The TOUR OF CHESHIRE 2024 old cars in action

Two years ago we video'd the Tour Of Cheshire historic car rally, and in 2024 we were keen to repeat the experience. We heard through the grapevine the date for this year's event, and decided to focus on the Oulton Park rally stages (four runs in all for each car) as there are plenty of spectator opportunities around the venue.
The always slippery surface of the purpose-built rally course at Oulton is a real test for any car and driver, young or old, and the increasing rain as the morning progressed only made things more tricky - for drivers, and also for ourselves trying to keep our cameras dry(ish). Only a good going over with a hair dryer once back home revived one of our cameras which had ingested more water than was good for it.
Classic rally cars are always fun to watch, so many of the cars have very distinctive sounds too - for example the Datsun 280Z with its wonderful straight six engine (similar sound tracks for the Triumph 2000, TR6, 280SL, and MGC).
Other highlights for the 2024 Tour of Cheshire included a superb Ford Model A, a Triumph TR3A with no weather equipment in place, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and Alfetta saloon, Ford Cortina GT Mk1, various Escorts and Minis, Austin A40 Mk2, Volvo Amazons, Porsche 911, Talbot Samba, plus hot hatches from VW and Peugeot, to name just a few. Even though the weather was appalling at times, we managed to grab some footage so hopefully this one will be of interest to classic car fans.

High marks, Richard! I appreciate your braving the elements to get some great action video. also, luckily the hail was pea sized. I'm still driving my old (2005) Honda Accord with hail damage from many years ago. The hail was golfball size and I was caught with no cover on the road. Now the Honda looks like a golf ball - all dimpilley.

Wonderful action shots, Richard. Here, in Australia, we don't get enough rain, but this video makes it look like rain can make things quite miserable in Britain. Perhaps we have the best of it. In 20 years of racing, I think I only competed twice on a wet track. Thanks again for your great videos.

@@oldclassiccarUK What can I say? I've got a soft spot for my Minis. Dad had half a dozen of them from the 60s to the 80s. One of the registration numbers (AFW 1K) is now on a Land Rover. I remember it for Appleby Frodingham [Steel]Works - which is where Dad worked at the time in Scunthorpe! 😁👍

Interesting (and predictable) to see how much more stable the FWD's were. Having said that, the grey A40 went remarkably well, perhaps due a skillful driver not too heavy on the accelerator. I share your enthusiasm for the Datsun 280Z - always a favourite of mine, especially in that super yellow!

As usual a great video you say they are stages but they are in actual fact tests which are timed to the second and can be great fun as you can see A long time since I have seen an A40 spin! You ask what car would you choose that might be difficult. Unfortunately you don't see many Vauxhalls used my favourite cars, yes my doctor said he thinks I should up my medication! The reason for my statement is that my first car was an HA Viva which I used in the Southeastern Rally Championship The London Counties Road Rally Championship and The Motoring News Championship and its just been restored and looks immaculate .very little rust ,hard work must have suited it.I then moved to a Chevette 1256cc I was never a huge fan of the 2300cc engine.I bought the internals out of HRO 885N a Vauxhall development car driven by Will Sparrow and Gery Marshall pre HS days I was told the pistons were Ford and had free floating gudgeon pins not sure I knew exactly what that was, however with it balanced and lightened mated to a Blydenstien head a Quaffe straight cut gearbox.it sounded like the to Escorts on the TOC it revved quite happily to 8000RPM and would do about 70mph in second gear l never thought about it blowing up and driven properly on the road it gave about 40mpg that would be good today I remember an old friend of mine Ian Collins an Avenger fan saying thrers a man who enjoys his motor sport when we nearly caught Will Gollop on one of the stages of the Tour of Manston. With this car I managed to win one of the ASEMC championships Plenty of money ,unfortunately not ,plenty of skill ,I would like to think a little bit .Luck and a good car definitely and that is why Would like to see Vauxhalls used!

Hi. I haven't commented on your channel for awhile. I've had issues with my phone so I had it in for repair. Thought I'd check you out. The old Hillman Imp cracked me up. What a hoot watching it motoring at high speed and then spinning out. I remember back in the 1960s seeing them on the road a funny type of car. I like the Alfasud , such a good car design for an old model.

Nice to see these old car being put through their paces including an A40, some more successfully than others may I add, on what is a very naughty track indeed. I know of someone who owns a rather forlorn looking A40 that is lying in a garage somewhere that needs some TLC, no names mentioned of course RJ.

Great video, as always, but missed your dulcet tones explaining which car is which and a brief history of them. I was watching and waiting for you to put me out of misery as the name and model of the car was either unsure to me or on the tip of my tongue but couldn't remember. Other than that tiny gripe I thought it was brill. Thanks.

Fair enough, although I had to direct the camera's mic in one direction and I thought most people would like to hear the engines rather than me wittering away (although I do do that in the parking area). Thanks for watching!

Yes the FWD certainly seemed more planted, I think a 205 GTi won overall
