Pelphia is a horrible place where everyone is terrible. I'm so excited about what was set up in the last 100 pages of Hod King. Great reviews! Also Edith is AMAZING.
Voleta is definitely a manic pixie dream girl but it was super fun to see her tell off all those people. This was a great video and a great review! Edith is also definitely my favorite character too!
-Character study ✅ -Social commentary ✅ -Super unique setting ✅ Yeah this just confirmed how excited I've been to get to this. Also the covers are fantastic. Little concerned with the frustration of progress in book 3, that's something that can really make a book a slog for me, but I think I can power through 🤓 Nice review Rid, you're great.
Thanks for watching Jimmy!! Yeah, I think book 3 is definitely still readable, it just might not clip along like the previous 2 books. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it hehe
Book 3 is a bit different than the first two, mostly in terms of structure. I personally didn’t have any problem with the events, but I think it’s the last bit of setup we’ll have before the last book. I’ve got this feeling the last book will be a huge roller coaster. The whole series is absolutely worth the read!!
Great review! very helpful breakdown of what kinds of things to expect in each book and overall themes. This is the type of thing I wouldn't hesitate to pick up if it were a standalone but the fact that its 4 books of strangeness intimidates me lol. I'll definitely keep it on my radar since so many people are raving about it and I bet this is something that would make for a very interesting spoiler discussion.
You've convinced me! I'll give the series another try. I loved the world, but Senlin's perspective in book 1 bored me, so hearing it diverges from him is encouraging.
I don't know if I agree with the characterization of Voleta as a manic pixie dream girl. I mean, is she manic? Yes. Is she a pixie? Yes. Is she a dream girl? I suppose so. But the trope of MPDG involves a character whose agency and identity is typically subsumed into being a dramatic tool for the growth of the protagonist. And in this series, Voleta if anything avoids interaction with Senlin. She has her own ambitions and character arc. I agree that her behavior is a bit one-note and juvenile. But she's also the youngest member of the troupe and her immaturity stands out in contrast to that of the other characters. I enjoyed her section of the story and thought the Hod King was the best book of the three.
I really love this series, loved the first book right away and then the next books turned out to be even better imo. I plan on reading them for the third time before the Fall of Babel. O, and Byron ❤
