The Tragic And Incredible Life Of The Last Stuart Monarch | Queen Anne of Great Britain - PART 1

Queen Anne has been mostly pushed to one side in history, seen as a weak woman overwhelmed by tragedy and manipulated by her favourites. But the truth is Queen Anne was a stubborn, strong woman who bore the loss of her many children and husband with dignity, and sought to find the balance between her own opinion, and the right thing to do. This video looks at the early part of her life, from becoming Princess of Denmark, to her involvement in the beginning of the Glorious Revolution...

I must admit, though she is far from my favourite English monarch, I do feel for her. Losing 18 children! I can’t even begin to imagine the pain…

She certainly had a lot of tragedy piled on during her life - she also had a few debilitating illnesses that can't have helped. And she certainly doesn't seem to be the favourite monarch of many people, but perhaps I can hopefully swing people around to liking her more!
@lfgifu296

@@HistorysForgottenPeople I don’t disliked her, though! She’s not here nor there, for me, but no ill feelings lol. I just feel for her father- though I dislike him more than her, as he could have been catholic but not demand for his people to be so, as he likely planned to do-. But still, her refusal to attend the birth of lil James strongly suggests she did think he was legitimate- also, a *baby* smuggled in a *warming pan* ?? Seriously? Poor guy would have been smashed.

@Ælfgifu Haha, I honestly thought if anyone really believed that rumour, they will believe anything! 😅 That or they had really big bedpans at the palace! I know what you mean about Mary being a bit of a 'meh' monarch though, she's surprisingly unknown as a person, and I think that often gives the impression she didn't do very much. At a guess, I suppose that idea served the new Hanoverian dynasty after her death in establishing them as rulers that changed things.

@@moraesneto9508 you must’ve never lost a child, let alone 18. The fact that she betrayed her father doesn’t justify her immense loss. Besides, the tragedies started before James II even came to the throne.

It really is heartbreaking to know how many children she lost. It must have been difficult to not only live through that, but then to bear the grief of losing her one remaining child, while holding it together in order to rule the country. I always think Anne does not get enough credit for her reign.

That beautiful lady went thru pure hell. I cried when I learned of her life and all she had to endure and still run a country. My heart goes out to her, and I will keep her in my heart now, as I do Queen Elizabeth the 1st. These ladies/Queens were so strong when women back then wasn't suppose to be.

15:40 that was so fun lol😭 No, I don’t think she was a lesbian, thought maybe she could have been bisexual, who knows? Her love for George was beautiful and genuine, and she clearly like him between the sheets, but her obsession for Sarah may well, as you say, be a crush, or maybe something else…?
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople Год назад
Dr Johnson just looks so curious, I had to use him! 🤣 And yes - nothing can ever be ruled out when it's been a few hundred years, of course. But the evidence does point to her probably not being romantically linked with Sarah (or later, Abigail Masham). But I definitely think she was somewhat in awe of Sarah, and it could have been a crush, or even just a replacement for the later coldness of her sister?
@lfgifu296
@lfgifu296 Год назад
@@HistorysForgottenPeopleWho knows… I’m (almost, as you can never be totally) sure she wasn’t a lesbian, given her relationship (both sexual and romantic) with her husband, but I do recognise a crush in her obsession with Sarah, having myself had that before (though I always suppressed and controlled it for fear of annoying the poor woman lol)

While Anne isn’t my favourite monarch due to her bringing in the Act of Union, this was a fantastic video. Your hard work is well appreciated by this Aussie. BTW could you also do a video on Mary II as she (& her husband too for that matter) is largely forgotten. Wouldn’t mind learning more about her myself.

Although it's not directly about Mary II and William, there's a lot more about them and their reign in England in the next part, so that might cover a bit of it! 😊

I agree, and I'll definitely be revisiting not just Mary, but a lot of other interesting people from around this period as well. Anne's videos didn't do as well as I hoped at the time, so sometimes I do something else for a while (Wars of the Roses/Tudors at the moment), but I promise I'm coming back to it. 😊

One source suggested Queen Anne had lupus. James’ wives also lost several children so you wonder what were the causes.
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople Год назад
There was certainly something genetic, I think. Queen Mary (her sister), also had miscarriages, although not as many. Part of the doubts around James Francis were purely based on the large gap of time between his parents' marriage and when he was actually born, after again, his mother suffered miscarriages!

Now, for the question, seeing her here reminded me of it: what do you think of Henrietta Maria?
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople Год назад
Okay, I'm going to start by saying researching Anne made me realise I really don't know as much about Henrietta Maria as perhaps I ought to! From what I know of her, I don't actually dislike her, but I also think she was a bit flitty as a person. For example, I do really admire her religious convictions, as it can't have been easy being openly Catholic in a country full of people who openly hated them. But equally, she didn't help with the royal expenses by spending large amounts on dresses and personal buildings. Like so many queens before and after, she did of course have an image to upkeep, but apparently it went far beyond this, even when Charles tried to help things by giving her gifts. I also think it must have been tough for Henrietta being thrust into a country with not only a different main religion, but a language that she didn't know, as I put the responsibility for that squarely on her parents' shoulders. Apparently, she never learned English (writing or speaking) to any great degree, and that probably made people dislike her more. Overall, I don't really dislike Henrietta Maria, but I can't say I like her much, either!
