but the family finally got royalties but mr. linda was long dead by that time.
