I see Adam Levine in the thumbnail... Honestly I'd be ok with Moves Like Jagger being at least an honorable mention because to me it's one of those big iconic hits of the early 2010s. And of course we all know #1 is Don't Mine at Night.
Zac Brown in 2011: Puts out one of the best written, most beautifully orchestrated hit songs of the current millennium. Zac Brown in 2019: h0w'S iT g0iNg I'M a c0w, y0u DrINk MiLk fR0m mY TiTS.
I'm so glad you put Remind Me on here. Thought I was the only one that think it's so underrated when I found the song again while going through the 2011 hits. Two great vocal talents, and some surprisingly profound lyrics.
2011 was truly a transition year from the club decadence 09-10 to the more fulfilling pop years of 12-14. While recent years imo have been a little sparse in terms of good pop I still can’t wait to see what direction it will go in the future.
I wouldnt go that far in my opinion but that song is bomb as fuck. I loved it even back when I first heard it when I was little and its so sad how underrated it was.

Someone Like You-Adele The top 8 are all 10/10 songs, which is the most for any year this decade. What’s very telling is that we had so many fun, upbeat pop songs that were much better than the previous year, and yet the sheer number of upbeat songs made the emotionally resonant songs all the more powerful. Combine that with the fact that this was the first year I listened to the radio in any capacity (which adds a lot of nostalgia), yeah, how can this not be my favorite year of the decade?
@@fuckingloser2817 that's not what I meant, I know that Spectrum Pulse is Canadian. I was wondering if the guy who commented this (the one with the Gravity Falls profile pic) is from Europe, because it was still November 30th in North America, but it was already December 1st in Europe.
Take a shot every time Mark says "kicks ass", haha! Seriously though, I agree with a lot of this list, particularly 'Someone Like You' & 'Back To December' both inside the Top 3. :)
Dundee it may have spelled the end of Maroon 5 making good music, but it was a pretty good song on its own. It’s weird, the actual sellout moment was really good, but everything afterwards wasn’t.

10. Fun club jam. 9. See #10. 8. Umm, why didn't Lupe like this song, it's one of the best hit rap songs of the decade. 7. Kanye at his best. 6. And the memories come flooding back... 5. Obvious pick for obvious reasons. 4. Lady Gaga: Jack of all trades, and master of them too. 3. Umm, why can't Taylor put out more stuff like this? 2. See #5. HM1. Nostalgia bomb, and an awesome song to boot! HM2. I was first exposed to this through the Social Tune's Worst of 2011 list, so I'll need more time to think about it and see who I agree with. HM3. See HM1. HM4. Incel anthem or not, it's still an awesomely profane jam. HM5. Shame that he would make one of the worst songs of the decade just two years later. HM6. Early 2010s Pop in a nutshell. HM7. Ohh, I see the double entendre ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). 1. Best hit country song of the decade, and yes that does include Even Though I'm Leaving and Marry Me.
I'd say I'm more surprised for Moves Like Jagger myself, partially because I knew it was their first ever selling out moment. Shame I didn't know how hardcore they'd sell themselves out, but you know how it is. Also, I don't see Cee-Lo Green's song as an incel anthem, and fuck those people that did force it into a kind of thing!
I think I first heard Back To December in 2011-2012 when it was on the charts, but only once or twice and I wasn't paying too close attention. 2016 was when I first heard it while paying attention and it's the song that convinced me to take a deep dive into Taylor Swift's catalog (ahead of Blank Space and Style which are great and almost did it, but not quite). Now that I've done the deep dive though, I don't think Back To December stands out that much. Much of her Speak Now album uses a fairly similar sonic palette even if the songs are about different topics or have a different energy to them (ex Enchanted, Haunted and Long Live). She also has several other songs with strong emotional storytelling like Enchanted, All Too Well, Last Kiss and Getaway Car. And there's other songs with a similar kind of emotional maturity, Getaway Car is one, but there's others like Afterglow and Holy Ground.
