While in the army~My Dad met her at a train station during the war. He said she was so friendly and took time to ask him question and make him feel important. No ones perfect. She did the right thing at the right time. ❤️
I saw her in person at a Chinese restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio many many years ago. She had to be much older but she was stunning. Years later i saw Linda Carter and was amazed that both ladies were far more beautiful in person. The screen did not do either any justice.
I had the same experience with Elizabeth Montgomery years ago at the height of her "Bewitched" fame. I was at the Rose Parade when she was a commentator that year. Some of us followed her back to her trailer after she finished. She came out to sign autographs. She borrowed my pen to sign them, so I was able to stand right next to her while she was signing them, and let me tell you! That woman was drop-dead beautiful in person, even more so in person than on television!
She did not only what was best for herself but also for her child, Being illegitimate or a bastard as I was called was a heavy burden to carry. Her daughter was lucky to have such a wonderful mother.
It had to have been the most difficult thing to date to place in child in an orphanage. Luckily a bit later she was able to adopt her own child. A baby would not have let her pursue her career because of the long, odd hours and location changes. Once better settled in as an actress, she did the adoption when her daughter did not need her 24/7. Hard but good decision was made by a loving, young, single mom.
So do I. Loretta did what she had to do to save her career and still have her child in her life. Her experience was instrumental in her helping other women and children. I'd say that she was a remarkable woman.
I remember the entrance she made when opening the tv show she hosted. My mother thought it was beautiful and I was her child and joined her appreciation.
ABSOLUTELY She did the right thing keeping her pregnancy quiet. In those days there would’ve been no Eno forgiveness and an amazing career would I have been lost. I frequently saw her at early morning mass in Westwood at Saint Pauls. She was as gorgeous in person as she was on the screen. What an amazing woman. See you on the other side Loretta Young! ❤️
Well it's OK, She didn't have to tell that in public ,but She could tell thar in private that She is his daughter so He could spend some time with his daughter ,He missed the time with his daughter and She could tell the true to her daughter I understand that She didn't want destroyed her career or his ,because he was married ,but they could discussed in private Making this plan that She adopted her own daughter, apparently her sisters and her mother knew it and helped her and Clark Gable seen his daughter only 1 time in his life and did He really didn't know the true ?
This is indeed a heartwarming story. I was meant to be an abortion, and from foster care I was raised by family. My mother did nothing. I commend Loretta Young for having found a way to keep, and nurture her daughter. Wow.
She did what she had to do and I commend her for it , especially at that time. She was a beautiful women . I watched her show when I was growing up ! She was very elegant and classy lady!
Brilliant idea and plan to keep her baby. She did it instead of aborting and kept her reputation in tact during a time when would have been blackballed by Hollywood and maliciously slandered by the media. Kudos to the late Loretta “Gretchen” Young.
@@phelpsuzan incorrect/overdramatic. These hollywood starlets 100 percent had doctors they could go to to get an abortion. Many stars of the time had abortions such as ava gardner. It was kept secret though. Many women in those times had abortions to protect themselves against the stigma of single motherhood unfortunately. Movie studios were known to push their actresses to get an abortion in order to keep their contracts. Young herself was almost aborted by her own mother because they were so poor. Her mothers doctor had agreed to do it.
Later, Loretta Young helped other young unwed mothers and wrote about it in a 1966 Readers Digest article called "Unforgettable Sister Winifred." Sister Winifred was a nursing nun who ran a home for unwed mothers who were mostly aged 11 to 15.
Man, the clothes this woman wore were spectacular. Gorgeous! She had such a cute figure, I bet the wardrobe depts had fun making clothes and dressing her. Like their own living doll. I wish women still dressed with class like in her era.
I used to watch her show as a little girl and loved her. She was so beautiful and classy. I continued to watch her movies. I remembered when she died. It sadden me greatly. Miss this fabulous lady.
.....I wonder how her daughter is, I hope she's doing wonderful, I hope we all stay safe, ...we are living in the lasts days I'm afraid (no I'm not really I trust in Jehovah God and King Christ Jesus) I hope I make it to see the world at peace and the Earth restored and allll our loved ones returned to us here Revelations 21:3-8💛🙏🏼🏞️
Such a sweet wonderful real lady. Unfortunately she had to hide her baby girl for months because of the times. Well she showed them all!!! All three of her children grew up as stable good people.
@@lindaallen1883 She wasn't true to her beliefs and religion, I am a Catholic and I know we are not supposed to have affairs with married men. Also, I would never had left my baby in some place with strangers, that was terrible, her career was more important than her baby.
