The top five reasons why you should buy and own a Cessna Cardinal:
• You already know how to fly it.
• They will hold their value.
• Maintenance will be manageable
• A Cardinal is an airplane you can grow into as a pilot
• A Cardinal is easy on the fuel.
A Cessna Cardinal is an awesome first plane to own, and they can be hard to find. To be perfectly honest, I bought mine knowing full well what needed to be upgraded. Here are the numbers of what I spent so far, after two years of ownership: I paid 38,000 for the plane. I put in 25,000 of avionics upgrades and my maintenance has averaged about 3,500 a year. All in all buying this plane made my life better. That is the best you can do in my book!
Cessna Cardinals have a cult following and you’ll always be able to buy and sell a Cessna Cardinal. Just in the time I have had this RU-vid channel I have had several offers to buy my plane, It is not for sale, not yet anyway. Now here is a slice of my experience in “ getting money out of things…. It’s may not be wise to enter into a luxury purchase such as an airplane, a boat, a specialty car or even an RV with the thought of “will I get my money out of it when I sell?” It may not be best to think like that because you can’t put a value on its use and the value owning and using this adds to your life.
There are numerous owners groups, like cardinal flyers online for support, and every cardinal owner will talk to you and share their ownership experience with you. And when you upgrade you will always be able to sell it quickly. Owning a Cessna Cardinal will make your life better!
Have you always wanted to learn how to fly but now you are over 50? Get out there and start and learn! There are so many people in there 50's and 60's who are just starting to fly so what are you waiting for?

How can a guy who actually owns a Cardinal miss the most obvious reasons to buy one?! The FIRST reason is called “entry / exit ease”. Try naming another airplane that easier to get in and out of. Cessna is missing the boat by not placing the Cardinal back in production and marketing the plane to all of us older, less flexible and less nimble pilots. The SECOND reason to buy a Cardinal is that it has the best visibility of any high wing Cessna ever made. The pilot can actually sight along the leading edge of the wing and see where he is turning. You did OK with the rest of your reasons and I don’t mind helping you out...this time. You’re on your own from here on out. Keep up the good work.

Brian Lott totally agree. Easiest airplane to get in and out of. I flew 152, 182, 172 and didn’t even notice a difference when stepping into the Cardinal. Super airplane.

One thing with the 180hp if you fly it at the same speeds as the 150hp you will burn will have the same gph fuel burn or less and your rate of climb will be much better.

Another great video Ted! I’ve had my Cardinal for five years now and have had much the same experience with costs. It’s been very dependable. Love this plane!! Since I’m just sitting around right now, I think I’ll take flight.

Great videos! I must of watched all of them before finally deciding to buy our first plane. We just bought a 76' Cardinal 177RG last week and it's getting it's import inspection right now (we care in Canada). Your videos was a great perspective of owning, you talk costs which is important and i like how you explain avionics as not a (investment) but in simply being safer as a pilot. Looking forward to getting my plane back and starting to learn all over again. Thanks

Third gen Piper guy here. I’ve maintained and flown a few 177s. For the same money, Comanche 180 is my pick - runs circles around it and better gross. Only thing you got me on is looking out the window on sightseeing flights. I do like em though. Very roomy.

You left out one of the top reasons: it looks cool. I had a friend with one. They look fast sitting on the ground. The sloped windscreen and no struts make it look fast.

Found this video because I'm researching Cardinals as an option for my first plane. I'd donate a testicle to the FAA to find a flyable Cardinal for $38k in 2022! 😅You'd be lucky to pay five figures for a 177B right now. Thanks for sharing!

@@thomasfinch5605 don’t tell me which one. I may snatch it up! Still looking, myself, and prices continue to climb! I got an insurance quote that was 120% higher for the RG, and that would price the RG right tour of contention, even with the relative savings of going 20kts faster on basically the same burn. @@ddthompson42 It's a 68 177 with the o320 so that may be why it's priced lower. All the A and B models are in the $110k+ range. I was wondering about the insurance for a RG vs fixed... I knew it would be more but over double... I have more time than money, I'll take the slower cruise speed lol

That will be my first airplane. I love the look of the straight leg Cardinal. I am 68 year old black flight instructor and have forever loved that strutless plane. I want the 180 H.P. model. The view is spectacular, the room is much greater than the 172 and its just a for better, smoother flying aircraft.

