Dutton found solace and inspiration in theater. Upon release from solitary, he seized an opportunity to start a drama group for the prison talent show, negotiating with the warden on the condition of returning to school for his GED. Determined to turn his life around, Dutton pursued his education, earning his GED and eventually completing a two-year college program at Hagerstown Junior College, graduating with an Associate of Arts degree in 1976.

First, I cannot believe it's been 30 years since Roc aired!! I absolutely loved that show, the cast, and the story lines. As with many of the "family friendly" shows of that era, they fall off/cancel as the world continued to change into the more extreme mimicking the current events of the time. So sad to hear so many of the cast have departed this life. Those were truly the days of great family TV.

I love Charles Dutton in every thing he acted in . He's so talented !! I cannot believe they won't put him and his talented self on TV, I and my family never issued a segment of Roc , I never missed a movie he acted in and yes he's underrated , he's a very good actor and we his fans are missing him on all screens !! 🎉🎉 Miss and love you Charles Dutton ❤

Im a 70 yo white female. In my opinion, ROC was one of the best programs ever on TV. FOX blew it and to be honest I dont think I've watched more than 8 hours of TV in the past 25 years. Im an adult. I want real grown up thoughtful TV. Its doesnt exist anymore.

I love Roc and watch the reruns whenever I get a chance. The story lines were what I related to most and it was so great to see a loving black couple on tv at that time. Kudos to Dutton for staying the course of his mission and not giving into the agenda of the network. He could not and did not betray himself. He stood with his convictions of what he wanted to produce. Thank you!

Early Fox and early WB basically dumped black shows after they got a little success. But Roc was a show that was always a play. It would have been better as an HBO show. I think it would have been an interesting niche streaming show in modern day.

Dutton's first Broadway play was "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." It was also the late, great playwright August Wilson's debut. Dutton originated the role of the hard-headed trumpeter, Levee. He got a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor. The late, great Chadwick Boseman played Levee in the Netflix film adapted version.

I was just a teenager when I saw the show and even then I felt Roc’s presence on screen. I knew that he was presenting something different and important.
