HBO's The Wire follows the drug trade of Baltimore, featuring ruthless gangsters and mobsters like Omar Little Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell and Marlo Stanfield. But the show does have small moments where characters break the rules and choose to do the right thing instead of the easy thing.
Here is a countdown of the most gangster moments of The Wire, the scenes where characters did something noble and honourable.

I have to admit I was fighting back a few tears during the last minute of this video. Your takes on this show are very kind, intelligent, and very insightful. So it pains me to the point of being actually offended, that David Simon would be so contemptible towards you on Twitter...excuse me; "X" You clearly love the show as much as we do, and my respect for your opinions is immune to any contrary opinion I may have had on any of your previous videos. Thanks for this upload! Happy Holidays to you and yours! Be safe! Chris SF Bay Area, California USA

David Simon is an asshole to everyone on Twitter apparently… it’s a shame because if he just let the stories tell themselves instead of adding his own personal entitled feelings he could go down in history as one of the best to ever do it but ever since We Own This City he cant get out of his own way

Yeah that Avon, Cutty, Slim scene was tremendous. By letting Cutty go, Avon actually does something good for the society by allowing him to open up a gym and maybe sway some of the troubled kids into doing something good with their lives. World's apart from Marlo's 'do what I say or die' attitude. I cannot imagine how it would have played out if Cutty said the same stuff to Marlo about not being in the game anymore, Cutty would have ended up in a boarded up building.

Cutty admitting that his heart "ain't in the game" anymore is not only one of the best moments in the episode, but in the entire series. Because Cutty knew that saying something like that out loud in THAT setting could be a death sentance, but he still said it out of RESPECT for who Avon was, and what it took to BE "in the game" in general.

@@raymondsims7042 It does not seem as if you have thought about the big picture regarding Michael. Imo Michael was a good kid because he was doing the best he could in an untenable situation. If you recall the reason Michael went to Marlo, after turning down all of Marlo's attempts to recruit him, was to protect Bug from the pervert daddy. So yes Michael did commit murder but, to me, he was a good kid in a no win situation.

But there’s no way I could truly consider Michael in season 5 to be a “good kid” but I completely empathize with the reasoning as to why he turned out the way he did. It’s a very very tragic story. The finest show ever made. Enough said. Layered, complex and all connected. The more things change the more they stay the same. I like the gritty raw uncompromising story telling, which although spells doom for some of your favourite characters it's reflective of life in Baltimore and life in the game. The characters are victims of their circumstances and know no other life. We get moments when the writer builds them up, gets us to like them, pulls the rug from under them which makes the story more devastating. We also get moments when characters are faced with important decisions which frustrates the viewer but is a sign of excellent storytelling (just look at the comments section on RU-vid wire clips also the sopranos etc). This is fine storytelling at its finest, has us thinking about it and its characters long after completion etc another sign of a good story. I could go on. This is one of the finest shows ever made. Have a good day reader

Thank you for your analysis. This series was a hit due to great writing, direction, and great acting. And all the other things that go into a brilliant production. But all of it stems from the city of Baltimore itself. I got out of prison in 1991. I had a serious drug habit before going in. When I got out I went up there, twenty miles one way without owning a car, from my home to Baltimore, to try the heroin there. I tried the heroin for twenty years. We went up at all hours, twenty fours a day, every day of the year. And the humanity you've seen on the screen in "the Wire" was reflected by the humanity we saw in the streets of Baltimore. Make no mistakes about it, have no illusions on this issue, Baltimore is a very dangerous city. And on the streets even good men get mugged. But I saw many times that those who walked honorably, upright, and humbly, were themselves rewarded for that humanity, and by the same cast of characters that made up the series. Real people, from drug dealers, and soldiers, from cops to criminals. People who, despite their environment, played the game with humility, compassion and wisdom. ( Everything's in my autobiography.) Maybe it was just my karma, my good fortune, but over twenty years I saw first hand people playing the game straight! Honor, humility and humanity are not dead in Baltimore. To all the brothers out on those corners. To Lenny at S. Carey, to the cops that didn't bust me, to the C.O.'s at the correctional facilities. To all the brothers on that paper chase. Thank you. Good lookin out 'cuz! Keep stacking that cheddar! I got nothing but love for Baltimore.

They had such a great relationship at the start and by the end they barely see each other. I can’t even remember if they interact a single time in season 5. Anyway I think another moment that might qualify for the list is when Chris beats Michaels step father to death for abusing Michael and Bug. He didn’t need to do that but you can clearly see he may have had his own past trauma regarding the issue. Ironically it’s the very thing that brings things crashing down for Marlos empire because of the dna evidence they found at the scene.

#10 is the best scene in the whole show and the most important scene in Season 3. Because, when Cutty comes to him to tell him he wants out, Avon has been going through the same internal quesions he has been asking himself. Do I stay in the game or get out? Do I get out half way like Stringer wants me to? Do I stay and fight? I don't know how to do anything else - what will I do without this life? Cutty has a lot more left to lose than Avon - he has no money and potentially can get killed for his decision - yet he is firm in knowing what is right for him. Ultimately, I think it is what causes Avon to stay in the game. He respects that Cutty has taken a firm position and he does too - that the game is his life, he's good at it, and it has been good to him. He's not going to take Stringer's half in-half out position of getting out but playing financier.

Someone feel free to correct me but in Season 2 Ott doesn't step down from running as treasurer of the IBS out of respect for Frank. He drops out of the run because the union has all eyes on it and he doesn't want to be caught up in the mess Frank created. Thereby having the local decertified and run by the Justice dept. If Ott had stayed in the race he would have won by default and IBS would have stayed independent.

Ott took his campaign poster down cause the federal da said they had to elect a new union leader or be forced to shut down after Frank had been Murdered

Good point. I never saw it like that. I could believe either interpretation.

One recommendation for honorable mention: the brief, poignant scene in the school hallway between Cutty and Grace. Once an item, they both realize their paths in life have diverged and are moving on. It's a scene that could easily have been omitted as Simon & Co. were culling to fit the episode into an hour, but it's a really nice touch.

At 1:49, it's Ott, not 'Otto' who steps down. Apart from that, good video.

After Herc f's up by losing the camera to Marlo, and Internal Affairs comes calling for Dozerman, Sydnor and Herc, he takes sole responsibility. He's an idiot, but at least he wasn't trying to spread the blame in that moment.