I feel "we r who we r" is a weak song. I do like "Blow' and is one of Kesha's strongest songs so infectious. I like your pick for "Remind Me" such an overlooked song from that year. I always felt "Back to December" is maybe her strongest song writing effort overall. And I also noticed those same chord progressions in "Sweet Annie". But I have always liked "Colder Weather". I'd have possibly included "Raise Your Glass" by P!nk, "what's my name" Rihanna and Drake and "If I Die Young" The Band Perry.
Two things about If I Die Young: 1. It’s ineligible for 2011 for Mark because it made the 2010 year-end. 2. In my personal opinion, while the instrumentation is very good, Kimberly has almost no stage presence, and the lyrical content focuses so much on fantasizing about dying young, that it ends up coming off as rancid. That being said, your opinion is your opinion, and we can’t change each other’s opinions, and that’s fine. It’s good to find people with differing opinions, as it can develop your opinions with others, like a mallet tempering metal.
Here's mine: 10: Blow-Ke$ha (it's catchy, OK) 9: What The Hell-Avril Lavigne 8: Tonight Tonight-Hot Chelle Rae (grew up with this one-total classic) 7: Stereo Hearts-Adam Levine 6: Raise Your Glass-P!NK 5: Last Friday Night-Katy Perry 4: Good Life-One Republic 3: Back to December-Taylor Swift 2: Moves Like Jagger-Maroon 5 1: What Makes You Beautiful-One Direction
Been waiting for this one and I couldn’t agree much more with most of these picks, every one of these songs takes me right back. 2011 was the first year I started paying attention to popular music and it remains my favorite year of the charts this decade. Also pleasantly surprised to see Hold It Against Me get an honorable mention
2011 was the year I started high-school (I'm Australian so Year Seven) and I forgot how good of a year 2011 was for popular music. Edit: Also, "Miss You" by the Rolling Stones is an awesome song, Mark. Come on man.
My best of 2011: 1. Fuck You - Cee Lo Green 2. Rolling in the Deep - Adele 3. Stereo Hearts - Gym Class Heroes feat. Adam Levine 4. Someone Like You - Adele 5. Tonight Tonight - Hot Chelle Rae 6. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People 7. Grenade - Bruno Mars 8. Price Tag - Jessie J 9. The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco 10. Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera
Eh, Moves Like Jagger was a major selling out point that honestly got worse for the band since then. I'd prefer the Gym Class Heroes moment song myself instead.
Great video. My only real disagreements are: • Blow - I never liked this song, the hook sounds like shit to me. • Hold It Against Me - Nah sorry this era of Britney Spears was not good. None of her 2011 hits were good and this was probably the worst of them. • Lack of Rihanna - What's My Name, We Found Love, S&M, this was one of her best years. She was comfortably ahead of Kesha and Britney in the club bangers stakes around this era. • Also the lack of "The Edge of Glory". I think that song is miles better than most of this list.
