Gone are the days when only professional drummers had to worry about playing along to click tracks and metronomes. Now, even churches and cover bands use pre-recorded tracks to enhance their performances. So, playing with a click track is a requirement!
Because of the proliferation of drum machines and drum loops in modern music, the casual listener's ear has been tuned to hear what metronymic time sounds like. As a result, drummers are now held to a much higher scrutiny when it comes to playing live and recording in the studio. Trouble is, there is not a lot of great information about HOW to know whether or not you're playing in sync with a metronome or click track.
As a drummer, you know the importance of nailing the beat, bar after bar and song after song. But let's face it, playing with a metronome can be a nightmare. Whether you're a pro or a weekend warrior, it's essential to keep consistent time and generate a consistent groove that is easy for other musicians to follow. And that's where this video comes in handy.
We've all been there - trying to keep pace with the click track and failing miserably. Being unsure if you're ahead of the beat or behind it is the worst., and not knowing if you're "locked in" to the click at all can be terrifying.
In today's video, Brian is going to show you the first steps to take to improve your timing and lock in with a metronome.
So, if you want to elevate your drumming skills and ace your next gig or recording session, you need to learn how to keep consistent, grooving time. This video will help you evaluate your timing and identify where you need to improve. Don't let a pesky metronome hold you back - watch this video and start mastering the beat today!

Playing exactly spot on with a click track is one thing. But how do you actually “groove” with a click track? For example to play behind the beat, do you just hit the snare a little late after the click but keep the kick drum spot on with the click? Where do you place the hats within the beat to play behind the beat? What about fills? This is something I have not been able to find clear info on anywhere. I have been using a click track with my band for practice and live shows and it doesn’t feel good when listening back to recordings sometimes. I think there is some push and pull within a click track where the music actually feels good. I would love to see you do a video on how to groove with a click in regards to playing in front, on top and behind the beat. Thanks!

I work with my students on that exact set of skills all the time.Give me a little bit of time and I’ll see if I put together a video that can get you started heading in the right direction. (Making a 5-hour long video about it would be easy. I can talk and demonstrate that stuff all day long because I find it fun and fascinating. But making a 15-20 minute video about is the real challenge). Thanks for watching and for leaving that request! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
