The thing that amazed me, reading the Narnia books as a child, was that this grownup actually got childhood RIGHT. Most adult authors simply don’t recall what being a child was like.
I call Bullshit. Most adults remember what being a kod was like, dumbass. Human life span isn't even that long and there is very lottle that actually separates an adult from a child, dumbass.
I am 73 and still reading The Chronicles of Narnia as well as his religious books which I love so much. He did get it right! He got childhood right and he got Christianity right! Brilliant and insightful man!
I must respectfully disagree. Christianity has so very little correct. I left it because of all its lies. Went back to my maternal grandmothers Hebrew religion. And even they are full of lies but at least I know the book says HE is coming to save them and anyone that would join with them. Anything beyond that is a lie. Respectfully.
@@serpentines6356 I think it was that he showed the way. It isn't ritual. It isn't words. It is how we behave, act, treat one another. My dad said that no matter what we believed we should have our own personal code that we live by. I have met people who didn't believe in God who's lives were an example of a personal code of caring for others and the world around them. I believe we are all brothers and sisters.
@@damogranheart5521 Everyone living by their "own personal code" creates chaos, and a breakdown of society. There needs to be a grounding of values to make society not fall apart. In our culture that is the Judeo- Christian tradition. Haven't you noticed the more our society becomes less religious, the crazier it's getting? Individuals can be"atheist" or whatever, but there needs to be an agreed upon value system that glues our society together.
I've studied theology all my life and have a degree in theology. Narnia has been one of those stories that goes so much deeper than what is on the page. He got childhood, he understood children. He was so immensely influential to my studies of theology. He grounded my studies and pulled it together for me in a most unique and personal way. I come back to Narnia often when times are confusing or difficult. And I come navy to Narnia because Lewis understands humanity. Lewis understands our relationship with God.
One of my fave authors of all time . My other fave author is Tolkien who was a close friend of Lewis and also a member of the inklings a literary group at Oxford
Gretchen that’s wonderful I was brought up as a Christian anyway I was brought up in an Irish catholic family so I’ve been keen to read his apologetics for a while now .
The Narnia Chronicles are a Theology treat, the sweetest one. It brought the truth of the Bible and the love of Christ to a pure child understanding. I will never be able to look at nature, snowy landscapes without being drown to Jesus, to Aslan, and all the things he taught the children on the books.
It is interesting that both JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis wrote books that later became popular Feature Films. Even today they are speaking to a Global Audience. 👍
The films were stripped of their inner core Especially The Lord Of The Rings CGI trumped its inner strength And don’t even start me on the Hobbit. I went to the last Tolkien exhibition in Oxford a couple of years ago and Christianity was visibly absent.
@@seanmoran6510 wow that is surprising given the two men were both Christian Lewis was church of Ireland a part of the Anglican communion and Tolkien was catholic so what you say is a bit strange given those facts .
C.S Lewis is so often over looked. A truly wonderful man not driven by money success or fame but by a true kind and loving heart going beyond his promises. He had such a moving stories and has gone through so many trials in his life. It is so inspiring that he kept his faith through the hard time. Narnia always has and will have a special place in my life. It gave me a understanding of faith that remains with me years after reading narnia. We need to make this man and his story more well known. # recognition for Jack. Truly one of my heros. Can not wait to meet him in heaven. Long live narnia and the story of c.s Lewis. Let's not forget a man who is almost forgotten. He inspires our generations and needs to be remembered for the hero he truley is.
Very well said one of my fave authors and I plan on getting into his apologetics books soon . He wrote these about ten years before the narnia series . They include the abolition of man , mere Christianity , the four loves and allegory of love . Surprised by joy ( about his faith journey ) and the problem of pain . I’d suggest starting with mere Christianity .
@@cherylmoss3632 Perhaps a better way to put it is that we wish that everyone would have the opportunity of reading his works. It certainly helps in the troubled times that we all face at one time or another.
K.L. Merrit, Charles Nesbitt, and Dorothy Sayers are often overlooked. C.S. Lewis is super popular among Christians. Every Christian I have ever met says "I love C.S. Lewis" and they have at least read "Mere Christianity", Narnia, and "The Screwtape Letters". They made Hollywood movies of some of the Narnia books recently. How is he "often overlooked"?