1. All Of The Lights - Kanye West 2. The Edge of Glory - Lady Gaga 3. F You - Cee Lo Green 4. More - Usher 5. 6 Foot 7 Foot - Lil Wayne & Cory Gunz 6. Rolling In The Deep - Adele 7. Headlines - Drake 8. The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco 9. Someone Like You - Adele 10. Animal - Neon Trees HM: What's My Name - Rihanna & Drake Teenage Dream - Katy Perry I'm On One - DJ Khaled ft Drake, Rick Ross, & Lil Wayne Sure Thing - Miguel Only Girl In The World - Rihanna Without You - David Guetta & Usher DJ Got Us Falling In Love - Usher Black & Yellow - Wiz Khalifa Jar Of Hearts - Christina Perri Pumped Up Kicks - Foster The People Firework - Katy Perry Just A Dream - Nelly Written In The Stars - Tinie Tempah Back To December - Taylor Swift
Unless you have different eligibility rules, Teenage Dream and DJ got us Falling in Love would’ve be eligible due to also making the 2010 year end. Also, this is just my personal opinion… but Jar of Hearts would be on my worst list for 2011… at number one. It’s bad enough the writing end up coming across as generally weak (namely the ‘You’re gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul’ line) and also falling into the trap of people writing about exes that they portray as pure evil and only wanting to leave them worse off from before the relationship began (songs like Traitor and Amnesia spring to mind), but the worst offender has always been the way it sounds. Christina Perri is a decent singer, but the melody in the verses just oozes around in an unpleasant way, and the production is one of the most miserable I’ve heard on a song. And when I say miserable, I don’t mean a sad song, I’m fine with those. I mean a song so soaked up and wallowing in it’s own melodrama and misery, it leaves me in a worse mood. It is one of the most unpleasantly dour productions that ends up spreading into the listener. I genuinely cannot stand listening to the production. That being said, I respect your opinion and just wanted to give mine.
@@heihogreenzx4704 Yeah I don't have that kinda rule for my lists, if a song manages to last like three years in the year-end 100, then it'll be on my list for three years straight (though that may never actually happen). And as a general rule, I hate piano ballads (Stay, Say Something, Someone You Loved, Lost Boy, What About Us, etc. like a bunch more I can't even think of right now), but Jar of Hearts is one of only a handful of piano ballads that I like (that, Because of You, Ordinary People, Someone Like You, and Driver's License are the only ones I can think of), and it is one of my favorites largely because of what you said. My main problem with typical piano ballads is that they are always super soulless and don't feel like they're actually sad or emotional at all, but are trying to trick the listener into being sad with vocal runs or whatever, like Say Something, I don't really feel that Christina and that other guy are really feeling sad, it's like I can tell that their acting, and also their lyrics are super unnoteworthy and cliché. I didn't notice any of those problems with Jar of Hearts. I think it helped that Perri isn't a perfect (or trying to be) singer on that song because now it feels she actually was despondent as she recorded the song, so it felt so much more genuine to me. And that, combined with the immature lyrics such as the "catch a cold" one that you mentioned, and the entire premise of collecting jars of hearts, it separates the song in my opinion from every other piano ballad I've heard: It doesn't sound like an adult with no real problems trying to convince a bunch of people they have problems (not saying Xtina or Rihanna or Capaldi can't have problems btw it just feels to me like those specific songs/most of the genre doesn't actually have those problems), it sounds like a 14-year-old emo girl writing in her diary after getting broken up for the first time, and I've always respected it for that for some reason. Also the melody and chord progression of that song is really good imo, especially the pre-chorus and final chorus. TLDR: Jar of Hearts is one of the few piano ballads I love because instead of sounding mature like someone trying to manipulate an audience into feeling sorry for her, it sounds immature enough for me to believe it was genuine and unique, and also it just sounds nice with the melody/chords/production/her vocals imo.
