Absolute blast driving this very cool gem of a Toyota. The MR2 Spyder was at the end of an era for toyota's historic name plate. But it definitely wasn't a let down!

I thrash this car all the time and still get 29mpg with 87 gas. Amazing car!!!

Got one recently. I think of it as a modern day Porsche 914. Small, light, mid engined and fun.

Had my 2001 for 8 yrs. Great car, original motor died at 200000 miles do to precats, I beleive. Was able to buy and have installed another 1zz motor for a total of 1500. Gutted the precats and I have a new car. Try that with a boxster!

Just bought one 3 months ago. You are absolutely right. But I have a double pipe exhaust from TTE which adds al little more bass sound to the motor :-)

Can't say I would recommend as a first car. Definitely something to have as a fun 2nd car in the collection. Although it's quite fun to drive, it is still pretty loud and cramped for any normal sized adult. Great car as a toy. But not as your only car.

I like this version of the MR2. I wouldn't call them reliable though. Those pre-cats like to break up into little pieces and get sucked back into the engine and cause severe engine oil burning and ultimately failure. That's why you don't see them much any more.

Easy fix (outside the US). Either gut the precats or put a nice shiny new manifold on.

@@davepayne164 You can do that in the US too. Problem is if it hasn't been done already after 20 years there will be damage. If you were looking to buy one I would pop that trunk and see if they had did it already. I've looked at several over the years to buy and most had it done
