I got abl3 just recently, and I have to say it is a really spiffy piece of software all round. Apart from it's excellent design and looks (including the skins, ngl) it just "feels" right the way knobs respond to input. I'm very happy with it.
@@thomaselers7416 honestly of all the synths I've owned the original tb-303 is still my favourite. Can't disagree about the added distortion on the Behringer td-3 though it's the only thing missing from the original. Love it.
Drumazon is my favorite 909 emulation, but D16 really need to update it with a resizable interface. As for software 303's, ABL3 is the winner for me. But then again, it can never beat my Behringer TD-3.
@@njdpdv If you think Roland is high quality then you better think again. I've had a lot of gear in my life from many different brands, and the Roland stuff always broke down the most. I've never had issues with any of my Behringer gear. So go ahead and find yourself a Roland TB-303 and pay a fortune for it.
ABL3 is awesome in my opinion. The Rack Extension version for Reason allows you to flip it around and modulate from other sources. Audiorealism's customer service is top-notch too.
I love you Oscar. I have been searching for this tutorial all morning with a hangover, and should have known to look in the most obvious place. Actually, I had seen you playing with a 303 the other day and was trying to find the tutorial to contact you and ask how this is done in Ableton. Now I can just watch this tutorial. Just this minute found out that I have got a pay rise too so feeling doubly happy. Still got a hangover though. You're a star mate!
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but… the og 303 did not have built in delay! I’m guessing you are referring to the boutique one, but that one can be synced to tempo, too ;)
Nice video with lots useful info and a good overview of what is needed to make some juicy acid. The rack extension ABL3 does the job for me, its fast and good for linking up to other devices via CV.
Oh I love Acid since 1990ies! Some things to say about the topic: 1) There was also substyle acid trance, and my favorite is Future Breeze - Heulender Wolf, - mindblowing tune! 2) Acid genres have a distinctive characteristic - the track must consist of 2 or more acid lines, at least they are acid bass + acid lead (also maybe rhythmic riff and/or harmonic arp). In other cases they are just tracks of other genres with an acidline, but not acid house/techno/trance 3) I use 303-emulation called Transistor Bass - it's a plugin from within FL-Studio, but can be purchased as VST separately. For me, compared to D16 and to original acid, it sounds pretty well
Original acid house nd acid techno always had only one 303. the trend with 2 and more started around 92 because of hardfloor, but even then acid doesnt need 2 303
@@buckstarchaser2376 I'm not making an advertisment of it, if you've meant it. Just this plugin isn't usually mentioned in 303 emulations reviews, as it's stock plugin hard to get for users of others daws. Just saying that the choice of good 303 emulations is a bit wider than it's usually thought 😀

I think acid was more performative in the day. This however gets into what makes acid acid controversy. The whole idea was to hit those knobs with both hands, one on the 909 other 303 or 2x303 or 101/202. The human element was half the spirit in making a track/performance memorable. If one agrees with this philosophy, either one must make sure you can midi cc everything with all the knobs available on a controller or use an automation lane, or move to hardware. Well, the automation lane does remove the human performative element so not sure I can say it’s acid if one uses that 😜. I am just suggesting that half the fun of making acid is working the machine/s and happy accidents were the thrill, much like the random button in the software, your just more connected to result flowing from within
This is probably said before, but....I just realised (after seeing them in numerous videos) your cute tree patterns are actually drum/waveform patterns. Nice :)
For those using FL studio, then transistor bass is an awesome instrument. Great video Oscar as always. Would love to see you do some FL studio sessions sometime!
Not sure if it's been shared already, but there's a free max 4 life device called aicd (not acid, but aicd) that randomly generates 303-like patterns. If you put in a scaler device after it, you can stay in key with the track. :)
great video, i can tell you know how to teach things. very helpful as well since i'm looking to get some acid gear, not sure yet if i'm going for hardware or software yet. as to the spotify list, i would have added 2 tracks: "microwave: microwaving" and "solar quest: acid air raid" which remains an absolute acid music classic to this day.
I am a huge 303 fan and your analysis is very spot on, there are few more 303 software clones out there but you hit the main ones here. I completely agree on Roland Cloud and they should be ashamed of that abomination. I use the D16 stuff because I am on Winblows and I really like the sound but D16 has not updated these plugins in a long time and from what I have read there are no plans for that to happen, I would love to be able to resize the plugin interface on these. The Audiorealism 303 looks very nice and I may give that a look but since I mainly use the piano roll for this and the built in arp/sound of D16 hits all the right places. I have a TD-3 and TD-3 MO on order but I still prefer to use the D16 stuff just for the ease of use and great sound.
Hey Oscar, i am a big fan of you and the videos you do here on YT, but i have a little request :-) In the future can you please add version number + date for test on the VST's you review/ compare and use, in the video description ? On that way it will for example be much easier to see if the bugs got fixed that you mention or if the versions still are the same as when you made the review. Thank you in advancde and keep up the good work makeing these videos for us
Another great video! Wish this had been available before I wasted my time with D16 plugins on a mac (btw the issue is with recent versions of macOS, and I wish they'd bother to update all their Roland emulations because they all produce great sounds). Love ABL3, but as you noted it's far easier to work with the internal sequencer rather than feed in midi.
Cool vid. My 303 doesnt have any delay, but I do often use an unsynced delay pedal to get that "acid" vibe. There are many ways to go acid. Personally, I went Xoxbox and Roland TR8. I recently added a Behringer TB3 and RD6. They do not sound exactly like the originals - but they are very close and definately complimentary. If anything, the Behringer 303 can get a bit more extreme (in a very pleasing way) than the xoxbox I own. Acieeed😊
I wish that Ableton would use real terms that are universal to sounddesign. This way 'Tune' becomes 'Fine Pitch', and 'Snappy' becomes 'Decay' or 'Release' depending on how many stages the volume envelope has. I hope this explanation helps because it can be very confusing otherwise.
Great comparison. And a great shout about Roland Cloud. I too had the dreaded not authorised BS. I contacted RC and they said update the RCM and you should be fine. Totally agree it's a workflow killer. Also I noticed, with RC you can't have more than two of their VST open simutaneously. WTF! I pay for a year's sub and they dictate what I can use at any time. Not sure I'll continue with them when ABL and D16 have brilliant emulations. I love ABL3 and Drumazon.

