Maybe he was an Autobot that got a hold of some dark energon and wanted to use it to help him power up. The dark energon would have corrupted his mind, body and spark (hence the eye-color change).
i think the cross over the autobot insignia doesn't show that he used to be an autobot, but instead i think it shows that he has a hatred for the autobots
it could be both, he could have been an autobot very early in the war, like the first few years and he could have had a violent problematic autobot and then he chose to switch sides since insignias cannot be changed so he probably chose to put a cross through his old insignia to show he hated the autobots because when he was a part of their number they kept reprimanding him for his violence whereas Megatron was very encouraging of his brutality and violence, and so Berserker joined the Dreads who were a ragtag group of Decepticons as violent as he was then he simply altered his appearance to fit in, and this could have happened all in the start of the war
he could have been an autobot at the start of the war but switched sides as the autobots probably reprimanded him for his violent acts then he chose to reformat his robot mode to fit in with the other dreads and simply renamed himself Berserker. the cross through his old autobot insignia is probably a fuckyou to the autobots who see him in battle knowing that they were fighting a traitor
Human blood is only red when it's wet. When it dries it turns brown. So unless Berserker JUST killed a human and bathed in its blood prior to EVERY SCENE he appeared in... it's paint

I take continuity from Bumblebee and a soft rewrite of Rise of the Beasts. 1987: Bumblebee and the other Autobots land on Earth, taking refuge in the forest near Brighton Falls. 1988: The Autobots are spread across the world. Optimus and a team consisting of Bumblebee, Arcee, Mirage and Wheeljack live in New York for the next 7 years. 1994: The Autobots stationed in New York encounter the Terrorcons, servants of Unicron. After allying themselves with the Maximals, the Autobots successfully defend Earth and prevent its destruction at the hands of Unicron. The Predacons escape a stasis prison in the fight. 1995: The Decepticon leader Megatron lands on Earth with a large army and attempts to mine raw Energon in Africa. The Autobots track the Decepticon base down and destroy it, saving Earth from Megatron’s wrath. 1996: Unicron attempts one last attack on Earth. The Decepticons and Predacons form an alliance to battle the Autobots and Maximals and successfully strand Optimus Prime and his team on a dying Cybertron. After repairing the local Space Bridge, the Autobots subdue the Decepticons and Predacons and prevent Unicron from consuming Earth at the cost of draining the life from Cybertron. Unicron is banished to the Dead Universe. The Maximals and Predacons make peace and travel to a distant galaxy at the edge of the known universe. Megatron and the Decepticons onboard the Nemesis are frozen in stasis by the Autobots in Sector 7’s headquarters. couldn't work though i think the movie depiction of megatron is way too evil for the sake of evil whereas in the cartoons especially the g1 comics megatron and Optimus prime had the same goals just different methods that led them to fight but in the very end they formed an alliance to destroy Unicron which then leads a functioning alliance and peace between the Autobots and Decepticons and Megatron relinquished his leadership of the Decepticons as a result. Megatron was evil but his intentions were somewhat good he just did evil acts because he was willing to do what the Autobots refused to do. put it simply, Megatron wanted to restore Cybertron as did optimus both wanted the cybertronians to live in a free society that was unburdened by the old-guard who had Decepticons as slaves and gladiators fighting in the pits of Chaoc. the difference was that megatron was willing to hurt innocent lives to achive that goal to the point Optimus prime and the autobots had to get involved and fight the Decepticons. the only fully evil con was starscream who craved power and leadership and thought Megatron was too soft.
Berserker never got seen in his alt mode in the movie, so Hasbro chose to make easy repaints of crankcase into berserker but was too lazy to make new molds for the others In conclusion, hasbro is lazy and wants money

he probably was an autobot on cybertron but he probably a very problematic member, probably an autobot with violent tendencies then switched sides very early in the war and joined the dreads and changed his appearance to fit in prior to the desolation of cybertron, and he probably was a survivor of the battle of Chicago and probably was one of the dreads perusing bumblebee in the 3rd movie since one was injured and retreated which i assume was Berserker. it explains why he survived the battle and wasn't pulled into the unstable spacebridge when it started to collapse
its possible he had a different name and his tenure as an autobot could have been a short time on cybertron during the early days of the war and he could have simply switched sides as the war picked up since he could have been reprimanded for his violence which could have seeded hate for the autobot high command including Alpha Trion, Sentinal Prime and the young Orion Pax and other ranking autobots at the time. the moment he joined the dreads he could have added the cross through his old autobot insignia as a show of disrespect to his old comrades as the dreads were all a lot like him in terms of being violent Decepticons
Berserker lose to be a auto bot is like armada wheel jack with the x one his auto bot sign and armda wheel jack has a cut on his sign and i always wanted to see that in the movies where there a person who lose to be a auto bot and then join the decpocon
I just think he just really hates the autobots so instead of having a decepticon symbol he has an autobot symbol with an x marked over it showing that maybe all autobots need to be terminated or something like that idk
