Even when Johnny bombs, he's funny!

Wow the silence from the audience at 2:15 - you know when a joke bombs when the studio turns into the silence of the forgotten tomb. Johnny thrived when jokes bombed like this. I miss him so much.

Anytime he brought Freddie or Doc into the mix it got funnier because they’d always goof on each other

If you are a Johnny Carson fan and haven't read Bombastic Bushkin's book, I give it a recommendation.

Yes, great book. It really showed both sides of Johnny’s personality

@@jennifersman7990 Bushkin had an axe to grind though, remember that. Johnny fired him because he felt Bushkin was investing his fortune in awful companies, and creaming off a large chunk of profit for himself. Johnny felt betrayed and fired him. Remember that before reading it.

The stock market joke: the Dow Jones in May, 1983, was just over 1,000.

"Just because it goes into the dumper..." 😅 Johnny dropped clunkers on purpose to give everybody a chance to shine. If Ed or Doc or Tommy or even Fred got on a roll, he didn't stifle them. One thing Carson did not do was hog the limelight (even the guy up the ladder... AWACS!). Show me a show today with depth like that.

I always felt sorry for Fred, the little I’ve read about his life and his wife is tough.

I just read how bad the ending was for Fred, and how his wife ended up.

Vicki Tayback. Its a joke name based on an actor named Vic Tayback who at the time, was on a tv show called Alice.

Carson is actually pretty upset Fred walked onto stage and violated his space, especially when he immediately tells him to go back to his chair.

Look at Johnny, he was smiling when Fred was next to him. Johnny never fell out with Fred until 1991. Until then, both men were very good friends. Fred's actions during the taping of Johnny's return to the show after the death of his son in a car accident was the cause of their friendship ending. But in 1983, Johnny didn't care where Fred walked to.

That was one god-awful monologue. Oh well, strikes and gutters. That's life.

It was nothing as bad as your so-called metaphor. I mean, who's been bowling in the last 30 years? Lol