Since many of your viewers are 50+ it is worth mentioning that the Cardinal is the easiest plane around to enter and exit because of the low ground clearance and 48" wide doors with 90 degree opening. It''s the ONLY small plane I can get my handicapped wife into. I owned a fixed gear for 17 years and recently upgraded to an RG. Fuel consumption on the RG at altitude and properly leaned is less than a Cessna 152, plus she cruises at 140+ knots. Simply a fantastic personal aircraft. To your viewers looking at buying a Cardinal, don't even think about it without first joining Cardinal Fliers Online for all the Cardinal knowledge and assistance one could possibly hope for. 1. Up-Sell the Cardinal 2. Aircraft demand increases / Price goes up as a result 4. Sell personal aircraft 5. Spend extra $$$ on new boat 6. Create channel "Over 60 and Learning to Sail!" 7. Rinse and repeat in a few years I get that right? :) Just kidding / keep up the great vids.

Did the sailing thing for over 40 years - liveaboard - long distance - the whole thing - loved it but I never want to walk into another west marine store again 🤣🤣🤣🤣

You are a very logical and down to earth guy. Also wise too. #2 of your 5 reasons why owning a Cardinal is the wises advice you could have given. Your thoughts and views are as mine too. Those people who change vehicles as they change underwear should not invest in anything that requires patience and understanding. Those kind of people I call the disposal type. I have been checking out different Cardinals. I am interested in a 4 cylinder. Right now it is a toss up between the 360 motor or the 390 motor. Looking for more of a cross country flying long range flying (Florida to Kansas to California) I have family living there.

Your videos on your Cardinal is paving the ground as to me knowing the capabilities and potential a Cardinal will deliver and what to expect. Keep the technical info flowing. PS: Have you given any thought of upgrading your 150 HP ENGINE to a 180 HP or a 200 HP ENGINE WHEN YOU REACH TBO??? I really don't know if there cost difference of upgrading the engine compare to getting another Cardinal with a larger engine. Think about it. Smiles

I am 52 just got my private pilot license last month,I just bought 1968 cardinal picking it up this week,I am pumped.i got trained in 172 cessna I Hurd not much different than cardinal.looking forward to getting in that airplane and forgetting about everything else and just fly

Did my commercial/instrument training in an Arrow and Cardinal. MUCH preferred the Cessna compared to the mid-60s Arrow with stubby Hershey-bar wings. It was a flying rock. Cardinal was awesome but very different than the school's 172s. I found it much different & it didn't feel like a Cessna to me. Yet I fell in love with the Cardinal quickly. Always fought other students over taking it home for the weekend & using it for cross country's. However, the nose gear fairing on this one in the video is ugly. Looks after-market? And the yokes do need some love!

@@Over50andLearningToFly TTAF 2450, TSMOH 490. Appears to be in overall good condition. Almost completely original in and out. Nothing fancy like yours. Some minor cracked plastics. I plan to have a prebuy done, but the price is so mysterious as there are like no comps. Just an elderly gentleman who no longer wants to fly. I will be looking at the plane in person within a few weeks. (It is currently snowed in).

I bought mine in similar condition my engine had a lot more hours on it but I upgraded all the avionics and I’m just about to do the interior as well but that actually sounds pretty good. Mmm, I thought about a Cardinal, looked at Controller.com and Trade-A-Plane, only to see 4 of them. The prices were way too high even for the VFR ones. I decided that a Mooney is what I want and sticking to. Was in contract for one but the pre buy inspectiong failed. Several crack in the firewall. Back on the hunt for that interesting Mooney.

Jerome S on the m20's the firewall is not a structural. The tube frame is the main structure. The firewall can be patched with just a logbook entry. If that was the only squak knock a few bucks off the price to repair it and press on. Needless to say that's just 1 A&P option.

@@tqmx1 the cracks are where the engine bracket is attached to the airframe. The plane is not airworthy and an estimate was about 15Gs to repair or more. No parts like that available too so best to walk. In contract with a nicer one at the moment.

@@Over50andLearningToFly You are right. A friend of mines has a M20J and he flew me to see this M20C and just by getting into the C model, I felt like I came out of a Camry and sat in a Corolla. The J models are more roomy, but I'm working with the Mooney is what I want. One of the turn off i had with the Cardinal is the speed which you mentioned in one of your earlier videos.

The Cardinal has a lighter touch that the 182, is easier to get into and has more shoulder room. The 182 will likely lift more, but you'll be more comfortable in a Cardinal.

@@Over50andLearningToFly Thank you for the reply, do you also have the integral wing tanks like my Cessna 172P? If so is it your belief not seeing any water in. your sump cup means there is no water in the tank?

@@robertscovill6084 I’m not a mechanic but if there’s no water in the sump there’s gonna be no water in the tanks those stumps are the lowest point and water will pop out but if you’re not seeing it it’s definitely not in the tanks. I would consult with a mechanic just to make sure but yeah there’s probably no Water in your tank.

We maintained a 177 owned by a huge guy. Not just tall but wide too. He bought the 177 because it fit him better than a 172 or even a 182. So he said. 👍
