Hey another piece of advice, you can get a tiny pair of vice grips (harbor freight has a small pair under the name Bremen, these punch way above their weight and are as nice quality as the real vice grips, much nicer than other budget clamping pliers, right now the Braun is on sale for only $6) to use as pot clamps… incredibly convenient being able to adjust them to clamp to a pot wall of any thickness and then you can leave it on there without having to grab the pot with it every time you need to move the pot. Cheers!

Great video! I need to add the mini spatula to my kit. Also just a heads up to anyone looking for a folding mini kitchen knife, I can not reccomend the Tacray folding chefs knife on amazon for about $40 enough. Unlike most folding knives its got a very thin grind so it will slice well and is actually made from a quality steel (in this case VG10) instead of the cheap stuff like 440c

Thank god there’s at least one person in the backpacking community that makes sure to bring a knife… of course he’s a chef 😂 In all seriousness I am absolutely tired of seeing people on Reddit tell others not to bring a knife with them while backpacking and staring it is unnecessary. VWAT???? Are they high?

Love the video Chef. I too have added the folding knives into my cook kit. I personally use the Senbon meat and Senbon bread knife. Super sharp. I also have in my kit a folding clever by Kitory. That thing is insanely sharp and love that thing. I use it for most of my food prep. I just thought I would concur with the folding knives and share the ones I use. I highly recommend the Kitory folding clever. It is awesome.

Wow, $80 USD for that A.G. Russell knife and $52 for the other one; as for the lighter, you have to buy two (see Amazon link); Titanium spork $22. You're definitely be styling buying and the envy of other backpackers/hikers if you buy all this stuff.

we all have choices for what equipment we want to bring. Sometimes a few extra dollars can be helpful for longer lasting quality or supporting a smaller producer.

I don't do carbs so most of your recipes aren't for me but I love that you're telling ppl to move AWAY from packaged meals! 👍👍👍 Totally doable to have nutritious meals on the road/trail by using dehydrated veggies and jerky (just watch those additives) Oh, and I'm glad you mentioned a spatula - I RELY on my spatula

Thanks for the butane lighter link. I know it sounds strange but have never been able to work a lighter (on the some strange things I can't do list includes blowing up balloons :D ). I don't backpack, but it would work well for car camping or perhaps day hikes.

Hey Chef, great video! For keeping your knife sharp, and honed, do you like to sharpen it at camp? (if you do what is the stone(s) that you use.) Or do you just use a triple stone at your home like any good chef. I love my folding cleaver ( I have the Damascus blade Civivi ) and the idea of sharpening it at camp sounds tranquil. I just don't want to pack in my Tristone for it. Your thoughts?

I use regular cosmetic containers from the pharmacy. I have found a rectangular shaped one that has a net pocket in the lid - I put the peeler, can opener (French Nogent), jar opener, etc… when car camping with family. I would see what size Nalgene bottles you carry oils in and then get a container to hold them vertically. GSI has small spice containers for backpacking. I just use small stainless steel containers off of amazon for car camps. Refillable stores carry screw on round aluminum containers - good for jams, etc…

I haven't used a Trangia but check out these ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BIqozVK2L14.html. Alcohol stoves are ok for certain trips but I would rather have a more consistent heat source.

I agree about certain trips and find soup is one of the best things to cook on my Trangia. I especially like how quiet it is and how easy to find fuel. The simmer and safety features you address are super helpful. Thanks for your response, it is much appreciated
