While reading Cormac McCarthy's fabulous book, All the Pretty Horses, a passage triggered a childhood memory. This is a great example of the power of reading. Here is the story. Hope you enjoy the short video.

Enjoyed not only the story but the telling of the story. I’m glad this scar holds beautiful memories for you. I think the scars of the soul linger longer than physical scars. Thank you.

Thank you, Richard. Your last statement is so true. The scars of the soul do likely linger longer, perhaps never disappearing, they are however easier to hide.

Loved that story. When I was 3 in the 1950's I watched my cowboy hero Roy Roger on TV daily. One day I fell and my tooth went through my lip and I started to bleed. Since I am a hemophiliac the bleeding would not stop. After days of plasma infusions with no positive results my arms and hands were in so much pain and I cried no more needles. That day my parents said Roy Rogers sent me some of his blood and did I want it. "Oh yes," and finally the bleeding stopped. I am deeply connected to that little boy still and that experience taught me lessons I have needed throughout life.

That’s an amazing story. Your parents were obviously in tune with how to make you feel better at a very difficult time.

Such a sweet story. I loved how you could have wanted to forget that scar because it must’ve been a traumatic experience for a child, but you gave it a deeper meaning for yourself. So now when you look back at that experience you smile.

Yes, very true. Memories are fleeting and scars can be a beautiful way to reflect on the past. Thanks Ania. ❤️

I can 100% relate to feeling disconnected with my past. I moved States two times as a kid and it really does feel like a different version of me lived in each of the States. When I go back and visit its always such a surreal feeling.

I know what you mean. I remember going back to Warsaw for the first time some years after leaving and the feeling was, indeed surreal.

Nothing beats a personal story told well. Thanks. My son is now 44 but when he was twelve and in junior high school playing field hockey he got hit above the eye. He was vehement in his condemnation of the boy who raised his hockey stick above the limit but he looked forward to the scar he knew he would have. Trouble is, he didn't need stitches and the hospital closed him up with butterfly closures too skillfully applied. "Chicks did scars" he would say when people asked about the injury. And the outcome? No scar. It closed over so neatly that he never looked like a gangster as he'd hoped. 😀

That’s a great story. I remember being that age and the “chicks dig scars” statement sounds like something I would say. 😂 Thank You!

Loved your scar story! I used to have a scar on my forehead too, which also required stitches! I was chasing a friend while playing tag, and she instinctively swung a metal gate behind her to keep me back. I was close behind and unable to stop in time, so I split my forehead.😆I think my scar is completely invisible now as well. So glad you're loving All the Pretty Horses! It was my third favorite book of 2023. 🥲

We’re the invisible Scar buddies! 😂 Yes, All the Pretty Horses is beautiful; McCarthy really captures the place, time, and people. I trust 100% in his descriptions; he really transports the reader. I even enjoy his use of Spanish dialogues, it makes it feel so much more authentic. I don’t mind having to decipher it. I’ll probably finish the book tonight. 😀

Aw this really resonates! I have a scar too, on my chin, and every time I feel it I get taken right back to the moment I got it. But I too have so much trouble connecting with my past kid self, I can’t fathom that I’m the same person I was then. This is such a powerful story !!

Thank you for sharing Tusia! It is quite interesting that you feel some disconnect from your childhood. We’ll have to talk about it some point. Thanks for checking out the video and for the comment. ❤️

Thanks for sharing. I believe the big thing that keeps me connected to my childhood self, apart from scars, are the relics of pop culture. The films, stories, music, books, etc., that I took in as a child reach across the years and ask me to share them with myself and experience them all over again with fresh eyes.

Yes. That’s a great point. I was born in 1974, and it’s the 80s music that always brings me back. Also, I definitely want to revisit some of the books I read as a kid. Thank you for this comment!

I remember you told me this story couple of times. It is so heart warming and scary at the same time - little boy who loves his mom very much. I think this memory will stay with you for the rest of your life even without the scar.

Yes, the memory’s still there. However, I have not thought about it in a long time. It was the book that floated it to the surface.

Thanks! It’s been a long time since I read the Count of Monte Cristo… When I was growing up The Three Musketeers was my favorite book. I must’ve read it six or seven times. 😀
