I misspoke...this would have been originally paired with a LATE SBA alto.

Dale…I have a 1950 44xxx SBA alto that I have had for 20 years. I want to get a piece as close as I can to what was issued with it. Is that an Airflow or Soloist? What do you think?

How does it play compared to the later Soloist? Can it project?

In truth, I have trouble with ANY soloist with projection when compared with a large chamber and/or higher baffle mouthpiece. I will say the sound is more complex and I feel a lot more connection with the blow-through experience

Thank you for responding to my question! I have a later Soloist that I had opened up to an E (.078) and it's a nice player. It projects well, not like a Meyer/Link, but nice sound. I seen one, larger chamber, on reverb and I was curious if it was more free blowing than the later models. It sounds like it is? Thanks again!!

@@pbnj4lyfe298 I very much so feel it is more free-blowing! SO much moreso, in fact, that I used to have an original E with the later chamber (that was faced to the same tip, but with a better curve, for me) but it STILL felt tight compared to this one...which was a C, if I believe, if not C*. Now, one thing to consider in all of this is I'm a clarinet player, so I know how to deal with smaller tips (although my main tenor piece is a 7*, same with bari and on alto my two mains are .073 and .079...so, even though I can make smaller tips work, I still have an ideal for me that is similar to many others). Yes, I almost couldn't get any focus out of this one! I really should have had someone open it up, it would have been similar to, say, a Gregory, or an earlier Meyer Bros (in ways). I definitely think that reverb one sounds like a good investment! Have you ever tried any of the airflow pieces? Pre-short shank? I would say it's a cross between one of those and a long shank...which is what a lot of people describe a horseshoe Short shank to be, so take that with a grain of salt!

I've played on a large chamber "Airflow" and it was a nice mp, but It really didn't jive with me, I should've had it opened up. I really wanted to try the smaller chamber one. Might of been a cice combo. Definitely something to consider, since I already have a later model Soloist, and it's a D tip opening.. so maybe I won't need to send it to be refaced. Anyway, Thanks again I totally appreciate your feedback!!

@@pbnj4lyfe298 The only Airflow I've had any mileage on is the tight, Larry Teal-style chamber. Apparently that's what Don Sinta played for a while. Definitely kind of a Desmond thing in the smaller tips. That's the Airflow I was comparing to, so I apologize you don't have that data point. The large chamber airflows are...well I just fall through them. I don't have any core to the sound. Sorry to write so much! Good luck with the quest!
