Jim, you have an amazing talent for getting people to open up and talk. We see a completely different side of players during these interviews.

It was brilliant for Lawrence to win the World Cup in 2003 so he could dedicate all the hard work he put into it to her memory. I remember the night of the tragedy as we’d driven home from Clapham to Hackney any had crossed over Southwark bridge at about 1:30 am that Morning. Obviously, I only realised on the Monday that I’d been so close to a terrible catastrophe and it put into perspective how cruel fate can be. Obviously, Lawrence was unknown at the time but I believe that his sister was a talented dancer, who was robbed of her life while still in her teens. Their boat was dragged under by the bigger dredger so they had little chance if they were in the wrong part of the boat. Heart breaking tragedy. R.I.P. to all the victims.

Had the honor of playing against Lawrence many years ago (1991 or 1992) in our club opening. He also helped one of our under 14's with some charity work. Top bloke.

Brutal honesty -just as he played the game. Gone up another notch in my estimation -which was already high (and being an Irishman I'll claim some of his heritage!)

Always loved Lawrence. The complete No 8. I never remember England loosing the ball when he went into a ruck or maul. I never related to his emotional nature at the time, but having just lost my son, I am with him full on. Always open, always honest. Thank you for everything over the years.

This is a wonderfully intimate conversation with somebody who always seemed so quintessentially English, yet was obviously very emotional, and understandably so now in view of his family background and the tragic circumstances of his sister’s death. To us celts he was in many ways a pantomime villain, feared and respected in equal measure, admired also because he wore his heart on his sleeve. I’m sure he was probably bemused by how Munster fans for example would boo him vigorously (!) on the pitch but treat him like a long-lost cousin afterwards.

I remember this in a very tangential manner - it was because around the same time the Head Boy at my school lost a family member in a tragic manner and went off the rails (understandably of course) for all of 48 hours and yet was promptly expelled by our school for his troubles, there was a keen sense of injustice and at the same time there were Ampleforth old boys going around saying that a similar thing had just happened with a sixth-former up at Ampleforth, Come the end of year Prize Giving when he should have been on stage our ex-Head Boys friends all called in a bomb threat on the occasion and everybody had to evacuate the place instead. I was just a youngster viewing events from the sidelines but Dallaglio mentioning this brings it back. As it happened in our small community there were people who lost family members in the Marchioness disaster as well. Terrible event visited upon those poor families and still resonating down the years.

As an Irishman, always feared and respected this fantastic player. Most rugby players admire the best players of other nations and don't go for this nonsense about England. That was an incredible team that won the World Cup and Lawrence was a dynamo.

I always imagined Lawrence when playing as a future England coach, however he chose an alternative future career.

What I imagine a classical centurion looked like. He played like one of Caesar’s best. He’d have made any national team. Glad he stayed true to his country of birth, however. I am of SA formative upbringing and Yorkshire/SA/German roots. I’m not grinding any axe. However, does anyone think it is getting out of hand when over 1/3 of a national team is made up of ex Saffers, Oceanians, etc? I believe Scotland started with 5 out of 15 Saffers. Not sure about the place of birth of the others. I think the qualification rules for national team rugby need looking at again. One of the Scotland subs also played for Oz at the last RWC. Either change the rules or change the concept of national teams - but that will be to the detriment of smaller / less wealthy nations. SA and Argentina may be the most national of national teams (the only real national teams). Imagine how good well financed Pacific Islander rugby could become.
