This was several months before their seminal album release 'Up To Here' dropped, and The Gordfather’s trademark swagger was in full-force! 'Up To Here' is one of the best Rock N Roll albums ever recorded.

Man. It’s so nice to see someone with such a natural high musical Intellect get to know the Hip. Those first tunes were from their promo album (I think). Opiated was one of my favourite tunes from Up To Here…their breakout album. You’re right, the songs get better as you go. This festival was before they made it big, hence why nobody is there. I know the video quality is terrible, but seeing such early Hip and Gord was a goldmine find for me. Thanks so much Rory. Watch for the dancing kid in the next part. So good a small kid catches the Gord intoxication.

I think Rory was trying to identify the cover they were playing... a Them tune - "I can only give you everything" (1966). They used to play a few covers from the 60s back then. "I'm not your stepping stone", "Proud Mary" (I think) are ones I remember

Used to be called “Dominion Day,” if that helps. Ah, London, Ontario (metro population of around 520k today, but only around 370k back then). I’m writing from my home in the north end of that very same city! Although when I saw them that same year, it was up the highway about 100km’s east toward Toronto, in a place called Kitchener-Waterloo (metro population 340k then and 575k now). Both are nice communities located in the middle of the Great Lakes, so lovely sandy beaches this time of year.

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned that the folks who settled this part of Canada had limited creativity (or were incredibly homesick). I saw this because Gord was referring to the slow-moving (and only navigable by canoe) Thames River about 100 yards to his right. The Avon River is a tributary of the Thames, upon which sits the small theatre city of Stratford. The next two communities to the east of London are Woodstock and Paris. Head the other way and you run into Chatham. Keep going to the US border and you hit Windsor, just south of Detroit. So… you get the idea…

Fell in love with The Hip when first EP came out.Songs like Last American Exit,Small Town Bringdown and Highway Girl were getting a fair amount of airplay.

Watching this show is like if you'd seen The Beatles in a bar in Hamburg in the early 60's. Nobody sitting on that grass had any idea just how big this band was going to be in this country.
