AT LAST! My review of the new Bobber!
Again, apologies for the length of this. As ever, I try to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, trying to answer unasked questions before they happen! At least it is under 40 minutes this time!
Many thanks to Herts Triumph in Hemel Hempstead for lending me the bike and their excellent service as ever (and free coffee!).
Feel free to share, like and comment below and ask any questions that I may have not been able to preempt.
Tally Bally Ho!

Got mine (lightly-used, same tank colour with mini-apes and a tidied-up rear end). Totally happy with it. The handling is way sportier than the bike looks, and the torque makes it an absolute weapon for overtaking. Very light feeling and nimble for the weight. Might not have the top-end performance of other bikes, but on real roads that kind of power is kind of wasted. Not a track bike, not for off-roading, not even for real touring, but for anything up to 100 miles each way with fish & chips and a refuel at the turn-around, it's hard to beat.

Captain- You know I've been a M/Cist for more than 50yrs. Love "the look " of the Bobber, but- ...I MUST HAVE SADDLEBAGS & a "rear FLATBED" to carry STUFF. IF YOU'RE NOT CAREFUL, you're going to get THE SOUND of that 270° CRANK growing on me. My ancestors were from Wales. Lady Di, was my 33rd cousin. My name, is the same as her Father's. I LIKE Black rims w/stainless spokes. "Red" sent me B/D greetings from Munchen. She & PhilT know I was in Kaiserslautern, before any of the 3 of you WERE BORN. I always say, "eat a bratwurst for me." She said, "I'll eat 65 bratwursts for You." Made my day.

That's a lot of Bratwurst! The 270 IS a nice sound... Thanks for watching! ;-) TBH!

Today almost concluded with the purchase of my fifth Harley, but thanks in no small part to you and your videos I decided it was time for a change ...so in the garage now sits and 2017 Competition Green Bonneville Bobber with exactly three miles on it (I trailered it home). Hope ole McQueen is smiling down upon me! Thanks Captain, a Whiskey and your videos make for a good evening! Cheers mate!

Great review, thank you so much for sharing! Sat on one yesterday for the first time ...AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! My current bike is a 2015 BMW R1200GSA, and at 5`7" it can be a handful! Obviously for someone my size the Bobber is a breath of fresh air, it`s a small thing to be sure ...but standing flat footed while stationary inspires confidence! Would imagine this would be a great bike for a lot of women as well as beginners. Thanks again Captain, and please keep the videos coming!

I found some aluminum polish (aluminum, stainless steel, brass and chrome). Diamond Brite truck box polish. I'm in the States but you can probably find something similar in the UK. it polished out the stains or corrosion spots on my bobber covers from the salt. I had to do it a couple times to get them all out, but I am very happy with the results. I loved this review of the bobber and I am happy with my choice. Cheers!

Would love Triumph to make a retro with a triple engine. I know they did the Thunderbird 900 in the nineties but I think something like a Hurricane 900 or similar would go down a treat.

Lovely Ride and Review Old Chap! the more I see the Bobber the more I like it, I still think it's the sort of thing that should be built in a shed, lol, but I also see that it's perfect for those that want a bobber that's reliable, not homemade, and they either can't do it themselves or don't have the space too, keep up the good work buddy and RS.

You are almost at Bletchley Park on this ride ! .. I am in New England and remember fondly riding in England in the early 1970-'s .I stopped action and saw the sign for the A5 ahead and turning to Ayelsbury . It looks like great roads for riding though I remember how cold the wet air can be (Glamorganshire in January on a 67 Bonny ).Thanks for sharing your ride ..

That would be an excellent stable. Might I suggest the new Speedmaster 1200 instead of the TBird? But then you would have 3 of the same engine... Hmm... Maybe a Rocket III? ;-)

Captain Rambunctious I gulped a bit when my local Triumph dealer told me that the likely price was £13k plus and orders taken at the end of November were already looking at late August 2018 delivery! Creating demand? We will see!

