Another reason that Travis was acting out more and more is because Sandra started keepimg him inside most of the time and he was not allowed to do much so he just ate a lot of junk food until he got extremely overweight. He was probably a bit depresed at that point. Sandra also got overprotective of him and would barely let him leave her side. All of this combined with a newly adult chimp that was raised as a pet by humans humans led to the outburst. Travis was also a victim here and this case is proof that primates should not be kept as pets. Not so fun fact: Travis' mother also had a public outburst with a few other chimps after they escaped the sanctuary and they were killed

You forgot to mention 2 very important reasons as to why Travis attacked Charla Nash in the first place. I'm a huge animal lover and I'll often preach for stricter laws on owning exotic "pets" especially endangered species because of situations like this and the whole Tiger King mess. Chimpanzees are known to be very dangerous and aggressive animals and she was warned about this as are many exotic animal owners but it doesn't seem to register until someone gets mauled. It breaks my heart to hear that a preventable situation like this happened at the cost the life of the animal and injuries to an innocent person all because of the owner's selfishness. I understand she was attached to him emotionally, but he shouldn't have been kept as a pet in the first place. Big cats are not cuddly kittens, and primates aren't puppies. Just because you want one, doesn't mean you should have one.

There absolutely needs to be stricter laws on exotic ""pets"". I genuinely don't know how people can delude themselves into thinking they can somehow domesticate a giant, wild, dangerous animal. Or how they're somehow surprised when this giant apex predator in their house mauls someone. They don't seem to realise that the reason dogs and cats are (for the most part) safe to have as a pet is that they have been domesticated over thousands of years and are now are hard wired to seek your approval and are extremely easy to train because of this. Even then, a poorly socialised dog can still easily kill someone - imagine what a giant wolf, tiger, leopard, chimp etc could do if you piss it off! I absolutely adore lions, they're my favourite animal ever, but it's _because_ I love them that I have enough respect for their power as an animal that I'd never try to get close to one, let alone let it in my house. There is absolutely _no_ reason to have a huge, wild animal in your home as a regular citizen. If you love an animal that much, you can work in a rescue, sanctuary or zoo, work in conservation to help protect their habitat, etc. there is literally no reason to bring one into your home other than to make yourself feel special. And that's not loving the animal, that's using it for your own amusement. And that's not even getting into the stress it puts on the animal to be in such an unsuitable and unrealistic environment, and how these exotic ""pets"" are 95% of the time morbidly obese because their diet is so unnatural, or how damaging it is to the ecosystem and wild population to be killing adults so you can steal the babies to sell as pets.

It's not mentioned in this video, but the cop that found her first was thinking he hoped that Charla was dead after seeing the extent of her injuries. As awful as that may sound, he didn't want to think someone would want to survive such a horrific attack, being left in such a state. While he was on the radio, he felt her stubby hand reach out to his leg. And that's how he knew she was alive. Such a horrific thing to endure. while this is certainly sandra's fault the most, i feel like everyone is ignoring the fact that local law enforcement knew fully well that she was illegally owning this animal and intentionally ignored it. the fact she did not have a permit would have been a perfectly acceptable reason to have travis taken away, yet instead sandra was enabled. no one stepped in until it was far too late. violent history or not, it's just a fact that wild animals are unpredictable and far too often uncontrollable. it is irresponsible for any human to own an animal like this. she blatantly should not have been allowed to have travis back edit: huh, didn't find out this had so many replies until recently, thnx youtube. grandfathering very much is a likely explanation and while i didn't bring it up at the time, i appreciate those who did. i am already aware of that possibility though. just, i feel like more could've been done to prevent this horrific attack. perhaps not as easily within the confines of law back then though. either way, it's still incredibly tragic and should have never happened.

She didn't listen. Gamer from Mars never mentioned that she was feeding Travis xanax regularly and having him drink wine with her. Charla wasn't some great friend. She was an employee. Charla Nash was always terrified of Travis. This woman had her own issues yes, but she ignored the many experts pleading with her to surrender Travis into the care of professionals. She humanised her stupid chimp too much and refused to take the warning signs like Travis running off, disobeying and causing problems in the past. Her choice is why Charla Nash was mutilated. @pizzlerot2730
@pizzlerot2730 Год назад
@@mfs96not really. Neutering, particularly for males, is effective at reducing levels of the hormones which can cause certain aggressive and territorial responses. The degree to which it is effective depends on a few things such as how early or late in life the procedure is performed; degree and effectiveness of behavioral training, particularly with regards to those undesirable behaviors; any genetic predisposition towards certain behaviors; and of course the actual husbandry of the animal, particularly its living and social conditions. At the end of the day, though, the main thing with neutering is that even though effectiveness at reducing negative behaviors varies, it *can* be extremely effective, and there's no real negative physiological trade-off (in fact neutering can actually drastically reduce predisposition to certain cancers in some animals, so the positives can go beyond the behavioral). The biggest reasons that people don't neuter are either cost or just some variation of "it's not natural," which is such an arbitrary cop-out. Domesticated and feral animals already aren't "natural" - we've twisted and warped their bodies and behavior over hundreds and thousands of generations, and created some undesirable effects along the way; so if neutering can help offset that with no negative trade-offs, then does it really matter if it's not "natural"? *Tl;dr* - neutering isn't a cure-all for behavior problems, but it can help a *lot* if you do it early and with training; it can also reduce or prevent other health problems like cancer, and there's literally no negative trade-offs (no, the animal doesn't miss them), so... *Please neuter your pets, folks!* 🙏

