I remember my mom had a simple routine for my sis and I along with protective style and our hair was to our butt. When we reached high school of course my sis and I explored different styles and our hair became damaged and shorter about shoulder length . In my 20s I went back to a simple old school routine and BAM length again! Keeping simple really is key. I wear mini twists and on occasion my hair is out. My hair is waist length.
If my hair gets any longer I may not be able to handle it because I am bra length now and it's a struggle now for me I finger detangle it's not always the best for me because if my get wet it untangled if my hair gets really bad where I can't pull the come thu I wet my whole head in order to comb it
My end don't break I never clip my ends and my hair grows like crazy I have always had long hair my mom say go get your hair things I get my cup with warm water a brush and comb she say get your towel because water melts my nappy hair lol but it true
I said the Same thing, having a simple routine even with protective styles my hair grew, now it’s growing slow, so back to basics no longer a product junkie.
Once I truly understood and accepted that I was a black woman w/type 4 hair and DID NOT have to look like a woman w/type 3 hair, that was it! You wouldn’t see me buying jams/gel/hair glue or anything that slicked down my texture NO MORE😂 I’ve been natural since I graduated high school in 2016 but my hair didn’t start growing until a little over 1.5 years ago bc I accepted my hair😅 *I don’t even wear weave anymore* My hair went from ear length to shoulder to armpit length, my next goal is bra strap😂😎 I wash my hair every month, moisturize weekly w/cheap leave in, Palmer’s olive oil grease, and a light coat of avocado oil. And my go to style are chunky twists (more like my only style nowadays)😂
lol me too, but I believe we try different ones until we find what works best for our hair thus making us product junkies by default. I think I’m narrowing it down with “get this” making my own hair products.
I learned when you stick to just a few products consistently, you train your hair and scalp to receive and respond to it. Sincerely yours, ex bald headed girl❤
OG here. I used to keep my hair in mini twists. I used to wash my hair with the mini twists in. And then do the same as you, take them out individually and comb them out on a rotation basis. What I found is that, even though I was combing them out (using a comb), I started to experience matting. I have very fine hair that matts easily and fast. Rotating taking them out was providing some of the twists the chance to start to form dred locks. Also, the shed hairs were not being combed out fast enough. We shed 100 hairs a day. Even if you shed 1/2 that amount, that 350 hairs a week. My strategy now is to wear large twists and comb them out at least twice a week. I now have many less tangles and I am retaining length.
I can’t imagine combing my hair that often. the time is scanty😬. I totally understand about matting and locking though. when I feel like my hair is matting, I just redo the twists from scratch rather than recycling the same twists
Yes this ultra fine hair likes to lock up and then break off when you try to detangle. Chunky twists are the best for these fine medium density strands.
Prrotective styling (with hair added) doesnt equal dry hair. A spray bottle with water or rose water, glycerin and a nice penetrative oil and you can get to your hair and scalp. My hair grows wildly when I braid or crochet braid, with a consistent 2-3x a week moisturizing routine. Then again I do my own hair and I control the tightness (or lack thereof) and I moisturize every other day or so. Coily hair loves glycerin + water.
If you can effectively moisturise while in synthetic hair then great. many naturals can’t keep up with the moisture routine required to keep moisturised hair while in synthetic extensions and in my experience they can really dry your hair out especially if product is not getting through the extensions into the hair.
I tried that, and I braided my hair myself for years, but my strands are soooooo fine that the synthetic hair just shreds my hair no matter what I do. I finally got past my hair plateau once I started just doing twists and braids with no added hair which was about a year ago.
These tips are right on point. ❤ I wash my hair once a month. I'm almost waist length, so washing weekly/bi-weekly is a no-no for me. My hair lives in a protective style. Mini Twists are my go-to protective style.
@@AntiHAESIt does take a lot of patience 😫. I have to make sure I'm either watching a movie or catching up on a series this way I don't get frustrated easily.
I would add, that all of these ladies with long hair, LOVE their hair, and speak life and health over it. Hair is like a plant in that respect! 😊 Also, have you ever watched anything from 22ndCenturyNaturalWoman ? She's one of the OG natural hair youtubers and went from big chop to tailbone length employing some of the methods you've observed. Her channel is a fascinating deep dive if you have the time.