What a beautiful bike! I still can't decide between the Bobber Black, the T120 and the Speedmaster. I'm leaning heavily towards the T120 because it reminds me so much of the bikes I grew up on in the 70's. But then the Thruxton-R with its bad-ass cafe racer looks intrigues me too. Hmm, tough choice. Hoping to make up my mind after a test ride or two. I do love the pipes on this much better than the pea shooters on some of the other Bonnies.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 6 лет назад
They ARE very nice pipes... The Speedmaster is probably my favourite once my knees get tired of the Thruxton position. It isn't extreme but I have a bad knee so one day I'll have to change to a position with more legroom... The bobber is the most fun but least practical. If you want to take luggage, then the bobber has a small space for a little pannier and you can always wear a backpack, but no where for a pillion if you want... So the Speedmaster with straighter bars would be the winner for me! So much fun... Watch my video of Motorbike 3 way where we ride the Tiger 800, bobber black and speedmaster and we come up with quite a lot of conclusions that might help your decisions... Thanks for watching and for the comment! TBH!

Nice video as ever sire! Looking forward to having a go on one of these myself. Shocked to hear about your engine cover corrosion issue - how can that not be covered by the warranty?? Wonder if the shiny chrome finish on my beloved T100 is prone to the same issue.....you need to get out with the ACF50 matey and pronto!!
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
TheMissendenFlyer Triumph say that the dealers are meant to tell all customers that they are bare brushed aluminium and need protecting. Most dealers don't know this... poor communication! I assumed the only bare aluminium on my thrusty was the lovely one piece aluminium head stock, but all the brushed bits including the sprocket cover and faux air intake covers are as well... Your chrome ones will be susceptible too but not as much as the brushed I've been told. Yes, ACF50 as soon as they are sorted... Thanks for watching! I look forward to your thoughts!
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
I think it's pants! Surely Triumph could have lacquered them or something (...and just to be clear, I had to give the T100 back, I don't actually own "my beloved T100" - its more a statement of affection for the class...loved that bike).....
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
Yes, and their attitude is to say that they've never been covered before so it's my problem... It's the one criticism I have of Triumph, their warranty side. Saying that, they were excellent when replacing my condensing clocks...

Rode this and quite liked it, very grin inducing though I too thought the brakes were pretty bad. My only issue is that the T120 seems to be even more bike for less money, bigger tank, dual guages, twin discs up front and it has that engine too, plus as a six footer I don't look like an ape on a circus bike.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
You're right about getting more bike with the T120 but it just wasn't as much fun! I'm 6'1 and don't think I looked too bad at all. Obviously if you get the ape hangers, then you deserve to look like that! ;-) I think that if you have no reason to carry much luggage or have a pillion, then get the Bobber as it is more fun to ride, tuned differently, and will get people talking more, for good or bad! Enjoy whatever decision you make and thank you for watching! :-)

Bobber is an American term derived from the ladies "bobbed" hair style which was a term applied to the chopped rear fender. The stripped down "bobber" bike was the garage mechanic's personal build.

Nice review. Sounds like it's made for a little taller people. I got a chance to sit on one and thought the bars were an inch or two too far forward. Bar risers would fix it. Was really surprised how low it was. That low center of gravity is probably why it's so nimble. On tighter roads, those low pegs will probably get decked a lot. No big deal really. Can be fun to throw sparks.

No worries Si! This was always going to split opinion, and even if I loved this bike (which I'm still quite indifferent about from a looks point of view) I wouldn't be upset if others hated it. It's all about how a bike makes YOU feel as an individual! Harleys ARE good for some people... I had a HOOT on the softtail slim, just wasn't for me for everyday riding, but it isn't built for that. It's just that this bike has the looks for some people but is much easier to live with... Thanks for watching! :-)

Looks good. I thought I saw in another video someone adjusting the seat on the fly, but maybe that was on a prototype. Probably would have been better served to have it slightly more back, although I cannot say. Maybe someday someone will make a two up single seat like in the old days, with some high mount pegs. That'd be a hoot. All tolled, I think it will be a good seller. Kind of a love it or hate it thing, but either way, it's all good.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
That would be cool... That's what it's all about though, making it yourself after Triumph provide you with a Bobber platform... It's already pretty much sold all of this year's quota already! No way of adjusting this on the fly, although you can adjust the angle of the clock whilst moving as long as you haven't tightened it too much... Thanks for watchign and for taking the time to comment! TBH!