@@leonorfontes57 Have you heard of the quote, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? Loretta was no match for womanizing Clark! I believe that her motives were pure. Lovely lady!
@@JanieK2 No match for Clark? Why was she sleeping with Clark if she was no match for Clark? She definitely felt that she was a match for Clark even if he was married. Don't be ridiculous, Jane.
I feel that because if the situation and it also being Hollywood, Loretta Young did the right thing, and she never forgot her daughter which is so very heartwarming to know how she got her back. She loved her daughter and was determined to raise her on her own even if that is what it took!,!
@@jacquelinemartensen5130 Yes he factually did know it was his baby girl. Loretta only had an affair with Clark Gable so he knew it had to be his girl. I seen an interview with the daughter and her speaking about about her famous parents (now deceased) she was 73 yrs old and she remarked that when he visited her mums house, that he made a fuss over her plus he'd paid alot of interests in her, for instance listening to her and tell her stories. Instinctively she'd always knew that he was her father ...then she'd think she was actually crazy about thinking it. But, oh lord, she was Clark Gables image only female. Her mother admitted it to her on her death bed
I can't imagine a mother giving up her child for adoption but happily she was able to get her daughter back! I remember her program in the 50's & loved seeing her as Loretta always had such a beautiful smile & she was beautiful!!!
It is a shame women are forced to pretend that they are not pregnant or to deny their children. Poor Judith was subjected to rejection in her baby years, then 'adopted' by her birth Mother. Clark Gable was allowed to Tom cat around & because of his popularity he thought it was his due. Many men father children they never acknowledge. This is one of the true shames of society. Thank you for bringing the truth to light. She was a lovely lady & my family faithfully watched her TV show.
Thank you, Katherine, for voicing my own thoughts which I would not be so gracious in voicing. I for one never did like Clark Gable and now I know why.
He was in exactly the same position she was. He would also have lost his career. But I suppose that’s fine because he’s only a man. Also, she did not give the date rape story to her daughter, it was her daughter-in-law. And that shift is yet another lie to keep her famed reputation. The cast of the film they were making all commented on the passionate affair they had during filming in the wilderness. Once back in Hollywood it was over.
I am almost 80 yrs. Old...I know 4 a fact, we would never have been able to enjoy the countless moments of her special ability to RADIATE OUR 10 INCH TV SCREEN We all ❤'d her !!!! Lynda Schultz
Back then unwed mothers were severely frowned upon. She would have lost everything had she bolded proclaimed I got knocked up by Clark Gable, a married man. To say she would have been dragged was an understatement. It was the best she could do given the circumstances.
Many adopted their babies out. I was extremely blessed by a cousin I didn't know I had, until in my 40s. He was so very nice. Thank God my Aunt adopted him out, when at 14 she became pregnant. People's lives are sacred. Their lives aren't ours to throw away.
It is not only ‘the best she could do’ ... at that time, it was beyond the best she could do, it was the honorable - yet risky, thing to do. She was a good human, a good mother, a good woman.
I have always been a fan of hers. Scan do no wrongs. I loved her and if that was how she managed to keep her daughter and her good name . It's a shame they had To go such lengths to protect themselves. I'm proud of her strength
We were not there in her time frame. So I would say it's none of our business how she handled her life. She did what she thought was best at the time for her.
I had a sister-in-law who was her double. She lived and worked in CA but I met her at a family home in Utah whose back yard joined their family's back yard. I was never a "Groupie" as they are known today. But like Loretta, you couldn't mistake their beauty and I was a believer that "Beauty is as Beauty does". Family members were also beautiful people; inside and out. She lived in CA as I also once did when married to their brother who was in the service . Even he was as gifted and sang in a quartet and was known to hit High C with his voice. L O L I saw him act in plays put on with players from USO members. You can't argue with good genes and talent.
I feel so bad for her daughter. My wife was adopted and knew at an early are about her birth mother. Finding out the truth about her birth father was quite an ordeal. The truth always has a way of coming out. Stay safe folks.
For the time she had her daughter she did the best, at least she was able to get her daughter with her. It just shows what a mother would do for the love of her child.
She was very smart and beautiful ❤️ to have riemideyed such a hard ball ,. Thrown at her at that time in her life by a bully. She planned a life including her baby's future with honor and class. 💕 Love her more.
It's easy to criticize based on today's standards - but things were very different when Loretta Young became pregnant. She was absolutely correct to keep it hidden then. Things were very hard for women, back in the 'good old days'.
