Talk about royal spouse roulette! I’m so glad that we’ve moved past marriages like that (for the most part). While marrying for love doesn’t always work out at least both parties knew each other and chose to marry each other. The idea of arranged marriages is just wrong. If I had married any of the men my mom had thought were suitable as potential son in law material I would have been terribly unhappy. Parents/stepparents/grandparents didn’t (and in some cultures still don’t) seem to care about the well-being of their child. It was/is all about wealth, power and securing political or social allies.

As one queen said to her husband: “Without me, you can have bastard children. Without you, I can have princes of the blood”. Therein lay the issue. With no way of proving paternity, a king could end up with somebody else’s child succeeding him on the throne.

She wasn't easy to impress. She actually couldn't stand Johan Struensee in the beginning, as he was indulging in the king's parties, but he was the only one that could control the king, just a bit.. So i don't think she was easy influenced by him. It was first when they found out that they had similar interests, that she started to open up to Struensee

You don't need to go back anywhere. This double standard is quit well and alive today. A recent past US president cheated on his wife when she has just given birth to their son. Had she said anything but "boys will be boys" and divorced him, her life would have been in jeopardy. Time will tell the final outcome of that debacle, but in general, the woman has been and will continue to be the villain especially in high social places.

@@aleasyah3032 William IV himself is a rather underrated king, especially taken the state of his predecessor brother, and it's true: Adelaide _is_ underrated. She lost 4 children prematurely (due to early death and stillbirth), but never mistreated her niece, rather taking her in. She donated money to the poor and payed for the building of a church and paving of a road. It's nice to see that her legacy is still lively (the city of Adelaide, Australia perhaps being the most well-recognized). Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Princess Charlotte of Wales, especially, despite being significant members, however, aren't much talked about today (as far as I know). I think that the mothers, wives and daughters of this house (Hanover) are often overshadowed by the scandals of their fathers, sons and brothers. Today, the Georgian era is getting its spotlight and hopefully, so will their queens.

I, too, think that Princess Charlotte is not quite acclaimed despite her potentials. It's bewildering to think how our world would have been if she or her son had only lived long enough. I wonder how Victoria must have thought of her cousin. It's understandable why not many people understand the pain and pressure Caroline Matilda had gone through, if not all women of the past. It's easy to say that someone lost their parents/children, was unfaithful to etc... Just like how when we look at past pandemics/epidemics or deadly diseases, all we can do is show pity, but to live through it is much harder.

Generally, it is believed that the Edward, Duke of Kent, like his brother, had only married Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld in hopes of fathering the heir to the throne of Britain. However, the marriage between Victoria's parents, may have taken place anyways. I had read an article on The Prince & His Lady where it was mentioned that Edward had a beloved mistress, Madame de Saint Laurent, who he had lived with for 27 years (or so, perhaps, I will need to recheck that article). He had lived a simple and temperate live in exile, but by the time he was returning to England, he was in a lot of debt. The debt had come possibly for losses in shipwreck and due to his lower income. He had realized that the only way to get rid of the endless cycle of debt was to get married to a noble-woman. So, he had to leave his mistress and look for marriage options. There it was written that this was being arranged even before Charlotte had died. However, I am not entirely sure about the authenticity of my sources, and I must admit, I have to look for the specific article I am sourcing from. But if that is the case, then they would have gotten along, in a reality which never existed. We know that the Duke of Kent was about 51 years old when he married the 32-year-old widow princess. I was first told that the marriages of both William and Edward occurred in hopes that it would produce the future monarch.

Sometimes they married girls as young as 11 or 12yrs. They waited until she was older to consumate the marriage of the husband was a gentleman. It is still normal for girls of 9 or 10yrs to be married in a lot of African countries also I think the same in India. So sad these girls have a short childhood.

That was a norm back then. Catherine of Aragon was married to Henry VIII's older brother at 14. He was 14 but died not long after. She married Henry VIII at 20 ish.

They got married very young long ago even as late as the early 20th Century. I can't say anything. I'll be 42 next week & I have been married 24 years as of July 23, 2021. (Yes I got married at not quite 18)...

@@livesandhistories It all started off with the fact that I commented on a video about John of Leyden -a 16th century Christian revolutionary who temporarily took over a city called Munster in north west Germany and I commented on the fact that Meyerbeer had written a grand opera about the subject called "Le Prophete" which contains a famous coronation march and a skater's ballet.You Tube then came up with other works by Meyerbeer and one of them was the "Struensee Overture".Grand opera in 19th century Europe was like Hollywood movies in the 20th century that covered all sorts of dramatic stories from the past.

Matilda Caroline (and Struensee)'s Daughter became Duchess Louise Augusta of Augustenborg. She had 3 children, Caroline Amalie, Christian August and Frederik. So through her, the grandchildren became Queen Caroline Amalie of Denmark, Duke Christian August of Slesvig-Holsten-Sønderborg-Augustenborg and Frederik Emil August, the Prince of Nør The grandsons (Duke Christian and Prince Frederik) became traitors of the crown, even though their sister was the Queen. They fled the country and never returned to denmark again