"Hair is like a plant" that's true in so many ways! I've realised this and it's changed how I treat my hair in more ways than one. Also, like plants hair loves water (not overwatering of course), sunlight and air.
I was hoping you'd say NaturalAcademia and you did!! She is amazing. I adopted all of her methods on taking care of hair. The biggest one being finger detangling. Now i can't imagine ever using combs or brushes on my coils. And I follow every one of those tips you listed. It's spot on. 👌
I agree with these tips! I’m on a length retention journey as well. And my routine is very simple. I co wash mid week every 3 weeks after wash day. And I detangle my hair doing the smoothing method in between wash days to remove shedded hair. This is something I used to used to do in the start of my natural hair journey and for some reason I stopped, and waiting entirely on pre poo day to thoroughly detangle has not benefitted me, so I’m going back to my old routine that made my regimen easier and less time consuming. Definitely leaving hair alone is a must, but in my case if I don’t get the shedded hair out after 2 to 3 weeks after wash day, my hair will be a tangled mess as I experienced recently. Thanks for sharing this!😊
Girl thanks to you I ran out and bought some glycerin yesterday. Will be trimming my ends, washing my hair, and getting started with it today. Thank you!
Great analysis and compilation of the best hair care tips for 4C hair! I was washing weekly to every 10 days in the past. It did work for me at one point when my hair was at a certain length. But now I realize I need to wash my hair less often as I am trying to grow it back. I'm looking to wash every 3-4 weeks now. At the soonest, 2 weeks. And I think I also need to be sure to use a mild shampoo and shampoo just once for the most part. So excited for this hair journey!
Recently I decided to only wash my hair with a moisturizing shampoo only once per month. Not sure if my hair could go any longer yet 😂 But I also started co-washing my hair in between washes. My hair is no longer super dry the way it used to be. I now love looking at my hair ❤❤ I use a leave-in conditioner and seal with my DIY oil.😊 Also, I oil my scalp with my same DIY oil. I'm already seeing growth and my hair looks and feels so much better. I am growing my hair to my hair goal in a very short time and will continue to grow. I hope that everyone here reaches their hair goals fast also. Hey! We should have an incentive contest starting now and into 2024 and beyond.❤❤❤
@@CoilyDiaries Where each of us says what our goal is, by a certain amount of time and then post the results by the deadline. Maybe even post one pic for the start and then one for the end (no hair is too short or too long to participate).
Spot on video. I was washing my 43 hair weekly. I was deep conditioning each time I washed, so I didn't see a problem. Bt the reason I was having to wash so frequently is because I wasn't adding enough oils to my hair throughout the week. Now I use jojoba oil daily. It's the closest thing to our natural sebum. I love the results.
I fell down the product junkie rabbit hole.... Then I looked up what am I older videos and notice how long my hair was compared to now... And decide to go back to the way I was doing my hair then it was a shampoo or conditioner and oil that I put through my braids and on occasion ...a moisturizer. And my hair was always, always, always up. So soon as I get my length back I will be why my hair down but for now up, up, up!
You're spot on about the not washing too frequently. Personally, I don't have any trouble leaving my hair and scalp alone for a month or 2. Shampoos are just too drying on my hair. My scalp and hair prefer the build up and no conditioner, moisturizer, or style could replace it. And you're not alone about the oils already in the hair being the best moisturizer, it is for me at least. I bag my hair before working out, and once I take it off, my hair is so moisturized. This is without adding anything. Just steam and whatever is already in my hair do the trick. I don't think I would've developed my scalp psoriasis if I hadn't washed my scalp once a week. I had no need to do it to begin with but I naively believed that my hair would be dirty if I didn't wash it once a week. I'm glad I tried it, but it only taught me that if what you're doing isn't broken, don't fix it; and only listen to people's advice if their hair has similar needs as your own.
It’s funny how I’ve been doing all these things ever since I did my big chop over a year ago. I went from no hair to Bob length and my hair is so healthy, my routine is shorter and simple and I feel so much more in love with my hair. I tried two strand twists for a nice temporary style and it was fun tho I mostly just wear my hair in a wash n go and my hair is thriving!
