Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” - John 18:38
This question is so good that I could not just skim past it without making an observation and comment. What makes this question incredible is not just the question itself but the premise behind it and the man who asked it.
Jesus just told Pilate he was a witness to the Truth and the messenger of Truth. But Pilate responds almost in disbelief that the truth exists. His life has been spent in leadership, government, and politics, where power, influence, and agendas collide. The constant temptation to manipulate or obscure the truth for personal or partisan gain is always strong. And while religious and political leaders claim to be interested in truth, their actions always reveal the real story about their heart's desires. And I am sure that Pilate had seen the worst of the worst. So, his response is one of disbelief.
We live in a time of disbelief. We are entertained by untruths while the truth is ignored, dismissed, and canceled. For a while, we have been entertained by our disbelief. But now we are exhausted by all the lies. We assumed for too long that people cared about knowing, seeking, and sharing the truth. Now, we live in another reality. We question everything spoken by pastors, politicians, power players, and media personalities. People invent a truth, call it truth, and then demand we fall in line with this truth.
And there is only one hope. We need transcendent truth. Truth that is not corrupted by this world. Truth from another place, another kingdom, and another man. And that truth is in this book and delivered by the man - Jesus. This is what Jesus told Pilate here:
“My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” - John 18:36
Two things you can do. First, stop exposing your minds to hours of untruths told television and social media. Turn that crap off. Take a fast from it. I promise you will feel better. You will realize you don't need it. Second, start a counter-action. Seek truth. And remember, the only place to find it is in God's Word. It's transcendent.
ASK THIS:
In a world filled with skepticism and disbelief, how can you personally align your life more with the transcendent truth that Jesus represents?
What practical steps can you take to seek and embrace God's transcendent truth in your daily life, especially in a culture saturated with misinformation and untruths?
DO THIS: Seek transcendent truth. Turn off the news and social media. Read God's Word.
PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to anchor my life in Your transcendent truth, just as Jesus did when facing doubt and disbelief. Guide my steps as I seek Your Word and strive to live in alignment with Your eternal wisdom. Amen.
PLAY THIS: The Truth.