I'm not a religious person, maybe spiritual, I consider myself agnostic. But this is the type of religious person I totally respect and admire, a person whose life totally reflects his beliefs. Very beautiful documentary, very well done.
I’ve inched, step by small step, over the years to where I am today; comfortable enough in my faith to call myself a Christian. I’ll pray to my Lord Jesus that one day you might find the peace I’ve found in Him. Lewis helped me make the last leaps to Jesus.
the greatest news ever! ⬇️ In the very beginning of time God created all & it was good, His plan was to have Him & His creation live in utopia. the satan deceived God’s creation so that wouldn’t happen, we choose evil. Evil has its consequences, death & hell separation from God for eternity is the consequence for disobeying an everlasting God. God doesn’t want that for any of His creation so He sent His Son Jesus(God in the flesh) & Jesus lived the perfect life. Died the death as a criminal, & resurrected, all so that we could have eternal life if we have faith in His beautiful sacrifice. This is God’s plan!
In the States, Grandma used to come home from a visit to my aunt in Washington state, with pkgs of "Applets and Cotlets" apple and apricot gelled candies with nuts, and dusted with powdered sugar, which is what I understand to be very similar! Poor Edmund, now I understand! I must find a keto version of the recipe!
Karan wonderful that he did that for you . I had narnia read to me in childhood by a teacher when I was about nine but I also have read it as an adult and the Christian imagery becomes more powerful and easier to see then . And yes Turkish delight is yum 🤤 . My nieces have seen the movies but don’t think they’ve read the books .
Lewis changed my way of viewing the 🌎 and greatly strengthened my faith. I read his works on Christianity any time I struggle with something. Thank you for sharing this 😊

Dave, I, too, didn't read the Narnia books until and adult and a new Christian. I do recommend that you go back to the trilogy, which stands up to re-reading after re-reading.
@@cbwilson2398 there's another Wilson .. Read , Narnia by Lewis. Read distopia by Huxley. Understand Oz by Kennedy. The odds of the deaths of three men who worked together being natural deaths are 700 million to one.
First biographical work about Lewis I come across. I feel very impressed and satisfied after learning about this man. This video made me think about myself. I am now 62, and I feel I share many of Lewis's concerns. I wish I was as accomplished as he is. It was really an inspiring moment for me to watch this video. Thank you.
I loved the Narnia books in my childhood, when books were all I really had, and I read A Grief Observed as an adult after encountering more awfulness and loss in my life. It's not a book that holds your hand, but that's exactly why I needed it.
C.S. Lewis has always been my favorite writer and this only reinforces my love of his writing and ethics. My only critique of this is the music often overwhelms the words
He feels more like a kindred spirit to me than just a favorite author. I loved reading the Narnia series the most. They resonated with me like no other books, excepting maybe the works of Frank L Baum. This documentary was amazing. Thanks for bringing Jack to life for me.
I'm a 33yo brazilian. I bought the Narnia books from Amazon, waiting for them to arrive. Haven't read the books or watched the movies (just a few bits here and there), so I'm in for quite a jouney! It's nice to learn more about the author!
1962 Miss Betham Hillsview Avenue juniors. She was my teacher and introduced our class to The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe and we loved it. Always closing the book and leaving us on a cliffhanger to everyone's protest lol. Happy days. Thank u Miss Betham u were a brilliant teacher.
This was wonderful, it brought tears to my eyes as it reminds me of a time that is no longer. And his desire in him led him to God. I was upset to see 442 dislikes to this interesting video. Thank you so much.
My mother was older than most of my friend's mothers. That said, when the 'summer of love" came around and I was beginning to listen to the Beatles, she couldn't understand it. She was widowed at 53, left to raise me, apparently she found Mr. Lewis' Screwtape Letters and bought a copy for me to read. I loved it and thus began my love affair with Jack. I am a grandmother now with a 17 year old grandson who I thought perhaps could use some of Jack's wisdom so I bought him a copy. The jury is still out at the moment however!
I am so grateful for this upload that I don't care that sometimes the music is too loud nor that there are so many ads. I guess that's because I know there are so many others having worse difficulties than my petty complaints, as I am a conservative U.S. military mother, military veterans volunteer, have lost my entire family, rarely get to see my US Coast Guard son only child, and I am a born-again Christian and wanted to know of Mr. Lewis's bio first before I tackled MERE CHRISTIANITY. Thank you so very much!