I know some single moms keep their babies today which is good but things have not changed all that much. Closed adoption records were based on the birth mother privacy lie and Christians continue to use that to keep the records closed and steal our birth certificates from us. Catholics and Mormons still demand that single moms sign their babies over to adoption agencies who then sell their babies for up to 50k to a sterile couple. The lies in adoption today are outrageous, like some adoption agencies tell single pregnant young women that God let you get pregnant so you could give your baby to a childless couple. No one still wants to listen to we adoptees about how much we hate adoption and the system and want the records open as well. Nor do adopters and agencies want the public to know that family preservation is the best thing for children and how much adoption hurts us in so many ways. Same prejudice/greed, different century.
She did the best she could at the time she lived. She was so beautiful & so talented. So glad she kept her daughter. So said for both of them to have cancer. She was also right to not have her book published until after her death. There have always been women who have suffered from what men have done to them. Way more than people ever imagined, & still going on today. Women are tricky amazing. Loretta was absolutely one of the best!
Like she said "date rape" was never talked about during or even right after her encounter with Clark Gable for years. I can't imagine how she emotionally handled the date rape, pregnancy and then adopting her daughter without talking to a counselor or anybody about what really happened to her for years. She obviously was one strong woman and kudo's to you Loretta Young for being able to find your daughter, adopt her, love her and raise her by yourself. I hope that one day Loretta was able to tell her daughter the truth since during that time it was NOT talked about. Thank you for the video Loretta Young was one of my favorite actresses for sure.
This biography didn't mention that she adopted two little girls from the orphanage at the same time. Kept the two for some short time and returning one of them later. The one she kept was her real daughter.
Judy was not a happy person. She was bitter about being lied to and never knowing her biological father. She only met him once as a teenager and at that time she didn't know he was actually her father (neither Young nor Gable had the decency to tell her). She finally cottoned to all the rumors and confronted her mother who then admitted it. By that time Gable was dead.
@@danacaro-herman3530 Abortion is a difficult decision that many women make. Calling it an abomination will not stop people from making that decision. It is not something that everyone can do or would do, but the Bible does NOT even call it an abomination and when you do that it is like cutting a woman down for making that difficult and sometimes necessary decision.
In those days, a pregnancy out of wedlock would have destroyed her career. I think she was very brave to have her baby when so many actresses at the time were aborting, and it was very smart of her to "adopt " her little girl the way she did.
So beautiful and such a gentle spirit. Always thinking fondly of her. I loved watching Loretta Young spin into the room at the start of her show! And I think, since you asked, that she was wise in respect to her daughter for the times she lived in.
@beverly ledbetter Clark gable thought he was king & every woman had to bow to him & do his bidding! And men pretty much ruled, whatever they want or said! Especially in movie industry! Look at harvey weinstein & what he has done!!
Hind sight is always 20:20. Whatever Loretta Young did or thought she had to do to maintain her child's life and her career obviously worked out to everyone's benefit. This was a time when such carrying on was not tolerated by a woman. Take a look at what happened to Ingrid Bergman who had a child out of wedlock in the Forties.
I think Loretta did the best she could under a very bad set of circumstances. Had she revealed her pregnancy to the 1930's general public, it would have totally wrecked her career. And remember, she did make a point to come back for her daughter after only a short period of time (19 months). I harbor no ill will towards Loretta for the way she handled it.
I cannot speak for her nor judge her actions. She alone knew what was best for herself and her daughter. I only know that, as a very young adolescent, she charmed me with her grace and beauty. She was my first female crush. :-) Thank you.
Her mother was a strong single mother too under different circumstances with all those kiddos and no husband. She had good genes, common sense and a strong upbringing. She needed her career to provide for her first born and qualify for adopting her child. She was blessed, beautiful and brilliant.
I have always loved Loretta Young, and after I was grown and in my twenties had several people tell me how much I looked like her. To find out what a strong woman she was really seals my love for her. I never had anything as life altering happen as Loretta, but I have had my share of a difficult life. With a divorce, relocation, and raising two kids on my own for a short time. Then I found a perfect mate, the love of my life, and he was my support and cheerleader! He passed away 4 years ago and I miss him so very much! Loretta Young was a beautiful, gracious lady who was all that in spite of the turmoil going on in secret. She is always going to be my favorite older actress! God bless and rest for the next adventure, Loretta!