@@djmarz7123 Yeah, again, the personal reason I put Jar of Hearts on top isn't because of the writing much, at worst, maybe a dishonorable mention or barely scraping on, my main reason is the production, not because it's technically terrible (on a technical level, it's fine.) it just is... oppressively miserable, I guess I can describe it. It just ends up being so forcefully dour, that it ends up going from just a sad song to being one that makes me feel like crap. On the subject of piano ballads, I also have a similar disdain for bad piano ballads, I can like them quite a bit when they're good (like you mentioned: Because of You, Someone Like You (and almost all of Adele's hits for me, really), Ordinary People, Driver's License), as well as When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars, and even piano adjacent songs like Not Over You, Never Say Never, How to Save a Life, and Praying (the latter two topped my best lists for 2006 and 2017, respectively). When they're done well (with either enough convincing maturity, or convincing emotion, or both), they can be great songs. Meanwhile, when done poorly, with poor writing and trying to come off as more than they are, they can (and have) gotten VERY high on my worst lists (as I said, while Jar of Hearts has topped my 2011 worst list, that isn't saying particularly much in comparison to other years, since the worst of 2011 imo is around #5 in a year with more generally bad songs (like 2014), but other piano ballads have topped my worst lists, or gotten close. Unfaithful got to #3 on my 2006 worst list (wasn't #1 because I find Show Stopper and SexyBack worse), I Hate U, I Love U topped my 2016 worst list, If the World was Ending got to #2 on my 2020 worst list, Someone You Loved topped my 2019 worst list, and Changes (which is, in my opinion, the worst piano ballad I have heard so far) got to #3 on my 2018 worst list (might not seem like much, but I consider 2018 to be the worst year for the charts in the 21st century so far.) When piano ballads are bad, they feel cold, calculated, and even pretentious at worst, because they feel like they think the song will be moving due to excessively simple piano lines (fuck's sake, Changes has a TWO NOTE piano line), vague at best writing, and horrendous vocal performances ("AND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII--"). Again, the lyrics to Jar of Hearts are a pretty small gripe I have with the overall song, since the main reason it's even on the list is just because the production sounds so miserable and dour, that it ends up being unpleasant to listen to due to how overly dour it is. That being said, Jar of Hearts, when put alongside the other songs that have topped my personal worst lists, would barely be on it. I wouldn't even have it in my top 5 worst piano ballads, since at least it, to a degree, accomplishes what it wants, and when looked at from other angles, is interesting to analyze, but something I just find almost painful to endure a listen due to it's general feeling of excessive sonic misery. Also, I do think Perri is a decent singer, not a particularly exceptionally good one, but still pretty solid. That being said, this was all my opinion, and I genuinely enjoyed discussing this with you. It was interesting to see another side of the conversation. :)
I feel like I would have liked these songs way better had I not been neck-deep in my “pop music sucks” phase in 2010 hahah. I have to admit pop music back then were much more distinctive than rn
Yeah I gotta say that looking back on it, especially comparing it to the charts in the 2nd half of the decade, 2011 was one of the better year's for the charts in the 2010's, although I mostly find the year just okay, but it led the way for the greatness of 2012 and 2013. I still hold fond memories for several of 2011s songs and it's hard to believe it's been almost a decade now since this year because it really doesn't feel like that long ago. Despite the club boom overexposure, the charts were more diversive than it's previous year and there was some truly great highlights and new trends that would set the decade foreward. Adele was really the last saving grace for 2010's pop along with the Indie movement. There was also the rise of Calvin Harris/David Guetta type Dubstep. I remember You and I first debuted on American Idol when Haley Reinhart sang it. That same night she gave probably one of the best Idol performances ever with House of the Rising Sun. Haley Reinhart is so underrated, and so is You and I. Idk why I brought her up lol just hit with memories I guess lol, but yeah You and I is criminally underrated and one of her best songs
While Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are solid artists in their own right, Haley Reinhart was a much more deserving contender for winning Season 10 of American Idol.
Blow, Stereo Hearts, Colder Weather at #1 (lmao), both Adele songs, You and I, The Show Goes On, Fuck You, I think that's Katy Perry in the corner of the thumbnail? either way nice list here's mine xd 10. Bring Back Kim Possible, Animated Obviously I couldn’t disagree more with Mark here. Sure, some songs didn’t have to be as long as they were, but every single song was still great, so I don’t see how the album itself could’ve possibly dragged on. Also, the features aren’t inconsistent at all. There are like two dozen features throughout the album and only two of them were subpar (Fergie and Chris Rock).
Why on Earth do people still think that Last Friday Night had Kenny G on it? He was only in the video, not on the song proper. I swear to God, Todd in the Shadows got that rumour going back in 2011 and people keep regurgitating it without doing the proper research. To paraphrase Wikipedia: Kenny G did not actually play the sax on the recording. FFS.
