I would not pull the lever. First of all, its not the guys fault he is alone. Second, I could be prosecuted with man slaughter. Third, the people on the track are together, so they would have some connection to each other. It would be cruel to make someone die alone just because of their unfortunate circumstances.
I remember watching a short video from a lawyer, which basically said that you have no right to deprive other people of their lives. If you don't pull the lever, then it is the railway department's responsibility, but if you pull the lever, then it becomes your responsibility.

It's easy , I can save 9 people's life from all the 11 people (excluding the surgeon) 1. I will pull the liver so that I can save those 5 people from the track . 2. Then I would select 1 random from those saved 5 people to save the 5 patients. 3. So in the end , I saved those 5 patients + (5-1) people from the train track = 9 people .
Apparently, some people choose not to pull the lever because the train would go past the path it was originally on: which means you were literally uninvolved in the situation, because you did nothing.

Answering philosophical questions with some legal concepts helps a lot. So when you try to save 5 over 1 in a railway track, you can use the defence of necessity to escape any punishment. But in case of doctor killing one to save five is considered, he would be guilty of murder. This is with regards to principle set down in R vs. Dudley & Stephens where few persons stranded on a island killed and ate a boy for themselves to stay alive. The Court held they were guilty of murder and stated that even in life-threatening situations, one cannot take the life of another by saving their own. This principle is applicable to doctor's case where the doctor could have sacrificed his own organs to save the five, but chose to kill a person by saving his own. Thus he committed murder. But incase of the railway incident, the person is not guilty because he had no option but to make a choice, and chose 5 people over 1 by applying the utilitarian principle. He didn't choose his life over others and the principle in R vs. Dudley & Stephens does not apply.
This would still be murder, because the train track was in the direction of the five. Its was not an option. He decided to intervene willingly. He purposely made the train pass over someone who wouldn't be killed by it. He was not forced to make a choice as you are trying to state here, there was no "necessity". Its muder.
Plot twist: He pulled the leveller and saved 5 lives by taking one life. All of a sudden another train came from the opposite direction and killed them instantly on impact.
It doesn't justify it however it does reduce the guilt you might feel but in the end it's never easy knowing that someone had to die in order to save other.
Some people have who are more inclined to deontological ethics. Though the problem is flawed at providing indefinite answers given that it is too unusual for a scenario that can be applied to other scenarios, hence why most opt for the utilitarian choice.
That's the altered version of the trolley problem. Most people would choose to save the many at the expense of the few, so they make it more complicated by adding selfishness into it. It's a bit more of a 50/50 chance now, but I think most people would just let those 5 die.
Well we're comparing between one person who isn't free and is tied down and one who is completely free. The train is unstoppable. We are stoppable. That's why the doctor dilemma feels wrong and the train dilemma feels more morally justifiable.
You are not entirely correct tho. If the trolley is an unstoppable force, so is death that awaits 5 patients. You as a surgeon aren't really the one harming the 5 people tho, so that's probably why the trolley problem feels different 😅

In the trolley problem, either case will inevitably happen imminently, The single healthy ‘doner’ wouldn't be imminently dying; therefore, it would be unethical to take one life to save 5, but with the train, it's almost inevitable that it'll hit someone, so from a utilitarian pov, you have to switch the tracks but not kill a doner.

Meanwhile the organs thing is exactly the kind of scenario that the trolley is a metaphor for. Of course, you could discuss the broader implications, for example, you kill a guy and use his organs to save 5 people (and probably improve the lives of a dozen more, since there are non-vital organs that can be donated too, like corneas) but besides killing a guy, you also completely destroy trust in hospitals because, did they kill a guy that came for a different, minor ailment?

The two situations are incomparable. In the train situation you weren’t the one that tied the people there, you’re simply an observer. Whereas in the surgeon situation, you yourself will be the direct reason for taking a perfectly healthy person’s life.

The whole idea “to do no harm” would prevent the surgeon from harvesting the origin. For example by harvesting the organs the surgeon directly harms the man, but to leave the 5 patients he is not the direct cause of the harm

The thing is human lives cannot be measured by other, you can't say 5 lives is more valuable than one and because in fact telling whether one live is more valuable another is impossible, and prioritizing live by their value is already something isn't morally right

Ok, realistically (as a train nerd) if a train was going that fast it would tilt over on the curve and derail and land in between the two railroad lines, But since a trolley usually carries 10-30 people, it turning at that speed and crashing would end many lives, and if it was a train depicted in the video carrying coaches, if it derailed, it would kill about 50-125 people, so if you didn’t pull the lever it would only end 5 lives instead of 10-125 lives.
What about detaching the engine from the rest train. And titling it to one side. So that when the lever is pulled the engine will divert to one person track but bcs of sudden torque(?)/force. It derails from track due to weight and as the tilt is deliberately done on empty filed ( phones right side ). It doesn't reach to the single guy. So saving all 3 parties. Passanger, the five and 1 on track. 🤔
Btw I just realized I can just pull the lever when the train is still far and run to untie the 1 guy who is in the path. 😂 I guess it will be easier to untie one and as he is also near for me.
It's just a matter of whatever the lesser of two evils is. If you're forced to choose, it's better to save the lives of many at the cost of the unlucky few. That doesn't mean you can like it feel good about your decision. It's normal to just want to save everyone.
