This was a scary day for many in the OKC area, and for good reason. This record-breaking 2.6 mile-wide tornado had winds of 295 mph. And if that's no rare enough, it did something that almost no tornadoes do: track to the south. That factor is widely blamed for the death of Tim Samaras and his crew. This has been a rough two weeks for Oklahoma.

Actually, the tornado at it's greatest width took a hard left turn toward the north, catching Samaras and another storm chaser named Robinson within the bear's cage. It was heading east until it crossed highway 81. While they were about a mile north of the circulation heading east, Samaras and co. thought that since the tornado had an easterly track that they could parallel it by continuing east past highway 81. It was at that time that the tornado hit a trifecta of factors that lead to their demise. It increased to it's full width of 2.6 miles, it increased in the speed it was traveling to around 50 mph and it took a hard left turn right into the path that Samaras and Robinson were driving. Luckily for Robinson, he was just far enough ahead of Samaras to not get caught in the stronger vortecies.

I grew up in Oklahoma and it's one thing when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning but if Gary England from KWTV 9 comes on the air after a NWS tornado warning then you know it's about to become a very bad day.

The same can be said for the residents of Tuscaloosa, Alabama as they know to pay strict attention if James Spann- the weather reporter for ABC 33/40- comes on air and he has his sleeves rolled up. During the April 27th, 2011 tornado that devastated Tuscaloosa, AL; James Spann and the rest of the weather crew at ABC 33-40 managed to successfully warn the residents of Tuscaloosa of how bad the storm was going to be and as a result many people living in Tuscaloosa decided against leaving their homes to attend either Wednesday evening church services, Bible study classes, prayer meetings, etc.

I live in Warr Acres (one of the communities mentioned) and lived through this ordeal. Thankfully the tornado that hit El Reno dissipated before it reached Warr Acres and the more densely-populated areas of the Oklahoma City metro area, but it was still a terrifying experience. In addition to the tornado threat, there was also major flash flooding across the area, which hindered not only attempts by civilians to get out of the storm's path, but also efforts of first responders to reach the impacted areas.

Tornado emergency is different than a tornado warning. Tornado emergency is usually read out to be more specific
@michaellovely6601
@michaellovely6601 4 года назад
@@jamesgentry13 That's right. When a Tornado Emergency is issued; it is done when a large destructive tornado has been sighted by either storm spotters, Doppler radar or law enforcement agencies and is moving towards a heavily populated area with a high possibility of fatalities or serious injuries. In fact; the first ever Tornado Emergency was issued in the May 3rd, 1999 tornado outbreak that devastated Moore, OK and Bridge Creek, OK.

I feel extremely bad for Tim's widow Cathy Samaras as she not only had to lay her husband to rest but also her son. To be honest I'm surprised that Cathy hasn't gone completely insane from grief. I also can't imagine the amount of Survivor's Guilt felt by storm chaser Dan Robinson as he was just a few yards ahead of Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young on Reuter Road. Dan no doubt wonders why did he survive but Tim, Paul and Carl did not.

Regarding live NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts: It is correctly stated that these are done often in the OKC area, especially for a weather emergency -- and remember, Moore had JUST been hit 10 days prior, and this tornado threatened to strike that city again. I believe all NWS offices nationwide have the capability to do the same -- however, not all use it. That's something that, if anyone from the NWS is viewing these, I would like to encourage them to do for at least major severe weather events (like 4/27/11 across the southeastern U.S., 3/2/12 in the Ohio Valley, and other major outbreaks). Just my two cents from a weather enthusiast who occasionally chases these things.

Think of how lucky many residents were on this day. Firstly, southbound and northbound lanes of traffic on both the John Kilpatrick and I-44 became gridlocked by people trying to flee out of the tornado's path, making them sitting ducks. Secondly, the tornado veered off to the north and died out about 10 miles before ever striking Yukon and the OKC metro. Think of what would have happened if a 2.6 mile wide tornado with winds up to 295 mph had struck the OKC metro along with those stalled motorists. I know that eight people lost their lives, but it could have been so much worse.

What dictates an "Tornado Emergency"? I do realize it's an elevated form of a TOR (?) but isn't it used to quickly grab people's attention if a tornadic storm is about to hit a huge populated area?

A tornado emergency is an enhancement, which means that it still outwardly looks like a tornado warning until A. The tornado was confirmed by weather spotters, B. It's demonstrably violent, And/or C. It's headed directly toward a very populous area. A similar comparison would be the particularly dangerous situation enhancement to the tornado watch, which means that tornadoes have a higher than usual change of being powerful.

Unfortunately, that is unusual, but not unexpected, as the storm was moving from west to east. The Coriolis Effect on such a large system, made the storm turn to the right, and that resulted in it turning southward. Tim Samples was one of the best, but even the best can be fooled by the unexpected actions of the Finger of God (EF-5). Never trust that it will always be going towards the East or North. That is complacency, and such will get you killed. God Bless all of you affected!

@MichaelLovely-mr6oh
@MichaelLovely-mr6oh 3 месяца назад
Here's a script I have for a scenario of a Tornado Emergency being issued for the Joplin, Missouri tornado on May 22nd, 2011. "The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued a Tornado Warning for northeastern Newton County in southwest Missouri, southwestern Jasper County in southwest Missouri, southeastern Cherokee County in southeast Kansas, eastern Labette County in southeast Kansas until 6 PM Central Daylight Time. At 5:17 PM Central Daylight Time; National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a tornado near Riverton, or four miles north of Baxter Springs moving east at thirty miles per hour. This is a Tornado Emergency for the city of Joplin! In addition to a tornado; large destructive hail up to tennis ball size is expected with this storm. Locations impacted include Baxter Springs, Carl Junction, Cliff Village, Columbus, Denis Acres, Diamond, Dunweg, Duquesne, Fidelity, Galena, Granby, Iron Gates, Joplin, Leawood, Lowell, Oakland Park, Readings Mill, Riverton, Saginaw, Shoal Creek Drive, Shoal Creek Estates, Shoal Creek Estate and Silver Creek. Interstate 44 between mile markers zero and thirteen will also be affected by this storm. The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture! If no basement is available; seek shelter on the lowest floor of a sturdy building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets and pillows to cover your body and always stay away from doors and windows! If in a mobile home, a vehicle or outdoors; evacuate and get to a more substantial structure. If no shelter is available; lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert and cover your head with your hands. Do not stop under bridges or highway overpasses! They will not protect you from a tornado! The tornado may be hidden by rain and very difficult to see. Do not wait to see or hear the tornado! If you wait to see or hear it coming; it may be too late! Do not wait. Take cover now!"

@Galactipod
@Galactipod 6 лет назад
The three shorter tones are sort of like dial-up, to us they just sound like tones, but computers can decode it and see what the warning is, where it's for, and when it expires. The long tone after that is just to grab our attention. The three short beeps at the end are also like dial-up, they signal computers to continue regular programming.