I was born out of wedlock in 1965 during the height of the civil rights movement, in the South. My mother was made to apologize in front of her Church for getting pregnant. She never got over the shame and guilt. Although she loved & cared for me, she married a predator just to give me a name. Eventually her mental health declined and she became a toxic & manipulative person. She never told me who my biological father was & I had to hire a private investigator to locate him when I was 30yrs old, but he was already deceased. All and all, what women had to go through back then was ridiculous. But unfortunately women like my mother & Loretta Young will never understand the toll it took on their daughters, children and grandchildren.
Do not blame her one iota. Bless you Loretta. You were an amazing actress, and a wonderful human. Thank God for film, we can still watch your performances.
Exactly right. We can't dwell on the past, or we'd drive ourselves crazy. In hindsight, she probably knew it wasn't a good idea to go out on a date with a married man. She made the best out of a bad situation. She didn't take the easy way out. For that, she has my utmost respect.
@@The_Whimsical_Stenographer She probably thought nothing of it. They were fellow employees and she very likely thought it was just a dinner like with any other cast/crew member. There was no reason for her to believe a married man would do such a thing. I'm quite certain, even in Hollywood, she was quite naive before that happened.
I loved Loretta Young in the movie the bishops wife with Cary Grant she did a wonderful job in that movie. I’ve seen many movies with Loretta Young now and her acting ability is fantastic but the personality that comes through Is even more charming. I think she did the only thing she could under all the circumstances with her daughter. She did what was right for herself and what was right for her daughter.
Loretta Young was very brave, keeping Her daughter considering those Times. We watched The Loretta Young Show every week, and yes, I was named "Loretta" because Mom admired Loretta Young.
People forget that it’s not just about the pregnancy back then, it was the hell they rained down upon the children that was even worse. Children born out of wedlock wore a scarlet letter all their lives back in those days. Now you just get cancelled. I adore Loretta even more now. She was breathtaking and real all at once.
We still do get rained down upon. That's what closed adoption records are. We also are constantly emotionally abused whenever we say how much we hate adoption and the system and push for open records and family preservation -IE: keeping your baby. Adoption agencies and adopters constantly harass us online and off and push lie after lie after lie.
She did what she had to do in those tough times when judgements fell hard. She did right by her little girl in a short period of time, although the truth was kept from her daughter for a long time. Dismayed to find out about Gable , but that is Hollywood for you. I would say that Ms Young did the best that she could given the circumstances of that era. She seemed to be a very special caring and compassionate lady.
It’s amazing to see how several decades plus down the road opinions about date rape are viewed completely different. This wonderful woman did the most difficult and honorable thing at that time. How brave - I hope her daughter never once questioned her mothers love. With a gentle soul like her Mom I am sure she knew all along how much she was loved. Thank you for this insight into Loretta’s personal life. A woman of character!
I blame Clark Gable not her. She was only. 22! In those days an out wedlock child would have meant suicide. He never took responsibility for his affair. Lots of males, silent, and talkies took advantage of young women.
@@mimimatasar3699 I know what Loretta Young said about it. Y'all act like Gable was some paragon of virtue, lol. He cheated on all of his wives, pressuring a young woman would not be a shock.
My Mother named my youngest sister 'Loretta' because she considered Loretta Young not only beautiful and talented, but one (if not THE) classiest women in the film industry. NOTHING she ever did made my Mother think otherwise...my Mother knew class when she saw it. My Mom's Credo: Money has nothing to do with class. Many with ALOT of money couldn't buy class, if they even knew what it was. And many with limited means have it, and don't even realize it. You were the classiest Mom💜
Loretta Young did what she had to do in those days to keep her daughter close until she could openly have her full time, a lot of women suffered that kind of abuse especially in the movie industry. its a sad part of our history but where this lovely woman was concerned she was an amazing actress and a great lady. She was always one of my favorites.
When Lewis was fifteen, Gable came to her mother's house to visit her briefly. Gable asked Lewis about her life and then, upon leaving, kissed her on her forehead. It was the only time that Lewis ever spoke to Gable, and at the time, she had no idea that he was her father.[
She would have been ostracized in the 1930s had she revealed the truth. She did the right thing to save both her career and Clark Gable's, although he would have been spared most of the shame at that time. You showed many photos of Loretta Young in the 1940s and 1950s. You included some from the early 1930s, but if people today saw Loretta Young in many of her films made between 1931 and 1935, they would be mesmerized by her natural beauty. She was absolutely gorgeous in the early 1930s. Just look at her in Midnight Mary, Employees Entrance, Man's Castle, Big Business Girl, Born To Be Bad, They Call It Sin, I Like Your Nerve, Platinum Blonde, She Had To Say Yes, Taxi, and many other films she made when she was not yet 21. Amazing what a good actress she was even as a teenager. IMO, Loretta Young looked her prettiest in the early 1930s. Unfortunately, those depression era films are rarely shown. When she came out of retirement near the end of her life, she made an incredibly beautiful holiday film for TV called "Christmas Eve." She was much older but her beauty was still in tact.