I stopped listening to Pop music early in the 2010s. It was Alternative music for a few years. Then, I heard Rolling In the Deep. Ive listened to pop ever since, for better and worse.
Shit, I'm so late here! Still, I can always give my two cents on the situation, so why not? 10.) Heh, figures you'd get Ke$ha (referring to the name she was going as at the time) on your list. :P Still, yeah, in retrospect, the hate for it nowadays is kind of dumb when compared to how abrasive is kind of sounded at that period. 9.) Almost forgot about this one. Blow kind of felt eh for me, though. Didn't really feel that kind of thing you said for it. Kind of similar to Sweet, But Psycho for me like that. 8.) Still very enjoyable and awesome to listen to even after all these years!
I didn't think either of the 2 Ke$ha songs deserved to be on the list and I didn't think Hold It Against Me deserved to be an honorable mention but I respect your opinion on them. I was glad to see both Adele songs make the list. I also agree with you that Back to December is Taylor Swift's best single. Overall a fine list though I'm surprised Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks wasn't at least an honorable mention
i honestly think that lady gaga's born this way is better and aged a lot better that 'We Are Who We Are', also its lyrucs are way more complicated and well thought.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way album was worth every penny. Specifically 99 pennies. That's the album that triggered a rule change because getting a million first week selling your album for a dollar is cheating.
2011 is a pretty overrated year in my opinion. The top 8 or so songs are truly great but beyond that the quality falls away very quickly. In that respect it's basically an upgraded 2016. My picks: 1. Someone Like You - Adele 2. Rolling in the Deep - Adele 3. Back to December - Taylor Swift 4. Colder Weather - Zac Brown Band 5. All of the Lights - Kanye West ft. Rihanna 6. Fuck You - CeeLo Green 7. The Edge of Glory - Lady Gaga 8. The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco 9. Coming Home - Diddy - Dirty Money ft. Skylar Grey 10. For the First Time - The Script Honourable Mentions: • What's My Name? - Rihanna ft. Drake • We Found Love - Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris • S&M - Rihanna • More - Usher • We R Who We R - Ke$ha • Stereo Love - Edward Maya ft. Vika Jigulina • Jar of Hearts - Christina Perri
Shinedown even covered someone like you I would personally argue that it’s stronger but that’s only because I got sick of the original song because of bad personal timing
What The Hell should’ve been on the worst list, but it’s fine it’s your opinion, I just hate how much of a sellout it was, especially with Max Martin’s stale as usual pop production that doesn’t fit well with the rebellious vibe the song was going for (Someone Like Butch Walker probably could have knocked a song like this out of the park) Girlfriend may have sucked but at least it prominently featured guitars
@HØodyToon Salazar! Girlfriend is worse and hopefully it will make Mark’s 2007 worst list when that happens, but at least it had a little bit of edge, What The Hell just sounds way too bland for a song about rebellion, at least it didn’t have that goddamn rap breakdown though
Another good list with lots of songs I remember hearing at the time in middle school. Disagree with We R Who We R, Moves Like Jagger, What The Hell, Hold It Against Me, and 6 Foot 7 Foot. We R Who We R comes across as another annoying party song Kesha was doing at the time than a gay acceptance anthem and that “DJ TURN IT UP UP UP UP” part gets annoying after awhile. Moves Like Jagger is fun and a lot better than what Maroon 5’s put out since but it’s still not that great. Mick Jagger’s someone not exactly known for good looks or good dance moves so bragging about being as good as Mick Jagger is just stupid. What The Hell, Hold It Against Me, and 6 Foot 7 Foot I found annoying. Aside from that, no major disagreements.
And I thought 2011 would be the worst year in music history 12-year-old, and music only get worse, and better weirdly sometimes, and that makes no sense.
22:44 I'm sorry, I H A T E that song, I dont like the vocals and the melody. Also, too much millenial whoop for me. The rest are glorious! Nice video mate
