OMG he was a few months younger than me! I think he was in the year after me at Melbourne University but I never met him. One of my housemates was in a class with him and found him intimidating but he was brilliant enough for that to be forgiven. So many great memories of seeing the Triffids throughout the 80s and one sad one from the mid 90s of seeing him with the Red Ponies and too drunk to perform. At the time I had the fleeting thought that he might be on the way out..... : (

On this New Years, and all that 2020 is, this song, and David, Triffids, and the past of their music, lights me. It resonates so much today. Why is there no passion like this left?

The melody line in the verses reminds me of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. The chorus is spin-chilling and very emotional!

Twice (two times) I saw the Go Betweens and the Triffids on the same night in a night club in Melbourne in the mid 80's. Even got to have a chat and beer with Robert Forster and Bob 'Bongo' Starkie (ex-Skyhooks, and owner of The Club). Heady days.