@@anrose8335 Yes, his womanizing caught up with him. Massive heart attach at age 59. He was still playing romantic leads with girls young enough to be his daughters. He looked like an old man in his 50s. Hurrah for Loretta!! Please catch some of her films made from 1931 to 1934. Wow! What a natural beauty without all the excessive makeup and severe hair styles. That's why I like the early 1930s better than the 1940s. Love her in Taxi with James Cagney.
We must remember that back in those times, an unwed mother, no matter who they were, was considered a pariah. The fact that she was an active Catholic also figured into her decision. She did what she thought was best for the times. When she knew that it wasn’t going to hurt anyone, she allowed the information to be released. I always thought she was a classy lady and this confirms it. She could have made so much trouble for her studio and Clark Gable if she wanted but, she chose not to. That took a lot of gumption for her to have her child. I’ve not seen where Clark Gable was told but I’m assuming not so we don’t know his feelings on the matter. She still remains one of my favorite leading ladies and will continue to be. My favorite movie of hers is Come to the Stable. If you haven’t seen it, it’s marvelous.
Hi Susan, It was her, Loretta's own daughter, that betrayed her, and her confidence and also her secret! Her own daughter hounded her almost to death, and insisted that Loretta tell her what happened! Then her daughter Judith turned on her, and outed Loretta, and set out to deliberately hurt her, out of possibly, hate, envy and jealously. Why else be so cruel and evil?! Then her own daughter, doesn't even get her mother a beautiful Casket and Couch Crypt, in a Mausoleum! She had that beautiful mother of hers Cremated?! Really? Seriously? I'm glad I don't have a daughter like that, or any daughters quite frankly!
That wonderful lady endured that tragedy with grace and dignity, all the while "the king of Hollywood" continued his life with no accountability. He certainly didn't deserve all the admiration.
We don't even have a "he said, she said". We have a "I was told (but she's dead and can't verify), he's dead and never knew he was accused". Funny with all his catting around that this is the only accusation, 2nd hand at that, that's been laid against him. And tell me, if she was so innocent, why was she dating a married man?
I've never heard of Moby Grape. What songs did they sing? I Graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1967, and you can see my picture, if you look for it in the Annual.
@@chirelle.alanalooney8609 The average person never heard of them. Similar to CA group called, Love and NY group called The Velvet Underground - they often influenced artists who were not as good but became more well known than they. Moby songs can be found on RU-vid. Peter Lewis sings, Sitting by a Window but my favorites are It's a Beautiful Day Today, 8:05 and Hey Grandma. (I'm from the East Coast.)
She did what she felt was best and she was right during that time the media and Hollywood and the public would have crucified her and the child if the story came out. She was a terrific actress & quite the lady. She had a wonderful TV show every week. I always wondered why they never repeat them on TV like they do with old shows like I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, etc.
Nice job on Loretta Young, lovely lady and Hollywood legend. My grandmother adored her and I can remember sitting with her and watching the Loretta Young Show. Putting things in prospective, she had no alternative in dealing with a pregnancy which would have destroyed her career. We are talking 1935 here and society was nowhere near as permissive as today. I applaud her for not having an abortion and the strength of her faith and her morality. I’d heard that when Judith was young she was visited by Clark Gable on at least two occasions, obviously with Loretta’s permission. Even at the time of his untimely death in 1960 society still would never have accepted the disclosure so Loretta made the best of a terrible situation. I remember watching a TV performance in her later years when she briefly came out of retirement and her talents were as obvious then as they were in her earliest films. She was certainly a beautiful woman and though a Cad, I can understand Clark Gable’s putting the move on her. I’m sure she was not his only starlet conquest in Hollywood.
I remember The Loretta Young Show...what a delight to watch this beautiful woman always come through the door wearing the most gorgeous clothes and having the hour glass figure to boot. She could do anything. The secret was really kept secret and rightly so because of the time in which it happened. Either the woman had the child or an abortion and Miss Young being Catholic and respected her beliefs would never consider an abortion. I liked Clark Gable too but when chemistry is there, we weren’t there, so we don’t know enough to pass judgement on anyone, only God knows. She was a great actress and she gave us a sense of self to be a better person, ❤️ love life and all it has to offer. I’m 77 now, Ms Young was a favorite!
