I had no idea what a digiscope was and looked to RU-vid, this excellent video provided the answer in an easy to follow and understand manner. Thank you to the team

Thank you for the informative video, now I understand the 8,10 and 12 magnification.. It's hard to look and enjoy the beauty of a bird or a butterfly if the picture isn't steady. If not using a tripod, then an 8 would be fine, even a 10 is a bit shaky.

Thanks Guys, loved the video, very informative, just got My first spotting scope from Lidl, only £25, it was the last one so thought if I don't grab it for the price I'd only regret it, I know it was only cheap but it's a starter!, Thanks again.

I had my first attempt at digiscoping yesterday, using my ATX bought from Clifton with the 30-70x95 module. Great results overall, although some vignetting at the higher end of focal length using my D500 camera.

Hi Martin, Just looking again at your spotting scope video; my SV Bony 80mm spotting scope has FMC ….I’m not quite sure what Fully Multi Coated means but in your view is this ok. Kind regards Ken.

Failed to mention the golden rule in regard to magnification/objective lens. Always times the magnification by 4. So if the magnification is 8, then 8x4 = 32 so the minimum objective lens size for that magnification would be 32. 40 would be better as it will allow more light in however 20 would be too small and quite dark when you looked through them.
@josepheveson6187
@josepheveson6187 3 года назад
That doesn’t work quite so well with scopes though right? 4x 40 would require a 160mm lens - the largest scope lenses run to 95mm.

I have a small pair that are 10x25. I find it hard to look through. The lens holders slide open and closed. It isn't too bad in a pinch, but I would rather get a good scope or better binoculars. I live in Florida and there is lots to see. There is this one alligator. He lives in one of the natural parks. I love looking at him because he is huge. I couldn't tell you how far he is from my view.

ED and APO were mentioned, but not by any means clearly defined. I was particularly looking for a clear definition of APO.

Well explained. Very easily understood albeit under the strain of hearing your voices through the noise of the cars. Would have been better deeper into the woods away from the road.

First numbers magnification second number is the secondary lense and howmuch light it let's in 50 is gudd binocs average, 90_100 is high for a spotting scope, ie if yiu want to spot in low light yiu want the second number to be high, ie by moonlight etc

An excellent video, though I noticed no mention of waterproofing or anti fogging which are crucial for birding. Please could you tell me what tripod the ATX was on?
@clifton-cameras
@clifton-cameras 6 лет назад
Thank you for your comment Mark. We did forget to discuss waterproofing and weather sealing and you're quite right those things are important, if you have any questions don't hesitate to call or email us. The tripod the ATX is on is a Manfrotto Nature kit. Martin purchased that tripod and kit in 2000 and it has since been discontinued. The 2018 equivalent would be the Manfrotto 055 aluminium legs (www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/manfrotto-mt055xpro3-new-055-aluminium-tripod-3-leg-section) and RC head(www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/manfrotto-700rc2-composite-video-head).

Clifton Cameras I noticed the other gentleman was using either the 055 or 190, both of which I have for photography. Thank you very much for your reply, what a shame it was discontinued. I got a velbon free with my ATS and the head only lasted 3 years where I use a manfrotto for macro and with my Bronica that’s 30 years old nearly.

APO does not designate a "higher grade of optical glass". APO is short for apochromat which is a three-lens configuration at the main objective end to control light spread and chromatic aberration. This was very poorly explained in this video. Most sub-£300 spotting scopes forego a three-lens (apo) config in favour of an achromat (two lenses) where the addition of ED glass is much more critical to reduce chromatic aberration (CA). An APO is a very good way to reduce CA without having ED glass and is usually only found in spotting scopes £800+ although Helios do offer a 90mm APO spotting scope for around £200.