I salute you! I guess many of us seem to be attracted to the same authors then. I was first introduced to CS Lewis by the late, great Ravi Zacharias or possibly as a small boy watching a part of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" on TV. My life was an oddity by any measure. Like Rudyard Kipling, I was partly raised overseas in Europe, British culture came barreling at me as a small boy and I found myself becoming a fan of British authors. My dad was military and suffered from PTSD so getting out of the various places I lived at and walking the family dog down that old belgian cobblestone road to the next town over was quite formative. I started writing as a teenager and finally stopped in my early 40's. Frankly making a living leaves me little time to "live in the library" which ironically, I have tried to do as a teenager! Yes, I do strongly identify with Kipling and CS Lewis because I understand what they were searching for and trying to escape. I find myself in the mountains of Colorado, almost walking in my Grandfather's foot steps. Perhaps I will publish something, someday....God Bless you!
Thank you & your son ever so much for your service. God bless you and he immensely! Especially now in the climate of fraud & misuse of our military when the best POTUS openly loved & respected y’all. Godspeed to you all 💕💕🙏🏼
My mother read my brother and I the first Narnia book,..I was 8 I read the rest on my own. And then read it again when I was older,..at 9. I did the same for my child.❤
The movie "Shadowlands" is one that I would highly recommend, as it shows the really human side of C.S. Lewis. I felt so sorry for him, as he is shown trying to cope with the early death of his wife.
I am not religious but his children’s books captured my heart. He describes dissociation and compartmentalization creatively, and the concept of god in one of the most palatable ways I’ve ever seen.
Yes, the music was kinda "outa control"... And everyone's comments about it are not way off...but they do set you up to think you are not gonna like it...so here's what I did; I DECIDED I wanted to enjoy it and instead of FOCUSING on the noise of the piano, I put my mind on the mans VOICE and after about 3 min, the voice was really all I was tuned into... It was WORTH it!!! Try that, the documentary is GREAT!!! So much good information you don't want to miss cause of some annoying music. Be persistent!! :)
Well it’s not that it’s annoying or distracting, for many of us we simply _can’t hear_ or understand the narrator, regardless of how much we try to focus on his voice, something I’m already doing (and always do in these things that either have loud background music or speakers who cannot annunciate properly and/or cannot regulate their volume level consistently such that they devolve into mumbling).
@@motoscotch Thanks for the reminder!! I often forget about cc. I'm hard of hearing and when the music overpowers the speaker, it's very difficult to understand him. The cc helps TREMENDOUSLY!
@@frofro7134 He used to brag that he became an atheist from reading "Mere Christianity" and wrote his book then to make fun of Lewis. He has since converted to Christianity and I'm sure he now recognizes what a gift CSL is to the world.
Wow what a wonderful in depth show and with a host of people that personally knew him or knew someone close to him like the host. Beautiful pictures and actually going to the locations. I love it. Thanks so much. Jack was such a loving man who walked the talk, supporting people that he could have just said that's to bad and gone on with his life. That is such a blessing to know. I have a new found respect for Jack although I have always thought well of him before that. He is a treasure and has made such a difference in so many peoples lives and conveying Christ to a lost world, especially at this time in our world. Praise God for him. Thanks for the upload.
Jack was DRIVEN by the love he embraced for the 3 women he chose to engage with in the noblist and exquisit depth of unconditional love. There lies his greatest inspiration, expression and achievement.
Can you reupload with the background music a little quieter please? I love C.S. Lewis and your channel does awesome work; but it is quite distracting. ☺️
Yeah, everything else about it is great, and perhaps the background music would have worked at that volume if it were different music, but it's just so frantic ...
Carissa Peterson Carter.......you are spot on. I struggled to hear the narration. I know I missed some words because the music was so loud. The music could have been left out altogether. I pray there was a button to simply turn it off.
When I was small although I was brought up pious RC, I was not greatly moved by the crucifiction. When I read the Narnia Chronicles when I was eight years old, I cried buckets over Aslan's death.
@Lynn stone I'm confused did i miss the part of the story where he went around killing millions of people to fallow his faith? or the part where he raped small boys? or maybe the part where he used the Pear of anguish.. dunno I think i have to re watch this .I had to miss so much then.
