Cheers for this, I have been researching "how to learn piano chords fast" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (search on google )? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro without the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my neighbour got cool success

I'm currently teaching someone who is 72 and she's doing brilliantly. Every week she's anxious to learn a new piece of music (within a 1hr lesson) and comes back the following week to show me she's almost mastered it. You're never to old to learn about music (or anything, for that matter!). They just need to be ready and willing...then they're able! So, that person with their ridiculous comment (e.t.) also needs to try to learn something 'new', too. They'd have a much better attitude and perhaps, they could encourage others...instead of saying something seriously stupid! Thanks for your wonderfully encouraging vids. I'm sure they help many!!!

Just want to add that it is super helpful to start these exercises to metronome SLOWLY, maybe 60bpm or so, and slowly work your way up in increments of 5-10 bpm. Playing slowly PERFECTLY is the key to playing quickly well. Your progress, counterintuitively, will be much faster.

This is one of the best videos I've seen on this subject. I picked up a 4 octave MIDI keyboard a couple of days ago and have been having an absolute blast with it. I'm not interested in just learning how to play a handful of songs, I picked this up specifically to help me more easily learn music theory and have an easier time producing music in a DAW. I figure if I can play around with an actual keyboard, I can more easily visualize notes and chords since I can just play whatever I want on it. When I first got the keyboard, I actually ended up doing all of these exercises by just playing around with it for hours. The scale exercises in particular, just going up and down, then trying it with the other hand, and then getting used to disconnecting that "I moved my left thumb, so I need to move my right thumb too" instinct. I started trying to play a few opening phrases to some songs, and some of them I even managed to recreate the second parts of entirely by ear from what I remember about the tune, so that's pretty neat. I found the easier chord progressions got pretty boring after awhile, so I started to experiment a little bit with it and decided to try playing those same phrases above but with both hands in different octaves. It helped break up the monotony of it and made it far more enjoyable when the usual notes just got too bland to hear anymore. Something I often find myself struggling with is specifically related to arpeggios. My fingers have a tendency to eventually drift into playing the wrong pattern. For example, playing C E G. You go C, E G, E, C, E, G, E, C etc. What I almost always end up doing is starting with that pattern, then before I know it I'm just playing C E G C E G C E G. I'm having a TON of trouble breaking out of that pattern, for some reason my brain always defaults to that. My fingers on both hands are coordinated perfectly, but for whatever reason the pattern suddenly changes and it really feels like I have no control over that. Sometimes I catch it but it completely breaks the rhythm, and then it's like my brain is making dial up sounds while I compute what note comes next and what fingers need to hit it. It doesn't seem to matter how much I play the correct pattern or how quickly I do it either. I just tried all sorts of different arpeggios for about two hours, in addition to all the ones I've tried over the last couple of days, and I always end up going into repeating the first three notes one after the other, instead of playing it the way it's meant to be played. I know I'll eventually break out of that, but if you happen to read this comment, I was wondering if you had any suggestions on what I could try doing to break out of it a bit easier?

Josef I have to tell you I just turned 75 recently and I don't know much about piano but I'm really having fun with your easy lessons. I just started this evening and after about an hour I'm really catching on and learning quickly. I just wanted to tell you THANK YOU for your time and energy spent teaching NEWBEES like me. I'll try to stick with it I'm pretty sure because you make it interesting, fun, and easy for beginners. It's never too late. THANKS again :)

I've been diddling with keyboards for years but I find it a stretch to call myself a "player". I've gotten fluent with these lessons by natural progression but I am starting here so I don't skip steps like I did as a guitarist! Thanks for making this help available to poor souls who can't afford to pay for lessons!

I was trying to learn this without having a Music Teacher since i live in an Area were there's not much people knows how to play instruments (except Guitar and Drums, but thats all and I'm not interested to neither of those) so that really helps me a lot, and I'm already 15 years old so that'll be awkward to me hahahaha

I just stumbled onto your site (as a beginning player looking at way too many "how to" piano videos) and found your lesson to be very good and well-explained. I need to look into your lessons more. I need a plan I can follow lesson-by-lesson before my head explodes from TMI (too much information).
@Creativepianoacademy

I hear you. Too much info and too much to do makes you not do anything at all. I'm developing premium courses right now (first one going deep into hand coordination) which does give me this flexibility to have specific goals with step by step methods to get there. Most of my lessons on youtube though do have little mini curriculums you can follow. I try to layer them up in ability levels within the video so make sure you mine everything you can from them and try to remain focused on 1 or 2 vids max that take your fancy. Other than this, I've organised my vids into playlists on specific topics. For instance this playlist - ru-vid.com/group/PLhmvEMFe19DsCFuu9lW4gDDIad3gAeZR7 has vids suitable for beginners. I have a few more depending on what you fance.