Hi I’m a new subscriber. Joined 2 weeks ago. How I came across your channel was a miracle but Gurl we are here to stay! This is my second video which I’m enjoying right now but the video I watched about hydrating hair with glycerine was fire 🔥 The next wash day and I went for it I order the glycerine from uncle A and it came the next day ❗️ After conditioning I made the potion and stretched my hair with my hands and twisted my hair with it. WOW❗️first I had hardly any knots during wash and conditioning that I was amazed at the moisture, softness and shine. I left it for 2 days before coming it and wow. I mean for me this is huge👌🏾 I’ve gone from hating touching my hair because of pain, detangling and dryness to forging a new relationship with it. Guys watch that video again.!! Now I just sprinkle my hair once a while but keep it wrapped up in my silk scarf Thanku for the tips and much love to sweet baby. I know how joyful but tiring it can b💗💗💗
Hello, I'm so agree with all the tips you gave in your video! I do a lot of them. My routine is very simple (now more than before😅). I just finger detangle my hair when i do my protective style (I love braids, no addict). Simple could be the word. Thank you very much for your video, your voice sounds peacfull and i can feel the love you have. BIG LOVE FROM FRANCE💖, merci beaucoup
Great video and Well presented info. My length is bra-strap and in late-Spring and Summer, I’m all about the WnG water washing every 2 days and I “leave it alone’. Full wash day at 7 days. In Winter, my strands hibernate in twists under head wraps and I do a full wash day every 2 wks. The habits for women with long hair that you identify are dead on. I have found that the longer my hair has gotten, the more product I need to use just to cover my strands and the less likely I am to mess with it unless I absolutely have to! 🤣
My Dear ❤, without question, you remind me of Thandiwe Newton and my best friends. You have such a comfortable presentation and presence. Thank you 💕 again
I sadly cant use any oils my hair simply dislkes oils. Its butter for me and water. I wash my hair with clay once a week and deep conditioner every two weeks with Amla mixed with Aloe vera juice honey and Shea Moisture Deep Conditioner mask. This was a massive game changer for me. I no longer do protective styles after years of weave wigs braids my hair has had enough. My hair use to grow then broke now its flourishing its been the longest its ever been bra strap length.❤ Ps yes finger detangling game changer too. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous ❤
I cannot wet my hair when its in twists. It just becomes locked up! But let me tell you, crochet braids have been a life saver. Better than braids for me. My hair starnds break down the shaft with braids. Ive just made it past bra strap in the back but my front is still at shoulders
I like this girl-honestly one of the most realest and consistent one’s out THERE with her counsels- thanks for cooking sis! But I do have to say about “human hair” ladies just remember human hair means adding on someone else’s hair and energy unto you….Im just saying 🌻
❤❤love the video! I'm jus loving it!! Keep the hands out of the hair!.. this sounds like a vacation for me! And believe me, I'll be starting this NOW! This video has actually given me 3 benefits .... great savings money wise, time saver as well & I can concentrate more on my length & strength!! 👏👏 Thank u
When my hair is washed I use scurl no drip curl activator moisturizer. Then I put my hair in cornrows. This has grown my hair out. I also use curl enhancer smoothie by Shea moisture. I use the acv detox with the Aztec clay. Talking about shiney and it grows. Check it out
Shea Moisture 4c lady here as well. I dont wash my hair but once a month or less. Hair is 17 inches.. both.daughters hair is 20inches. I rarely comb our hair. protective two strand jumbo twist styles and satin.
My hair is waist length...I only use water, wax and protective styles. I am trying to hit butt length. You don't next super expensive products. Hair will grow, it grows like nails...
You are right I remember when young I washed my hair once every two weeks my mom straightened my hair and it stayed that way until washed day and my hair was long and I didn’t use conditioner lol couldn’t afford it so long hair natural doing it right I need to go back to old school ways and see if my hair will start growing better then it does now. Granted I am 57 that plays a part maybe lol
My new fav! You are beautiful with a beautiful soul 🫶🏽 Thank You for The wonderful advice. One thing I’d add is prepooing/detangling with Ambuno (which has cleansing components) has seriously changed the game and shortened my wash day. It helps the strands glide. I See that you also have this in your Amazon storefront. ❤. My hair and scalp absolutely love ambuno.
Great info thank you. I have extremely fine strands and have not found a protective style that will last besides a bun. I moisturize and put in a bun without a hair tie of any kind I tuck my ends and use a twist hairpin to secure. I use rose water, aloe Vera or plain water an oil and leave in conditioner. I need help. I am being patient and gentle.
