In this video:
When the United States hosted the Olympics for the first time in 1904, the games had yet to reach the high level of competition and popularity we know today. Although athletes from countries around the world were invited to participate, the games were less about the world’s best athletes competing for medals and more about (actual) amateur athletes competing against each other.

He doesn't have any obvious challenges to overcome and didn't come in first place. I'd still love to see the movie, but the people in Hollywood wouldn't greenlight it unless it had obvious conflict. Hollywood doesn't like fun.

I find it amazing that these guys could just walk into an Olympic Event without an approving committee. Just picture a guy walking up to the starting line, the gun fires, and he runs. Then, at the end, that's when they ask him which country he's from... like they are just having a schoolyard race or something.

Bonus fact for this episode: The Brazilian team funded their trip to the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles by sailing there on a ship loaded with coffee. The ship pulled into ports in along its route, sold as much coffee as there was demand. However the team barely broke even by doing this, and when the ship at the Port of Los Angeles, they had only enough money to pay the disembarkation fee for halfl of the team (fee= $1). The ship proceeded to San Francisco, where enough money was raised for more team members to join their mates in LA, but despite this only sixty seven of the eighty two team members could disembark to compete.

And in the swimming races, the Australian team complained about their loss following several of their swimmers hitting ducks that were resident on the then-newly installed "pool" - you can see it today in front of the At Louis Art Museum. It still has ducks.

The physics of tug of war makes it not that interesting a contest. If both teams have decent grip strength and has a quick lesson on appropriate technique, the heaviest team will win. It really isn't a contest of strength at all. Not as many athletes had access to coaches who knew basic physics at that time.

I'm wondering if Stephen King ever heard about this marathon and the trials the sportsman had to endure... He has a book titled "The long walk" were youngsters walk without stopping for days, if they stop before reaching the finish line they're given "a ticket", the description of that makes it sound like a bullet to your head... The prior winner had finished the race along hallucinations so, maybe he heard of it?

What is the actual purpose of ironing your clothes? (besides the aesthetics)
@1993Shahid
@1993Shahid 7 лет назад
WZTwiggs if you mean the reason is a world-wide conspiracy to confuse me, then sure :) Jokes aside, my mom insists on ironing even socks and underwear. You know... the things that won't ever stay flat when you put them on, no matter how hard you press them against a flat surface with a hot piece of metal. So if there is no other purpose, what's the point of wasting precious time on this nonsense?? (I'm sorry, I'm too passionate about ironing)

@daisy8284

@1993Shahid
@1993Shahid 7 лет назад
Daisy don't be rude, pls. We're all cultured people here... I hope.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 7 лет назад
While there might be "wives tales" or "myths" about the matter, there's not much service for ironing clothes. Yes, to get wrinkles out aesthetically is the usual major reason. The only secondary is for those individuals who repair their own clothes. (Might explain ironing socks and such though)... In ironing, you are practically forced to examine every inch of a piece of clothing closer than if you just flopped it into a folded shape and stuffed it away in a drawer or shelf... This careful examination is a clever daily routine to find little tears and loose stitch-work so it can be remedied quickly, or to notice wear before it becomes a catastrophic fail of that piece of clothing... an issue that becomes more and more prevalent in this day and age of robotics making everything cheaper and lousier. I have heard of the myth that ironing might prolong the use of clothing, with the proper administration of starch to reduce "fuzz" and thus extend the time for threads to "lint themselves to death"... but I discount it largely on the course that the heated iron also "cooks" the material and must add to the wear by default. It might seem like an interesting debate, but the principle is very similar to putting a sheet of paper into an oven as opposed to keeping it on the kitchen table. The oven gets routinely hot enough to damage the paper, even if it's not to reach the prescribed 451F required for outright combustion, and no amount of starch is going to change it... as far as I've ever seen. In any case, your mom probably has it "programmed" into her to do it "because that's how things are done". There's a lot of "traditional" activities throughout society (ies) around the world that continue on that same grounds, regardless of otherwise justification. I've been successful at diminishing wrinkles in any set of clothes I care to hang in the bathroom when I shower (hot and steamy). No ironing, no pressing, and certainly no wasted effort or energy (I happen to love my hot showers)... So... I can only suggest a certain trepidation for your question getting answered by TIFO. :o)
