Couldn't he exchange his meat rations for other people's bread and veggies? I mean it's still not as good in terms of nourishment but not as bad as having straight up holes in your meal

​@@vassalofthenight9945 It won't really matter, bread and veggies still lack some pretty important nutrients and they're not as calorie dense as meat. You can get around those issues with more particular food choices, but he's in the army so that's not happening lol

@@det_tf2 bread is actually fairly dense in calories. As a matter of fact, soliders throughout history survived mostly on bread. Back in the roman empire, bread constituted 50 to 90% of a soldier's daily calorie intake. And it was that way for most of human history. Meat's always been a luxury - only recently has that changed.

Chicken breast is about 110, thighs are up to 170, beef and pork are up to 260. While white bread is about 350 and more for specific variations. Furthermore, bread is carbs which is essentially an energy source, while meat is protein, which is needed for muscle growth and maintanance basically. Judjung by Doss's physique he doesn't need much protein a day, and the amount he needs he can easily get while consuming products other than meat. Though, it is a tough life without meat. I personaly consume daily about 700-800g of pure chicken breasts.

I don't see how his drill instructor would be in danger since they stay at boot camp and teach the next bunch of recruits not go off with the squadron to fight.

@@antzzors126 I did watch it many years ago, yea I forgot, It seemed weird he'd go because of my military experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars in theh+h early 2000s that I think it was an embellishment in the movie to keep Tom Hanks in there. I In real life drill sergeants stay and train.

@@dickJohnsonpeter WWII had a draft. Iraq & Afghanistan didn't. WWII was a total war footing on a national scale. Not the case for Iraq & Afghanistan. Some of the more logistically relevant reasons it was more common in WWII.

It's when they finally respected him. War is hell and if they couldn't trust him to carry a weapon they could at least know he was willing to go through hell with him. That's true warrior brotherhood.

They thought they were acting for the good of the unit. You can't keep a weak link around in a fighting unit. Sometimes a beatdown motivates a weak member to get their shit together. Happened in the Navy as well.

@@Treborianus Huh? The army had a perfectly valid reason to be against Doss' beliefs. Why would you go into a battlefield with a comrade who doesnt hold a gun, yet you are all going to fight enemies with guns. If someone pulls up on Doss' gaurd duty, he cant shoot them.

Just because somebody cant be forced to a use a weapon to take somebody's life, nobody should be able to force you to go to a gunfight with a partner that doesn't have a single gun.

@@gabrieldacostamartins5666the thing is. If an army or military is correct they will see the usage of every resource they have. Especially in a time of war. It is adapting to a situation. They didn’t have an endless list of men to draw from for this war so they have to use every man as best as possible even if that means utilising him in a different manner.

A hazing like this is actually still common. There’s a term for it, called a “blanket party,” and how you saw it in Full Metal Jacket is exactly how it’s done realistically. My own platoon in basic training were considering doing it to a private who had constantly been causing us problems. Thankfully it never ended up happening, but mind you this was just 11 years ago.

I still carry shame that I didn't stand up to stop it but Basic is all about groupthink and peer pressure and fear. Anyone that participated was not a person I considered a friend. Didn't care for the victim either but he was just lazy and mouthy to the Drills, not malevolent.

@@soul1d Oh, I don't know about that. They may not face consequences in the sense of being arrested and punished, sure. But I don't think that's quite the same as never facing consequences. The consequence of being scum is that you never really get to partake in the advantages of being a decent person. You are not going to experience true friendship, unlikely to find any love that lasts, and your pleasures shall generally be confined to the physical ones. There are some advantages to such a life, I'll accept. But no consequences? That isn't quite right either.

It's always interesting how those men in the barracks with him, consider themselves so strong, yet are somehow so offended by a man they consider weak and a coward. I know they bring up "he poses a risk to his fellow soldiers if he refuses to fight", but his job is to be a Medic, his job isn't to fight. If it gets down to the medics needing to fight and not caring for the wounded, you are probably f'd anyway.

In the classical world this was the highest definition of braver - fortitude. Being able to fight/attack wasn't the highest form of courage - being willing to suffer/take blows even when you couldn't fight back was at the heart of fortitude. Sometimes all we can do is interpose our body between those we have a duty to defend and take the hit meant for them.

It’s more common than you think, also think of it from there perspective. Here is a guy who is not going to use a weapon or defend you on the battlefield. If he’s on the battlefield and need to defend himself or more importantly his squad he won’t. That is something that most people in the army would be against or see as you not caring about the lives of your squad for superficial moral reasons.

Well sunrise is usually 6am in April in Okinawa where and when hacksaw ridge took place, but let's say march since that was the battle and not training. So 6:45am, but would get bright-ish about 25-30 mins before sunrise, so we'll say its 6:30 just to meet in the middle. They'd still be asleep

It's probable that there were lights outside the barracks that illuminated through the windows. This likely took place in the middle of the night.

Because it's a movie and you need to see shit. The light comes from the same place the music does

It's very accurate. In fact they even left out some of his achievements from the movie to make the story more believable.
