The Pipistrel Virus truly is a true form of performance and efficiency. Being one of Pipistrel’s earliest model, this line of aircraft have now developed into a true modern day speed machine.
The Virus is built off of the Pipistrel Sinus. They have practically the same design/airframe and fuselage. Also share the same cabin space. The main difference comes in the size of the engine and the performance of the aircraft.
The Virus unlike its predecessor uses the standard 100 HP Rotax engine. This boosts the performance of the aircraft to cruise over 140 knots, 147 knots to be exact. All while burning only 5 gallons of fuel per hour. This aircraft can average up to 50 mpg. This makes it one of the most efficient single engine aircraft ever built. And because the performance is beyond 120 kts, this puts the aircraft in the experimental category.
Pipistrel Virus Specs
Engine - Rotax 100 HP
Range - 680 NM
Cruise Speed - 121 knots
Fuel burn - 2.5 GPH

Real world numbers are more like 120-130 kts on a typical day on 5 usg. The wing tips usually curve down on high wing aircraft and up on low wing. Aerodynamically its not a big difference, the idea is to reduce wing tip vortices and thus drag. The ailerons and flaps are combined into... flaperons. On the top of the wing are the air brakes/ spoilers. You could not see them, they were retracted. Baggage is 25 kg around 55 lbs. And yes, I fly Virus and Alpha Trainer.

Pipistrel is Italian for bat, and the reason for this name is that when it was established in 1989 (although its already informally established a few years earlier) , there are legal restrictions imposed by then-Yugoslavian government. Due to these restrictions, the company's first aircraft, essentially powered hang gliders, flew in the hours between dusk and dark. This, together with the triangular shape of the hang gliders style wing gave those initial planes the nickname "bats" among enthusiasts and locals, which was adopted by the company, naming themselves after the Italian word for bat. Last April, the company was acquired by Textron Aviation, as it will be the core brand of its eAviation division.

Dylan Baxter I heard the same thing about Nova in school, but I learned recently that the Nova story is an urban legend - the Nova sold quite well in Spanish speaking countries. The word means the same in Spanish as in English - all in the pronunciation. Kind of like “notable furniture” in English, we wouldn’t think this means “no table furniture” because of how it’s said.

Mike, Nice to see you covering this plane. I think it is an amazing aircraft with incredible performance and high build quality. It’s a shame that our FAA has stuck it in the Experimental “penalty box”. Maybe one day we’ll catch up to the Europeans. We used to be the world leaders but bureaucracy has killed that. Keep up the good work!!
@aleksandrnestrato
@aleksandrnestrato 5 лет назад
Not bureaucracy. It's odd outdated traditions and fear from all the participants of GA (pilot-owners, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, regulators) to try new stuff. Just look at Lycoming & Comtinental engines - they are old as shit! The design goes back to 1930s-1940s. Rotax is way more advanced, economic and reliable. But unfortunately they don't build 6-cylinder powerful engines. Nor 4-cylinder powerful engines. I thing somebody in USA "insistently asked" Rotax (or the BRP) NOT to built such engines. Americans understand this and now and then try to install modern car engines on their planes, thus going experimental only. However, modern, say, Ford V6 3.5 Biturbo from F-150 Raptor is a very yammy spice on an airplane! Powerful, electronically controlled, lightweight, liquid cooled, economical... Americans try to save money by retaining old familiar technologies. Europeans have less money and substantially higher prices on fuel, so they try to save money by going into new design decisions. For instance Dimond DA-42 and DA-62. Both have Austro engines, which in fact are modernized Mercedes-Benz 2.0 liter in line four turbo diesel engines. One hole cylinder block, liquid cooling, electronic control, always turbo, of course fuel injected and!.. They use the jet fuel which is cheaper than the avgas.
@designexplainedllc346
@designexplainedllc346 2 года назад
@@aleksandrnestrato It's not outdated traditions or bureaucracy, it's the shitty nature of families of a couple idiots who died in aircrafts to start suing the manufacturer. A new Cessna 170 when they came out in the 1950's adjusted for inflation in 2021 only costs about $87,000. In the 70's and 80's, some idiots started dying and their families filed lawsuits that crippled the aviation manufacturers like Cessna who did not have large reserves due to private aviation at the time being a low margin industry. Those families also petitioned the FAA to heavily regulate private aviation to the point where most of the cost of a private aviation plane is now just testing of parts for FAA certification, and added buffer margin to protect companies from going under due to litigation. Cost of materials and assembly of a plane does not cost much at all. Honestly, just buy a reputable experimental plane kit, like those from Van's and register it as a amateur homemade plane by assembling it yourself so you can get around all the BS regulations. If you can't do it yourself, just find a experienced auto motive welder and a good auto mechanic to assemble it for you, not that hard to have a good reliable new plane with modern avionics nowadays for the same price as in the 1950's when adjusted for inflation. Might be a good idea to do it before the FAA closes this loophole for good in the future.

I just learned of the private pilot glider rating with no medical. You can get the full rating and this allows you to fly the sinus to 17999 feet as long as you don't get the light sport add on. That is worth it to me just to have the ability to fly above 10000 ft as a light sport pilot. I am heading down to Florida in September 2020 to get my rating, even though I do have the light sport certification. 10 hours and 20 flights. Pass the FAA private pilot glider written exam, checkride( oral amd practical) with examiner and your done.

This isn't the Toyota Prius of the sky, although it can achieve 33.8 MPG if converting knots to MPG. The Sinus Flex would be the more appropriate Prius comparison, due to its multi wing configuration ability (Motor glider & cross country machine). The end of the wing has a winglet, allowing for a slightly longer lift surface, and the flaperons (both flaps & aerilons) along the wings trailing edge and the integrated air brake was the break in the upper wing surface which was demonstrated when you flew with Rand Vollmer. A few minutes of prep would've paid off I think. Just saying- no meanness intended!

They don’t cruise at 147 knots. I own one, have owned two of them and have known many with this aircraft. The most I have ever seen come out of a virus sw is 135knots true airspeed, not indicated. Max indicated is more like 115-120knots at 75% throttle. I have no idea how pipistrel came up with this stat as no one gets it. The trike version gets even worse then the tailwheel so I’m guessing this one gets around 115knots indicated 125 true. Good review of the virus, you just followed what pipistrel states, but sadly it isn’t true. Also Pipistrel changed the cowl now so on new aircraft ordered today you have even less forward speed due to higher drag from the cowl. They increase size and openings for better 912iS engine cooling. But it is an incredible plane despite the speed lies

I honestly think the FAA should expand the part 103. Really, it shouldn't cost 10,000 + to get into these types of planes. Really. 5galons of fuel limit. Come on. No body said no training but that could be done at the manufacturer or dealer. The problem is that aviation is closed to most of the middle class because of money and time, the very people who would be better at flying because they have mechanical knowledge. The rich just buy their way in. The ultralight class is way to restricted. So much safety could be incorporated to these planes but then you would exceed the stupidly low weight limit. I know pilot are not going to like what I just said but it is true. The FAA demand way to much. Now a beechcraft g36, yeah, maybe you need to get a license. As far as commercial, that is a different story.

Emotionally I detest the Toyota Prius... I am a Physicist and put up with 'Sheldons' with their damn Prius-i (Plural), including my brother-in-law. Next vid, compare the Virus to a Kestrel or a BMW, anything but a Puke-Prius. That said, your videos have convinced me to consider buying a Pipistrel.

I am a helicopter pilot. I know any aircraft above 200 knots considers high performance, but switching from rotor blade to fix wing, 170 vs 100mph is not that impressive.

Will you get covid if you fly this plane? I doubt it as covid is a scam.