D 16 is a great VST though , it is like the “ Devil fish “ version of The TB303 😎❤️
Thanks Oscar, as a Roland Cloud user I feel your pain and could not imagine it with clients. Things seem to be getting a little better, but they have a way to go with their authorization experience. As for the preset mess, they must have brought the code along with the sounds from the 80s. On the upside (and you probably already know this) one thing that is nice with those drum machines is the ability to drag individual drum pattern data to tracks. When dragging midi/audio from the plugin to a track, you can filter what drum's patterns you want using the mute/solo buttons. That combined with their sub outs make it really easy to isolate drums or leverage their patterns in other drum machines. Thanks for your quality content.
I don't think D16 have updated any of their plugins in quite some time for any reason, let alone for Apple M1 compatibility. I reported a bug in Phoscyon about a year ago, they said at the time they knew about it but also that they didn't know when it would be fixed. I suspect they are struggling as a company, sadly.. I like their products but they all need modernisation - especially the ability to scale the GUI''s - their fonts are far too small to work with on newer displays. The Roland cloud VST's are all pretty poor, IMHO. Great video by the way!
Couldn’t agree more. D16 stuff it dated at this point. It’s a shame. I’d love to use Punch Box more, but I’m over having to zoom my computer to see anything. Roland’s Cloud stuff was incredibly disappointing. Horrible, clunky interface.
I was looking for that acid sound, and ended up buying Roland TB3 (Aira re-issue). Awesome little box, and Roland did great job in terms of UI for sequencing, especially when jamming live on stage. It's a shame that they didn't provide OOTB synth access (its like preset box by default), but using couple max for live devices I can access internal synth, which can do much more than regular 303.
Half the fun is the crazy sequencer on the TB303! Well, based on using the Behringer clone that I assume has sequencer similar to the original. It's tricky to predict how the riff will come out, it's sort of "half-random" and often, really cool sequences just pop out by accident.

I have a TB-03 (on the shelf behind in the video). Best sounding 303 clone i've heard IMHO and there have been a LOT of bad attempts over the years. Nice video!
A quick tip, the 303 uses the same slide time no matter what note you come from and go to. I liked your ableton synth the best, even though it's not completely "303"
fantastic video! I ran into the same issue with the roland plugins on windows, not being able to open any of the preset or pattern boxes... turns out you have to have your system display "scale" set to 100%. hope this helps anyone else who's been having the same issue! Cheers
To load a preset on the roland 303, it's a glitch you've got to move a little bit on the top left. I've tried every 303 vst clone, and it's the best, great for acid techno. It's pretty easy to have good acid sound, but don't use the built in distortion, I use D16 devastator + a little bit of valhalla shimmer and it's magic
It's the year 2021 and these are their most iconic software emulations of their most iconic synths. Why are there glitches on the first level of their UI? 😂 Have they ever tried using their own plugins?
Thanks for confirming my right choice in plugins... I often thought about subscribing to the Roland cloud but the high price that you have to pay for so many plugins that you do not use in the end if you mainly want to have the 303 and 909 made me back off. I am glad to find out it was the right choice.
Audio realism activate plugins with a simple serial number. This kind of TRUST in the user gets my vote and my money. Same goes for U-He and TAL. The problems Oscar describes with the Roland Cloud software are completely unsurprising to me, and personally I refuse to buy into subscription software for this reason.
Generally speaking all other genres are actually sub genres, since the dance scene as we know now pretty much started with Acid house, & maybe Disco & Italo before that. But techno, hiphouse, trance, eurodance, progressive, hardcore etc evolved after that.
I would assume this has been said a thousand times in the comments already but just to reassure: you can go trough the presets on the roland plugins using your keyboard's arrow keys. I am not sure why it doesn't just work with mouse but keyboard arrows always work : )