Do you mean like twists and braids won’t last either? how long do you want the style to last? check out @finenaturalhairrocks for more specialised info! also kindly share with us the type of twist hair pin you use!
I appreciate your viewpoints in regard to embracing what God created. I also love the versatility that comes with Afro hair of all levels (3a,b,c, 4a,b,c). Not sure who created the number and letter system for our hair instead of just using the definition of each head of hair like other ethnic groups, but ok. lol. My hair is fine, wavy, kinky, and coily. High porous. It will drink in a product, and over night pour it out/evaporated ... gone! lol I love wearing my hair natural in summer months. It's pretty, and it allows me to be able to sweat, swim, play sports, and all the other outdoor activities that I love without any concern whatsoever. It goes into one or two buns, pom poms, or curly pony tails. Done. In the cooler months, I prefer it to be a bit straighter, but with minimal manipulation. So I Wow Dream Coat, RevAir and TYMO my hair every two weeks or so, and just style it in a messy bun, loose with a bang and head band, hair clip, etc. Closing out each day with bee wax and black jamaican castor oil, silk scrunchies, and wrapped in a silk scarf assures another day of easily maintained, low to no manipulation in the morning. I have to say though, I enjoy enjoying my hair, so keeping it in protective styles and not touching it is not an option for me. Why have it if I cannot enjoy it. lol. I appreciate your chanel, afro sis. God bless you!
love your routine and versatility with your hair! it’s true enjoying natural hair should be a given but it’s important to note that this means different and looks different for different individuals. that being said awesome hair care 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽
I can’t do the oils and potions all in my head bc my scalp is on fire and my hair doesn’t like to not be be blow dried. It’s too much to try to keep from tangling and matting at the roots so it will be blow dried after washing.
I find my hair tangles if I don't dry it with a 'blowdryer,' though in my case a Revair which is low heat and more suction than blowing. That's great for my not getting breakage from the hair tangling on itself or knotting, but then there's a battle to keep it moisturized because moisture causes it to revert. A blowout is generally what seems like the gentlest handling for my hair, but I have to wash every 2 weeks or it gets too dry. Thanks for the things to think about if I want more length. Question: don't you find your hair wants to go to dread locks if you're always leaving it twisted and even washing it twisted? I had DLs for many years and all I did was that to maintain the locs. But you can come it out when you decide to and actually get a comb through it?
Blow drying is not sustainable for me for now due to the amount of glycerin I use which just causes my hair to revert very fast! I have just recorded a video on how to avoid locing. I think you will find it helpful 🥰 look out for it soon
💗💓💕💖 Yes please, i want that video. Could you let us know any drawbacks of doing so and how to counteract them. I tried washing my hair in my twists, but i felt that the conditioner didn't rinse out completely, which means that probably the shampoo didn't either. My twists ate never mini, they're usually medium twists, so about 12 to the back, 3 or 2 on the sides, 6 in the front, so max 25 twists on my head. I won't go smaller than that cuz it'll take too long to install. I also dilute the shampoo and conditioner in a dispenser bottle, yet it doesn't completely wash out of my rope twisted hair. Also, fluff at the roots are left behind, as well as any seborrheic dermatitis flakes (i have 2 spots at the back of my head that I'm trying to get rid of, the same spots that always used to burn when i used to relax 3.5 years ago. ) I also found that once water got on my twists after they've been in for 2 weeks, they will matt as though they want to loc, then detangling after causes definite breakage. If you have found measures to mitigate these issues and still save time- I NEED to hear it! 🙏😅
I have a video lined up for preventing the locking. If you have flakes and other particles on your routs what might work for you is to a twist to rinse and retwist afterwards. I know it’s more work but tricky to remove such with twists on. More tips coming!
