A minor correction. The TV serial you mentioned was in fact 'Ramayana' and not Mahabharat. Mahabharat was also a TV serial but that belonged to Krishna and not to Ram.
There were a lot of slip ups. As a matter of fact, Chandra Gupt Maurya and Ashoka ruled an unified India and their empire was as large as Akbar and Aurangzeb. I know India, their tradition is very old and is based on solid religious, cultural values. I live in india and i saw that the temple event was promoted to a massive level. I live in a hostel and 13 yr OLD kids were shouting ram ram ram celebrating this "new era" the across the roads, in the supermalls in the marketplaces everywhere people were bursting crackers shouting ram ram, people even fixed their marriages on that day. My family was very uncomfortable driving back home that day....

Btw small correction the mahabharata is not a story of Ram, it's a story of a fight between two group of cousins the pandavas and kauravas about their kingdom. Although Krishna plays a role Ram is not mentioned in the story.

I remember reading a research paper that analyzed the conflict of the partition of Bengal in 1905. The author who was a Hindu said Islam was quickly embraced by the lower cast who mostly resided in East Bengal(now Bangladesh). The reason was because of the tough system the lower cast had to follow. Embracing Islam meant they no longer had to follow these difficult rules of the caste system. Yet many Muslim Bengalis do not know this themselves and entertain the idea that Islam spread through invasion. In Bangladesh, Islam spread through the Sufis thanks to the Arab traders who were already traveling to Bengal long before the Mughals even touched Pakistan.

The masjid was built after the babar, and named on behalf of Babar. The structure is built on top of the temple, archaeologists found remains of the temple below.
