The trans electrologist providing cheap hair removal - BBC Stories

Trans women often struggle with hair removal, so Siobhan set up her own clinic in Manchester providing electrolysis - the only form of permanent hair removal. Clients pay what they can afford - £60, £30 or £15 per hour. Now she's fundraising to train others and would like to see "trans electrologists everywhere".
Video Journalist: Ruth Evans
We BBC Stories, are a group of journalists making films, long and short, with the younger audience (18-24) in mind. The idea is to tackle issues which concern and impact this group of people. So think about anything from race and identity to mental health, money and much more.

@@LemonDropYum Start with laser if you have dark hair and it will remove a lot of the beard hair but it doesn’t work well on blonde or grey hair.You will need to switch to electrolysis eventually to remove what is left. The hair I had removed by laser didn’t come back but I have a lot of grey hairs which don’t respond to electrolysis.

@@racheltaylor6578pretty much the same with me. None of the layered hair has come back and it’s all just really soft, cute peach fuzz. I’ve got a very few light hairs amongst the 99% that were brunette and they’re being slowly picked away at by electrolysis along with the stubborn ones on the upper lip, lower lip and chin.

It makes me really mad how they want it free on the NHS What about the elderly who have worked all their lives and can’t get adult social care because there’s no money left because of people that want cosmetic treatments for their vanity and mental illness, what happens when they need treatments for cancer one day but the hospital can’t afford it because of unnecessary treatments

Frankly, every electrologist on the planet is over-the-moon accepting and helpful for trans people. Her story of "we don't treat people like you" is an egregious fabrication. I've been an electrologist for 45-years and have MANY trans clients and many are still friends. I taught classes in Norway, the UK, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Peru ... and never met anyone who would say, "We don't treat people like you." I don't believe her story, and don't know why the BBC picked this up and didn't instead talk about the wonderful work being done in the UK by electrologists ... and the work of the UK association that holds continuing classes on trans people ... to make all procedures better. I'm going to do a video on this, because this cannot stand ... I'm angry.

I have been practicing electrology for 45-years. I have met (and taught) electrologists in ten countries, and met and known many hundreds of electrologists (from Japan to Norway). I have never met a transphobic electrologist. Instead, we are kind and extremely compassionate and very supportive of the trans community. I've worked on at least 25 trans clients. I have actually charged as little as $10 per hour for a few trans clients. And, the plastic surgeon with whom I work ... has performed free work on trans clients. Frankly, I do not believe your statement “We don’t treat people like you.” And, I don’t believe any trans person was ever “asked to leave the office.” This is especially true in the U.K. where electrologists are extremely supportive. (I do note that you are not reporting first-hand experiences ... and, of course, people exaggerate.) Still, you are giving our profession a very negative review, and you should not be doing it ... because it’s not true.

@ElectrologyNow
@ElectrologyNow 3 года назад
@@lowenbrock9231 Yes, it does happen ... but not in our profession; this is especially true in the U.K. I think the featured electrologist made-it-up: a "Smollett job." This discussion is not about "transphobia" (indeed, real) ... it's about transphobic electrologists "telling people to get out of their office!" Total BS! I would wager you could not find one transphobic electrologist in our entire profession. We have yearly lectures on the trans community and how best to serve them. Our past association president was a trans-woman. Many of our members are trans. This electrologist's sources were all second-party rumors and hearsay ... so I don't believe her story at all.
@lowenbrock9231
@lowenbrock9231 3 года назад
@@ElectrologyNow im glad the electrologist community is very accepting of trans people but to say that a trans persons story about a transphobic electrologist is fake is super ignorant. yes it might be more rare in your profession but it can still happen no matter if you have a trans president. also a lot of trans ppl can't afford the most expensive treatments so the cheaper ones usually don't follow ur communities values. don't tell trans ppl what we have or have not been through cus that is transphobic.
@ElectrologyNow
@ElectrologyNow 3 года назад
@@lowenbrock9231 For me, it's about sources of information. If you notice, the stories were second-hand, "a person told me... " I'm always suspect of stories with no personal source. An electrologist saying "We don't treat 'people LIKE YOU'!" Frankly, no professional in their right mind would say something so ridiculous and of such a low educational level. (Especially in the U.K.) Of course, we are all used to this, our "news media" do it all the time ... BBC and CNN and all the rest. We often discover that there was actually no confirmation of the story and the "source" was just made-up; but we all tend to accept it anyway. You're still missing the point: I'm saying nothing about what "trans people have been through." I'm talking about stories not based on direct evidence. Same issue I have with Jessie Smollett and his fabricated "racial attack on him." Of course Black people have endured generations of horrible treatment (I was a Civil Rights worker) ... still, that doesn't make Smollett's story credible. Look at it this way ... If I don't believe Smollett's story, and I don't, does that make me a racist? I hope you see the point?
@ElectrologyNow
@ElectrologyNow 2 года назад
@@lowenbrock9231 Sorry this "story" is fake, but the greater SIN is the BBC promoting such a disgusting story. My profession has been promoting trans rights and legitimate medical help for decades ... before anyone was talking about it. Why doesn't your BBC interview electrologists who have been at the forefront of trans issues? I wonder why our "Leftist mainstream news media" continues to separate us into victims and perpetrators. This creation of "professional victims" is now ubiquitous in the UK and the USA. Why do they continue to put us into warring tribes ... It's really the media that is a fault. The British Association should sue the BBC.

Can't you get treatment on the NHS? I know Sk:n take NHS referrals from the GIC.
@siobhanreilly9697
@siobhanreilly9697 5 лет назад
We certainly can get NHS treatment and there are a number of NHS approved services in the UK. There are a couple of problems with NHS provision though: -Many trans people find that the allowance given by the NHS for hair removal isn't enough to complete the job. -The NHS only funds facial hair removal and pre-surgical hair removal, so other body parts such as chest etc. need to be privately funded. -The NHS approved services are currently oversubscribed in some areas, meaning that waiting lists are extremely long. -In order to get GIC referral/funding for hair removal, you of course need to be a GIC patient. Some Gender Identity Clinics in this country have a wait time of over three years for an initial appointment. -Laser isn't appropriate for all people, and Electrologists are relatively hard to find now. So there are gaps there, and services like this can help with completing treatment once funding is spent, keeping people going while they wait for GIC appointments or NHS funding etc etc.

Why should the taxpayers have to pay for their treatment!? It’s not a free for all, the NHS is for people who are sick or have cancer, it’s not for cosmetic purposes or vanity sorry to be negative but I’ve seen my hospital struggle for funding for sick people needing treatments and our elderly trying to get home help with social care!