@@CoilyDiaries Yes, sadly, that's what I have to do- untwist to rinse out the shampoo thoroughly, then retwist. It takes up time, but alas, it needs to be done to prevent shrinkage. 🤷♀️
I did come up with a time saving solution that I've yet to try in the upcoming wash days... I've decided I'm going to use a deep conditioner that can double as a leave in, so that after I rinse the shampoo, I could get out of the shower, slather the conditioner in the twists, baggie it up, give it heat, then detangle and twist over. No need to go back and rinse out anything! That should save me about 30 minutes I think. 😉😁
The last tip is so me and I always feel it’s the major reason my hair don’t grow well 😢mine is worse because I use my hand to pull out my hair strands and I see them falling out and even see some parts of my hair barred 😞I will try my best to stop that bad habit of mine. Thanks for the tips though ❤
@@CoilyDiaries thanks for the reply🙏pls I would really appreciate it if you can recommend me any hair tutorial video of yours that I can follow because I just started my natural hair growth journey and my hair is still at a very small length. I mean the do and don’t to promote my hair growth🙏
13:12- I will check out that video next! My only reserve is my scalp. I’m guessing your scalp doesn’t give you issues so your washing/moisture routine fits and works for you. I find that my hair retains moisture fairly well but I find that I need to wash more frequently than I would like to because of my scalp. Once a week is fine for me but when I have in styles like mini twists etc, my scalp doesn’t hold out for long so I end up pushing out wash day to preserve the style and while my strands remain moisturized, my scalp suffers 😭. Ofc this isn’t good and I need to do some adjusting but it’s tough lol.
@@CoilyDiaries oo exciting! Manual removal of sebum will help me a lot. I produce it quickly. Interested to know how you use the essential oils as well 😊
I agree and disagree my hair is to my butt i wash once a month if that. I dont finger detangle i use the Wet brush. My wash day is hectic its the only time ill pull out all the stops for treatments proteins, deep conditions, oils, etc. Im a straight natural because my curly natural hair will be rittled with fairy knots immediately. Plus when its straightened i can keep it well moisturized and detangled with little to no additional manipulation for the month. Summer time ill do 2 strand twists and wash/treatments more often. I cut my hair maybe twice a year. And i literally have a small beauty supply store in my house although i only ever use a few products as i got trough it.
Thanks for this video. My challenge is keeping my grey hair clean. I live in a tropical country and exercise and sweat 6 days a week. It’s difficult for me to go more than 2 weeks maximum without washing my hair….. any advice?
I just encourage people to do what works for your hair. two weeks is not bad at all! have you seen my video on how I maintain my scalp for a month? scalp brushing essential oils etc?
My problem is not having enough slip in De - Tanglers Conditioners...What can I use with alot of slip to De - Tangle my hair after washing it ??? Thanks for sharing...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
aloe, okra, Ambunu all offer great slip. Another idea is to add olive oil to on top of your conditioner. adding water will also help everything become more slippery
I used to get my hair done in a crochet style but I haven't had my hair done in awhile. My hair broke off and came out in spots because my braids where too tight. What do you recommend I use to grow my hair quickly and thicker? I use hair growth oil on my scalp and blue magic coconut grease on my hair. I started using this grease ovee a week ago before that i used Sulfer 8 grease.
Hair does not grow 'quickly'. Be patient with your hair and keep it moisturized. Let go of the idea that you need tight styles because that will cause inflammation on your scalp and may also rip hair straight out your scalp. I do my own crochet braids which is my go-to protective style and I dont corn row my hair super tight. It literally makes no sense cause no one's seeing the corn rows😂Try flat twisting instead, and remember to keep your hair under the style moisturized. Water and glycerin. Maybe an oil of your choice.
For the spots that broke off, get some vitamin E capsules and pop them to get the oil out. Use the Vit E oil on your spots, gently massaging the oil in. Do this twice a week.
Being healthy is key to make sure your hair gets all the nutrients it needs. Thyme, biotin, pumpkin seed oil are great to help give your hair a great chance at being healthy but it’s great to ensure the hair is already healthy as it comes out. Having a healthy hair routine and sticking with it is also key!
Glycerin was a game changer for me then i ran out and started paying attention to the natural hair wave when I was already natural with a regimen I regret it so much now
You absolutely can. Two cations: I’d recommend a headband wig to protect your edges and ensure your Cornrows are not tight. Keep the hair clean and moisturized underneath and you will be good 😊!
I agree with this tips but for me I wash my hair every week or every other week and sometimes I do the mini twist or mini braid or braid or twist out also ponytails or buns. I am trying to leave my hair alone. I don't like doing the finger detangling but I don't like the feeling of hair. I do the washing every week or two weeks because I don't like how dry my hair feels. But for the most part I am lazy when it comes to my hair.
