I was fortunate to be able to fly the F-16 and F/A-18 in my career, but many viewers have asked what aircraft I wish I could have flown. Here's my top 5 Non-US Jets list.

As a Swede I’m glad you put the Gripen at number one. I have a feeling people tend to don’t like the Gripen because of the lack of thrust to weight ratio but it will be better with the E-version and the fighter fits the Swedish airspace perfect.

As a Brit I'm glad we got the Typhoon , fed up with being the Oliver Twist of NATO - imagine trying to take on Vipers , Eagles ,Hornets & Tomcats in a Lightning or Phantom in friendly exercises. The Tornado F3 was a step up but dogfighter it was not .

@Pale_Nomad
@Pale_Nomad Месяц назад
admittedly, I would have rather the Brits and Germans had defer'd to the french during the eurofighter project. politics around the development project aside I prefer the Rafale over the Typhoon and in my eyes the squall, tranche for tranche is both more capable than the Typhoon with a superior ECM suite and cheaper. in the long run I think alot of mistakes made (especally by the british government) would have been avoided if from the get go they had the rafale... case and point the delays to the queen liz and buggerlugs (prince of wales) due to arguments over making them STOVL or CATTRAP carriers. If the UK had Squalls leading up to the laying down of the hulls I think they would have been catapult carriers. that would have given Britain more options (such as leasing or purchasing Rafale Ms or F/A18Es to fly off the carriers) while waiting for the Lightnings to be built rather than having 2 carriers with nothing to fly off them for what? 5 years?
@Retrosicotte
@Retrosicotte Месяц назад
@@Pale_Nomad That isn't how the QE class history went though. They were designed from the outset for F-35 and were always intended for it. The carriers entered service in 2017, and got their jets in 2018, so there was no real delay in practical terms. Going for F/A-18s or Rafale Ms would have just meant getting a previous gen fighter in very small numbers for great expense and no real benefit in the end since F-35 was coming along very soon regardless. There was never a plan to operate older gen jets in the carrier force.
@glynnwright1699
@glynnwright1699 Месяц назад
@@Pale_Nomad Have you ever worked with the French on an aerospace project? I can tell you from personal experience that they are a complete nightmare. On every tiny detail, it is 'my way or the highway' with them. The UK has made a lot of money out F35, between 15% and 20% of every F35 is made in the UK, depending on the variant. There probably wouldn't be the engineering capability in the UK to do Tempest, if the UK had chosen Rafale. The Italians are excellent partners, we rated them the best of the three countries when it came to engineering and the Japanese are ahead of the USA in some sensor technologies. So Tempest is off to a good start and well ahead of the Franco/Spanish/German 6th generation equivalent. The argument about the launch method for the carriers is very complex and was, no doubt, done to death by the OR groups. I am not sure that it would have been any better waiting five years for the USN to sort out EMALS, than for F35Bs. In the February report on Gerald R Ford it was noted that the only thing that was keeping EMALS operational was 24/7 engineering support from continental USA.

Yeah, the Gripen is my favourite European jet. For all the reasons you said but _also_ for all the time and thought they've put into what needs to be done to keep it in the air. You just need a road strip, it's very STOL capable and requires only a weapons truck, fuel truck and two basically trained soldiers to turn it around and get it airborne again, i live that kind of holistic thinking when it comes to war fighting, it's so important. This is why Gripen is _the_ jet for Ukraine. Saab just needs to make a version over which America holds no sway.

As a Brit, I agree: the Typhoon and Gripen excel at different jobs. They're not the same at all. As an all round practical war fighting machine for an air force like Sweden's or Ukraine's and operating in such close proximity to the Russia with the war fighting philosophy and organisation of these countries, the Gripen is pretty much an unbeatable proposition for short and medium range missions. It's a fantastic and practical war-fighting aircraft with a wonderful electronic warfare suite - some of which will apparently find its way onto the German ECR variant of the Typhoon. And naturally the Gripen is exceptionally cost-effective and simple to operate. The Typhoon is really excellent at what it was originally designed for and in the way that the RAF uses it: QRA and long distance intercept over the sea, with a secondary (and now really pretty good) air-to-ground precision strike role. But it wasn't designed to operate from austere runways or with the shorter turnarounds and lower maintenance staffing requirements that the Gripen delivers.

Mover, how did you go from the F-16 to the F-18? Was it difficult to transfer from Airfoce to Navy?

YES! The Grippen is my FAV! There are some video's explaining the engineering that went into the Grippen, the tail nozzle blending is amazing! I believe it has a definate edge over the F-16!

Might as well translate it to "Griffin" or "Gryphon" whichever spelling you are into. Since almost no one use the Russian names for the MiG and Sukhois, why use the Swedish name (mutilated by English pronunciation) for the SAABs?

First flying 15 years after the F-16 and being basically all that Sweden works on, you would kind of hope so.

As a non-pilot, my wish list is long but distinguished (so's my Johnson, name the movie this quote is from) but to narrow it to the top 5 would be, in order, the C-5M Super Galaxy at #5, then the F-4E Phantom II, then the F/A 18E/F Super Hornet, the C-17 Globemaster III and at number 1 is the Tomcat. I graduated high school when Top Gun was released and it made my join the Navy. Spent 4 years on the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 1986 (yes, I am a Plank Owner) to 1990 as an Aviation Ordnance Tech in the G-3 Division of the Weapons Department (a Mag Rat). I was mostly in a missile magazine working with the Sidewinder, Sparrow and Phoenix. I made 2nd class petty officer (E-5) and was honorably discharged right before Desert Storm. When we we were at sea, when I got off duty I headed up to the observation deck on the Island which was deck 14 which puts you about 50 above the deck and right between the arresting gear when it was fully stretched out and the mid-ship (waist) catapults. Spent hours watching flight ops. Special memories!

I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. I saw an interview with an IAF commander who was inspecting a base in northern India equipped with a squadron of Rafale fighter jets. The commander flew the Su-27 and the Su-30 during his career. He said the Rafale was a superb aircraft with 10 times the capabilities of the old Sukhoi jets he used to fly and he wished he could fly it today. The IAF has a lot of Su-30s in their fleet and they test them against the Rafale in training maneuvers. A lot of the IAF pilots say they want to fly the Rafale, which may tell you how they perform against the Russian Sukhoi jets. I see that the Indian Navy bought another batch of Rafale M variants for the Vikrant aircraft carrier over the Super Hornet. I guess Dassault is doing something right.
