Misha Osherovich shares the downsides of having parents who fled from Russia, not knowing what gay means until you’re 9, getting kicked out of two public high schools in one year, being thrown into the troubled teen industry, going straight from that to musical theater college, and coming out as non-binary during a global pandemic.

Fun fact, liking or hating cilantro is genetic. Some people have a gene where it tastes like a strong parsley. Some people have a gene where it tastes like soap. I got the soap gene.

Is there one for Basil? I can't stand it. I'd rather starve. It tastes like rotten mint leaves to me.

Yeah my mum makes stuff with cilantro for the whole family, everyone else is fine but I can't handle it. So she makes it all the same up until she adds cilantro, separates my portion into a seperate pan then goes on as usual 💀

I got the other gene, I lovelovelove cilantro, it adds a peppery, dynamic, fresh, exciting flavour to food when it's fresh, like how garlic is if instead of its garlicky garlicness it was slightly peppery and fresh.

Child of immigrant Jews from Cuba. Totally weird to hear them describe their childhood as identical to mine. One of my siblings reacted the way they did, asserting control over their life via rebellion. I tried to conform as much as possible since the negative reactions from my parents and community were waaaay too much to bare. I regret so much of that time since the way my sibling and I coped with the toxic and abusive environment resulted in us wounding each other. Edit: edited pronouns

Great interview! Wtf?! They went straight from the phsyc ward to TTI? That’s horrible. 💔 Misha is such a brave, brilliant human. You can see they suffer from PTSD, from that terrible TTI place. Brave of them to speak about it. Also I went to Interlochen and I had a mental breakdown from scary musical theater kids not to mention the teacher, so @Gianmarco it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

The googling got me, I looked up my "Theraputic Boarding School". They now have multiple pending lawsuits and changed their name. BTW they charged 45k per year. I wonder if healing is their priority.

Love these podcasts, like someone said TEN MONTHS AGO I'm surprised you haven't popped off yet, it's a bit eerie that this podcast is so good without 100,000 views per episode. But I love it, I feel like it opens my mind and broadens my experiences and feel close to strangers I don't know. Makes me feel more human and it's a hilarious podcast too :) x

You know when they first talked about being an annoying person with all kinds of food preference choices I was kind of annoyed at them but then they got into all the eating disorder stuff I realized how much of an idiot I was for assuming they were just being trendy and annoying. I even have an ex who I'm on good terms with who has had a very similar relationship with food. Thanks for reminding me to be more aware of my mindset there.

Ftr, the idea of being constantly "in recovery" is very much in line with AA/NA philosophy. Anyone who thinks they are no longer at risk of their unhealthy addictions is, in fact, the most at risk of relapse.

33:00 ish Trouble Teen Industry Full disclosure, I do not know enough details to violate HIPAA, nor come close. My parent works in child protection and one of their "kids" that has "behavioral issues" is at a "treatment center" in Utah, deductive reasoning leads straight to this industry. I try to educate my parent on the horrors of these places; of course they can't tell me the name so I can't look into it. I wish I could tell the "kid" that your social-worker's daughter in the Midwest is thinking of them and trying to advocate for them...whoever they are.
@Fairygoblet

I bet you are helping them more than you think. Even if your parent can't give you any info, they likely have the relevant info themselves to piece things together and your additional information probably helped them. You seem like a really caring person, I hope that your efforts pay off right along with you.

About at 28:00 isn't it always like that? The sound may be quiet for years and all of a sudden something changes and it comes back.. it's everyones own choice do you act on it after you have lived "eating disprderless"life how ever long you have been, but at least I'm always little afraid it comes back, even if it hasn't been there for years.. like addiction, it doesn't go away just like that, it just may be quiet and only difference is if you start to listen it or not, just like with alcohol or drugs..

Also soviet Russia was not an “anti-world” project lol. Ofc your parents were zionists and they’re against the ussr. There’s a demographic here. Communists are not anti Semitic, we don’t support the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. It’s not about religion, it’s about settler colonialism.

Ethnic cleansing and cultural erasion via colonialism were very much a thing. Banning language, religion, and cultural practices... FFS my mum had to take atheist exam to get into uni 🙃 Russians came and occupied your own country and tried to erase all of its history and claim it to be theirs, they certainly did it by force and with a lot of human suffering. Anyone influential would often be offed eventually as they were seen as dangerous to their goals of taking over. So someone like a scientist would very much be targeted.
@avorotcivanin
@avorotcivanin Год назад
@@Cccc123c33 the USSR was not “Russian”, in fact the ruling elite were overwhelmingly Jewish, Stalin was Georgian etc, and the USSR murdered and targeted ethnic Russians. It’s estimated they murdered 20mil ethnic Russians. Also, what languages and cultural practices were banned? All of Russians minorities have retained their languages and customs. Our native populations in Siberia are more in number today than when they were originally absorbed into the Empire, not to mention their languages are mandatory subjects in schools where their population is large enough. The problem now is that the youth is leaving to the cities and abandoning their traditions (this is happening world wide). Yes, the USSR was atheist and prosecuted religions, because the government was to be the religion. Again, nothing to do with Russia and Russians. During the Imperial period everyone was free to practice their religion and it was multiethnic. This is the case today. Someone like a scientist would very much be targeted? That’s the most ridiculous statement. Science and academics were heavily praised and valued. Why would the USSR target scientists when they were so needed? USSR has insane scientific achievement so how would scientists be targeted? Anyone who was against the government was targeted, nothing to do with their profession, and everything to do with an authoritarian regime maintaining control.
@brennam954

Dude, you can be a communist while still being critical of the USSR. Those things are not mutually exclusive. The fact that you say "we" as if your brand of communism is 100% identical to the "communism" practiced in the USSR is really unimaginative. There are things to celebrate in the USSR (particularly given their historical past and their ostracization from the West) and there is also MUCH to criticize. Don't be a tankie.
