This is Mike. This is my channel name. I was worried about the mud when I came out tonight. So, I parked in the road and walked all that wood to the truck. I would be furious if someone tore up my front yard. Man, it's burning great!!!!
Oh hey! Thanks for coming out. Yesterday and today really helped dry things up. It’s still really soft but getting better! Rain tomorrow and Wednesday, you know what that means. Glad it’s burning as advertised!
Hi Mike. I know that no one wants to spend money. However the area that you want to have your splitters set up , I would put down rock to give you an island to work on. The mulch thing works for a while but always gets thicker and holds water. Mulch works well to keep dirt from getting on to logs and rounds. Being your in prime farmland, that soil is going to retain moisture. If your soil was sandy soil, you could probably get away with mulch. Once the rock gets packed you pretty much have as close to concrete as you can get. Later buddy.
Quite a learning curve with nasty wood you have on your hands. Gotta wonder if the hassle would be better to chunk it into boiler wood. Tough call! Thanks for sharing Mike.👍🪵
I use wood chips a lot in my woodyard. They work great for keeping wood outa the mud & dirt, I also use them where I store totes full of wood to keep the weeds/grass from growing all around and into the totes. But, they hold moisture and are not good for driving over. When driving on chips when it’s muddy, you’ll end pushing a big of them with your front tires unless you’re in 4WD. Hope that helps. Enjoyed it!!
Morning, Mike. On the wood chip idea, thinking you would have to pile them thick if driving the tractor across them. That might be better than pure mud in the monsoon season. On the other hand, it might take forever to dry out once wet and smooshed into the ground, holding moisture. I know, not any help at all! You sure get your paces in walking around the log lift.
Best advice for mud season. Either take a few weeks off or just deal with the mud because chips will make mud season next year worse. 3in breaker run would be best if your going to put anything down.
Mike - don’t put chips on any area you will be driving on. It will just make your mud problem worse over time. I know from experience! Either deal with the mud or put down some stone.
Hello Mr. KNL, That has to be some of the nastyisy toughest wood I have ever seen split, I would have tossed a big p[ile, let it dry for a year then light it up, that is a lot of work, and you just kept on going like a Champ,
Chips please!! I am all about putting chips down in between my stacked rows of firewood. It would keep down on the mud and rain from splashing mud on the wood! I have called and texted a tree service 3 times and still no chips🤣🤷♂️ That maple can be a twisted mess!! You got a pretty good start on your face cord challenge. I think you will make it Mike👍🏻👍🏻
You are a patient man Mike, I think i would have placed them nasty rounds on the burn pile! Because this stuff won’t split its self…🤷♂️ I’m getting excited for HFH 24👍👍
At the rate it is taking to split that curly maple with either the box wedge or tall 4 way and extra steps , walk arounds and wood slash I do believe the axis is the way to go. I haven't found anything my axis won't split. Certainly advantages and weaknesses to both as well as personal preference but man I was worn out just watching that, stay safe.
Mike look 👀 over your shoulder, my 6 cycle Cummins homemade processor clean it easy in one ☝️ day . My guys do easy 5 semi load a day = little over 100 full cords . Not them little face cords . Probably you should see my yellow birch bigger them 24D . 😊 I’m just a little guy into firewood 🪵 for sure . Some off my hardwood tree easy over 3 full cords in one ☝️ trees. Limbed run 8” 24” rounds for 15’ to 26’ long off a tree. 😊
Mike box or pizza wedge are make for straight grade logs 🪵. Mike in the woodyard you got to read firewood 🪵 for the right cutting wedge to make the right firewood 🪵 plus increase your speed around a wood 🪵 yard . Remember got to have firewood 🪵 to SALE firewood 🪵 like having Benjamin in the bank .
Hey Leonard! I was JUST thinking about that today. That box wedge is kind of like a processor. There is a particular size of round, and grade of round it likes. Once you find those then Bob’s you Uncle. Otherwise it’s a pretty big fight. I’ll have to just sort out the box wedge rounds and let the Axis split everything else!
If you lay in chips you will make back mess and what you already have, as the chips hold moisture and a breakdown with a constant running over with the tractor.. If you take notice of construction sites they will take out the sloppy missing material then back fill with Hard Rock to give you a base to work off. You use chips and you will a mess than you now.
I don’t have a sawmill and don’t have any interest in doing that. I also have little desire and no space to stack and sticker boards to sell a year from now when they might be dry enough to sell. I had 20 +/- really nice walnut logs about a year ago. EVERYbody said, “find a sawmill and sell them”. I had one guy drive 2 hours one way and offered me exactly zero dollars for them. And another guy offer me $0.45 per board foot. While I don’t disagree, there is beautiful lumber hidden inside, I can’t seem to find anyone that wants to pay for them. So I’ll make firewood…
Hello Mike, hey is wood chips cheaper than gravel? You were splitting some nasty maple. Got signed up for the firewood hysteria. hope to run your Axis and 24D I’m bring my chainsaws. Let’s have a great time cutting and splitting firewood! For a great cause.