Its not "some animals", its "all animals". Most people fail to understand difference between domestication and habituation. A wild animal, even if taken in as a baby, will remain wild animal. Domestication takes hundreds of generations. So unless animal is fully domesticated, chance of attack will always remain high. What happened was not fault of a chimp, but yet another result of human ignorance and stupidity.

@Tommy Patton Actually according to science, house cats are only semi domesticated. They can learn to adapt and live with humans because they went through selective breeding for centuries but not long enough to get rid of their wild instincts. Cats, unlike dogs can actually live in the wild and hunt. Feral cats are basically wild domestic cat breeds that were born in the wild away from humans and hunt other animals to survive. We have some wild domestic cat breeds in our woods and they leave dead animal bones in our yard all the time. They are not safe to go near because if you get within 10 feet of them, they try to run at us and attack. I accidentally walked right next to a huge male Maine Coone cat and he jumped on my back and bit the back of my neck. I was able to throw it off, but it left huge claw marks on my shoulders and arms. I also had deep tooth marks on the base of my neck. I think that thing was trying to kill me. I had to get rabies shots because of that cat. We also saw the same cat carrying a dead fox in the woods behind our house. I think it got into a fight with the fox and killed it because the cat was also bleeding. Cats can be very formidable hunters and pretty dangerous too, especially if they are feral. Dogs are different because they don't retain their hunting instincts and are conditioned to seek human attention specifically. Dogs have been with us thousands of years longer than cats which is why they are so different. House cats are mainly considered safe to own as pets because of their small size. If they were the size of a big dog, cats would be large enough to kill humans and their unpredictable nature would make the too unsafe to be pets.

That chimp was *NOT* the monster in this story, the humans *WERE* You just don't do this. Travis was a wild animal. You don't own wild animals like chimps, tigers ect. because this, exactly this can and *DOES* happen. The best place for them is in the wild, in a zoo where they can be safe and not hunted, or on a nature reserve again not to be hunted. We've domesticated cats and dogs, but some animals just weren't made to be domesticated. Wild animals *DO* lash out more than the domesticated animals so if you decide to keep a wild animal as a pet and they lash out at you and disfigure you, rip off a limb or whatever that's on you for not realizing (or being to stupid) to realize "Oh hey, this animal might just hurt me, maybe I should adopt a cat or dog instead" So to shoot the chimp for doing what comes natural to them when they are in mating season and to keep one as a pet is just inhumane and cruel. If you do want an `exotic pet', get a snake or a spider or whatever. As long as it's not bigger than it's cage, and can't tear off your face then go for it. But if you do this, expect you to have something happen to you from the animal you have tried to domesticate. Anyone who does this in my opinion deserves to have their face ripped to shreds and limbs torn off. Stupid games win stupid rewards, and unfortunately the chimp had to suffer from a human's stupidity once again. Sandy should have been the one to have her face torn off.

Even with cats and dogs my family has always had a rule you never adopt an animal that is too big for you to physically control if you need to. Certain animals aren't as risky bc they're domesticated but in the end of the day they're still animals and can act surprisingly.

Ill be honest it seems pretty damn disrespectful to use that womans mauled face as a draw for clicks my guy. Any pictures would have done the same but you had to blow up THAT picture of her face that she hid away for years out of shame. Seems pretty exploitive. Edit: its already changed but my point stands. Primates just aren't meant to live among humans, especially since they could easily overpower us. My family's docile ball pythons should NOT be considered under the same umbrella by most people as a chimpanzee that can kill a human with one bad day. There needs to be far more restrictions on what can be classified as a pet, and more training/permits for those who for some reason, really want one.

What saddens me is that Travis is a victim in this too, you know. He was a wild animal, not somebody's replacement child. He should have been at a sanctuary with other chimps. Also he was given drugs so that was a major bad idea there. Still, none of this would have happened if they had let Travis be with his own kind.