When as a parish pastor I used three of his works. To new concerts i read the 2nd chapter of the Srewtape Letters to them. To those sudo intellectuals I gave a copy of Mere Christanity. And to those dealing with grief i gave a copy of Grief Observed. He was in life a great man and still continues to live through his writings!

As many have posted, yes, the music does overpower the narrative when watching on phone. I turned on captions and was able to follow along with no issue. Thanks for uploading this doc. I'm not a choosing beggar.
Melinda Mercier I agree, but I’m not sure whether it’s the upload or the original doc. The British REALLY love their background music. I’ve noticed this on quite a few of them.
@@lzad3764 - Same is true in the US. I'm so accustomed to it, I scarcely notice it, unless it drowns out the dialogue, but my hearing is very good (as I don't listen to loud music nor do I keep ear plugs attached to my inner ear, which actually ruins hearing gradually.
Re the Elizabeth Anscomb (36:38) disappointment and Grief observed (57:36) was tow instances that made him even more of a hero to me. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story..
Very interesting indeed, especially for those of us who have read his books since we were kids. We lived & re lived his books and I guess still do. Sadly, the music in this video is most disturbing. Love from me in Sri Lanka.
One of my favourite authors: an extraordinary writer in my opinion. My favourite books: "The Horse and His Boy" (strange title, but thrilling book!) and "The Four Loves". Glad he accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and Saviour! The most intelligent and life changing decision he has made. Meet you there C.S. Lewis! Glory to Jesus!
I thought it was bollocks....no mention of my death in the Kennedy assasination....or Huxley... Nothing about my work at Disney.... Nothing about the other dead Disney associates... None of you find it suspicious Oswald rabbit and Ozwald magician is in JFK assasination.... How stupid are you people? Are you raised on lies and illusions by media's?
As a Welsh Celt brought up and schooled in England, I sympathise. I have lived among Anglos of UK and the Commonwealth all my life, and you never lose the "alien" sense. And that longing and aching and yearning for a beautiful past forever lost we call Hiraeth. And we carry that, too. Under the great sense of humour and love of life, that sadness is never far away.
Thank you so much for sharing this award winning documentary on an remarkable man, An introduction to C S Lewis life and loves, This as rekindled my love of English literature!!
I agree. One of the greatest things about Lewis was that although he became a staunch Christian Apologist, he was also very much unapologetically human, and he let it show through his works and life.
A really comprehensive overview of this mans life and works. A.N. Wilson, an intellectual and academic himself always presents his programmes in that style. Very enjoyable indeed.
People, turn on the caption if you are distracted with the background music. I wonder how all of you can read a book if your attention span is too little and get distracted easily. Thanks for the video. I love the whole content. 💕

The Chronicles of Narnia shaped my spirit. There is something stunning in that stories! Later I started reading his philosophical and theological works and they felt so rational, so cold, so English (though he was Irish,). As if there were two Lewises! Only reading Surprised by Joy helped me understand his "split" personality better. He is one of most important persons in my life, though I was born in 1984. I hope we will meet in Aslan's Country once, and have a tea. I've got so many things to tell him...!
Hi This documentary was great. I came upon it by accident. I am a fan of his Narnia Books and live in Worcester not far from Malvern where he went to school. The video was inspiring.
I have learned so much from this! Thank you. I have come to also understand that I like ANY documentary that AN Wilson involves himself in. He's curious, succinct, at approrpiate times funny and wonderful with accents and impersonations.
Thank you for this truly fascinating and informative video. I do have one quibble: I think personally you do C. S. Lewis an injustice when you imply that he was a bad poet. I don't know how much narrative poetry you read, but I have read the one you mention - with pleasure, not a struggle - and I found it pretty good. He was a massively intelligent man and had a fundamental feel for language and, crucially, the movement of a plot.
The "background" music and sound effects are much too loud; drowns out the narration. The narration volume itself is vastly inconsistent, often too soft and muffled to understand what he is saying.
I loved all of this!! Music was great and not distracting at all to me! I felt it added to and enhanced the story line. Thank you so much for an excellent production!! BLESSINGS!!
I have such fond memories of my mom reading chronicles of Narnia to my brother and I when we were coming along and we also as we got older read the lord of the rings books it’s so cool that him and Tolkien were best friends thank you to the both of you for making such good books that were such a staple in my childhood
