In this video essay, we explore the tragic fall of Arthas Menethil, one of Warcraft's most iconic characters.
Starting as a noble prince, Arthas' journey takes him through multiple archetypes, from the classical hero to the dark, corrupted villain. We discuss key moments from Warcraft III and Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, analyzing how Arthas' choices, driven by vengeance and self-doubt, transform him from a protector of his people into one of Azeroth's most feared antagonists.
Join us as we unravel the complex layers of Arthas' character and his descent into darkness, raising the question: can a hero's path truly lead to villainy?

14:40 small note: He doesn't blame the scourge, he blames the mercenaries he hired to destroy the ships.

Incredible video, I love how you illustrated Arthas’ journey using literary archetypes, it helps support that initial point you made about writing in video games being just as artful and important as in other media

Thanks! I really think video games can be just as powerful, if not more powerful, than other forms of media. It really is a powerful art form, and Arthas's journey is a powerful one, and the fact that fans are still so invested in his character after all this time just goes to show it

"We don't talk about Shadowlands!" No joke. That was the worst thing they could have done with Arthas. So disappointing.

It was such a bait & switch, preying on players' desire to see his character again. Anything would have been better than that.

Is Walter White an anti-hero? He flat out felt like a villain to me, but I stopped watching after about 1 season (specifically _because_ it just felt like he was a villain). Anti-hero to me is more morally grey, like Dexter (which I also didn't watch terribly long, but at least he did both good and bad; I don't remember White doing meaningful good in the first season?). Honestly Arthas has always been questionable to me for a similar reason: he's basically just _The Worst Paladin Ever._ Reckless, prideful, and does horrible things without good reason. Perhaps later books backfilled his story arc, but with Warcraft 3 there just weren't clear motivations -- he was just an impetuous, terrible paladin. Really it's the culling of Stratholme more than anything that illustrates that point, since he makes no attempt to separate those who might be untainted, he just kills everyone.

Walter White does start out as an anti-hero and very sympathetic character, doing what he does to provide for his family once he's gone, but he VERY quickly becomes the Villain because deep down he's not a very nice person. I used him to demonstrate anti-heros in modern TV because a lot of people consider him an anti-hero. Arthas is in a different position. I used Christie Goldens Rise of the Lich King novel as it retraces the events of Warcraft 3 and fleshes out Arthas a lot. I'd recommend it. It's a good read. Deep down, Arthas is a nice person. He wants to do right by his people and be a good paladin and good leader. He is somewhat rebellious and confident in his power, but he has entirely good intentions and, by all accounts, is a well loved and respected paladin and prince. Arthas's desire to protect his people at any cost, to an obsessive degree, is what motivates him to do what he does. He shifts from being clearly good, to morally-grey with his actions that are questionable but are motivated by the desire to protect his his people, before turning to be truly evil when he takes up Frostmourne and fully submits to the Lich Kings will. Stratholme can be debated either way, plagued grain has been distrubuted through the city, you don't know how long you have until people turn, how many people have been infected, if you can even tell before they turn, or if you have enough time for reinforcements or those with the skills to quickly test people to arrive and help. Stratholme is Warcrafts trolley problem. Do you cull Stratholme to prevent the deaths of many, many more when the plague spreads further?

@@FuthorcGaming I guess maybe if more groundwork had been laid showing Stratholme's undead situation was somehow unavoidable and definitely going to infect 99% or more of the town? With a lot of scenarios like that, the writers do a good job of showing that in the particular context, the action was reasonable (and sometimes they go as far as actually showing the further harm was avoided by taking the brutal measure). I don't remember that being true of Warcraft 3's Stratholme storyline, but admittedly it's been a while since I played the War3 campaign. I just remember thinking he was an absolutely horrible person -- and I thought that as someone who often sees the rational "algebra" to harsh 'greater good' decisions like that. They could've played that plot point as him trying to save whoever he could, but genuinely being too late to save a single person. Or they could've shown some island nation where one single town being infected resulted in an unstoppable spread that swarmed the entire army, despite that nation having a strong military for its size. There are quite a few ways they could've done that story better. But instead he just very quickly decides to raze the town and lock people in, almost certainly killing uninfected people who didn't deserve it. Basically they could've stepped into it a lot better than they did.

Shadowlands could have been redeemable it not for what they did to Arthas.