Wow first day! Glad you liked the video. What drove you to want to play piano?
@carstenhansen5757
@carstenhansen5757 6 лет назад
Well, I always liked the piano as an instrument. When played right, it sounds like an entire orchestra. Why did you chose it? I was wondering. Would you consider sorting your tutorial video's? For instance part 1/3 - 2/3 - 3/3, and maybe even indicate which one to start with, so a complete rookie, would start with video 1/1/1, which would be the very first video of all you tutorial video's. Next is called 2/1/3, (let's say it's a three part video), next is 3/2/3 next is 3/3/3, next is is 4/1/1 (in case it's just one video) next is 5/1/2, (two vids) and 6/2/2, 7/X/X etc.. I don't know if you play list is sorted in order of difficulty or if it's just random? There is so much material out there, which is good, but as a noob I'd like to start a bit more structured and concentrate on one maybe two teachers. I'm sure there are lots of opinions as to which you, as a new piano player should learn first, but I'm sure you have an idea too? So far I really like what you've uploaded, and I'd like to continue with your video's, but it's kinda hard to get an idea as what to see first, since I don't know if your playlist is any particular order, so I often end up looking at other peoples videos, who may have a completely different approach than you (which is not a bad thing, but in the beginning I'd like it to be more structured), in a random order, maybe learning something, or maybe "wasting" time, on something that's too easy or too difficult. Oh, and I really like the way you divided "The top 5 piano exercises for beginners", up in sections, so that you know when to pause and practice. Thanks for getting back to us. :)
@Creativepianoacademy
@Creativepianoacademy 6 лет назад
Hi Carsten. My youtube videos are generally beginner to intermediate level. As far as organisation, I have created playlists for certain areas, styles and difficulty levels. If you look at my playlist - ru-vid.com/group/PLhmvEMFe19DsCFuu9lW4gDDIad3gAeZR7 all the videos in here are suitable for beginners. I get that there are literally hundreds of videos out there and it can get confusing so I think i'll put a playlist together showing my recommendation of videos to go through as a total beginner. I'm looking at providing a lot more 'structure' in my online courses which i'm currently developing.

Hi great lesson, thanks for your time and effort. I've just retired and my wife got me a keyboard as a gift because I've always said I wish I could play an instrument. I've run through these exercises and really enjoyed them.... Obviously I've got to keep at them in order to build some muscle memory. To that end, I find it far easier to finger the chords using digits 1, 2 and 4; not 1,3 and 5. Far more relaxed with little tension. Is this OK, or should I stick with 1,3,5? Thanks in advance, Roy
@Creativepianoacademy
@Creativepianoacademy 5 лет назад
Hey. Its not necessary to stick to 1 3 and 5. In fact as you progress you might want to be comfortable with a variety of fingering as we take this into account when moving between chords. Somtimes its just not practical to use those fingers. So i'd say, practice whats comfortable but keep going back to 1 3 and 5 now and again to try and keep those skills up with your other fingers. But of course... don't stress over it.

Amazing...this video has been a huge help because I'm pretty much a newbie at piano...because I would mainly just search: song tutorials on RU-vid and as I'm coping the video I find it difficult to find the keys because for a newbie I thought I could just skip the practice and just learn a song and I thought it would be easy but it's actually way more complicated than it really should be.. but I realize that if I just try learning one song I'm not really learning how to play the piano I'm really just learning that one song when I could have so much more potential using these tips you shared to practice with XD but I also find it really hard to play both hands at the same time and the right timing with my other hand so that makes it really difficult
@Creativepianoacademy
@Creativepianoacademy 6 лет назад
Hand independence is a real struggle for a lot of people. If you check out my playlists I have one dedicated to this, or least a collection of vids which emphasize it. Its always good to give yourself variety. So In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with learning a song... but allow our skills to compliment each other and pick each up with other exercises and goals. Glad you enjoyed the vid.

Hey man. Have a question about exercise 1. How fast should I be able to play before moving on? At the moment I'm probably playing at the same speed as you do at 3:43 Is that fast enough or should I practice more before going any further (btw I'm watching this video step-by-step so I haven't watch the whole thing yet)
@Creativepianoacademy
@Creativepianoacademy 6 лет назад
Good question. There's no solid answer to this. In my opinion as a teacher, I would say do it for a while until you are generally happy with your ability (sounds like you got there)... then do something else to compliment it. Introduce a few things you can cycle through and you will notice your skills start helping each other up as you move around. Don't do too much at once so you're over loaded, but don't just stick to one thing only. 2 or 3 things to cycle through should see you right. smoothness and precision with those fingers is better than speed in the early days.