Nice enough. Kinda curious about the single disk front brake, being a 1200. But i guess being a single rider bike, T figured a single disk is fine. Is the rotor larger diameter? Seat looks a bit restrictive for butt movement . I like the bar end mirrors, i bought a pair for my 2005 t, but they are so tiny, not sure they'd show much view. To bad they didn't make the baffles in the pipes removable. Course maybe that'd be too loud. I've got outbound slip ons on my bonneville T 100, and they do sound out. That seat looks just too small for that style. Maybe not though. Another thing,,,no knee pads on the tank. To me,,a Triumph just isn't,, without the pads. Looks nice though. Thanks Capt. Nice advertising 😁. I'd be curious how many sales are racked up just due to your s and your brother s in the reviewing world. You definitely sell the thrill. Ride safe,

Great review, Oh Rambunctious one! If 'herself' passes her test and ergo no longer requires an occasional perch behind my rump, I'm tempted to get one of these when I eventually tire of my T120 - no time soon then :) Re: 'the debate'... Being an old fart, I do recall that there were similar angsty howls from those who thought Kawasaki were wrong to make the Z750 LTD. Hey, it's called progress. ;-)

Ha ha! You never know, she may surprise you! :-) Yes, it IS called progress, but a lot of the sports bike brigade are concerned about the hipster direction... I think that it's more to do with really enjoying the looks and feeling a bike gives you, not just speed anymore...

Not the bike for me but it seems to go well. More than enough for the ride to a trendy coffee n muffin shop. Now I will enter into the argument "it aint a bobber because it was not built by a oily herbert in a shed" the same can be said for cafe racers, race replica's, streefighters, choppers and lowriders. Some people don't want a old clunker re-built, they want new, with a warranty, spares and repairs back up etc.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
Very true Russ, and that is also my side of the argument (owning a cafe racer replica myself of course!)... Thanks for watching! We will have to see what the majority of comments are like! So far only a few dislikes for the video. I am never sure if they aimed at me or the bike in question!

Regin Lamson ah, that’s the old raven jacket that started off a distressed black and ended up a browny grey. They do new one called the Raven 2 which should tarnish the same... from any of the Triumph dealers... Thanks for watching! Tally Bally Ho’

did wonder about the laquered ally covers. my Speedmaster forks and heayoke tarnished like your thruxton covers. spent two hours with wirewool and Solvol Autosol and problem solved, needs a quick buff every few months. 9ltr tank!!? jeez thought mine at 16ltr was a joke. Cheers
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад
Oh it's fine. It will still do 150 miles on a tank. Excellent fuel consumption, unless you are hooning it around. Then expect about 110 miles I would say... Similar to my old tuned 865 Thrusty... Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! :-)
@normanbuild
@normanbuild 7 лет назад
cant agree it will do 150 miles on 9 ltrs unless its been driven like a moped, anyway thanks for replying. after watching this I steamed down to the dealers. thought it looked cheap and felt it was an opportunistic marketing gimmick . I think I'll stick with the Speedmaster even though it uses 11 litres to do 150 miles on its 865cc engine.

Absolutely. As I mentioned elsewhere, my arthritic hips and knees mean I need a taller seat to stretch my legs to the peddles, but having demo'd the T120 down that road from the good folk at Pure Triumph in Woburn I can understand how hard it is to resist. The engine is superb.
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 7 лет назад

@richbryce5006
@richbryce5006 7 лет назад
Yes, I sat on the Scrambler at the launch, and since, and just love it, but no demo bikes atm. Anyway, I've decided to keep the Street Twin and scramblerise it - bench seat, high V&H pipes, after market tail tidy etc. So seat somewhere between stock ST and Street Scrambler. Let's be honest, the 900 engine is a peach too and more than capable on our twisties. Come on sun. Time to get off my Tiger :)

I love the Triumph Bobber but damn, it is geared too high. Shifting to 5th gear (@4500 RPM) is 154 km/h. Shifting to 6th gear (@4500 RPM) is 171 km/h. Except for the track, where can you ride that fast?
@CaptainRambunctious
@CaptainRambunctious 9 месяцев назад
I take your point, but also, I find I’m changing too much anyway… and first has acceleration in under 5 seconds anyway… so any shorter hearing and you’d be changing too much!! I have to admit to going in to triple figures of mph quite often on my Speedmaster so the gearing is fine for me…
