Our grandparent cars didn’t have airbags or antilock breaks, but that doesn’t mean It’s cool or run around without them. They also rolled over and did tricks like throw their passenger out the window, but again, not something I’d be nostalgic about.
Obligatory - “Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet?” Owning an 80 series will be an obsession for some time to come, as it steals away your thoughts with maintenance items, upgrades, and dreams of epic trips and trails. I love the FJ 80’s TOYOTA badge on the grille. It’s an absolute icon. Keep the content coming!!!
Lethargic power windows, inoperable power seats, droopy sun visors, questionable head gaskets, saggy seat nets, weak parking brake, peeling clear coat, leaky sunroof, burnt antenna motor You’re going to love it.
Add to that list the ticking timebomb under the dash. Judging by the state of the hoses, the heater core will soon be leaking & he will love pulling the dash to replace it..
Which is why the FJ 55 kept to manual windows, very few power things to wear out. No power locks, roll up windows, no power seats, no power brakes or steering.
Im gonna add PHH on FZJ80 (if I ever meet the designer of that nightmare Im going to punch him in the face), faux wood accents, fender flares, and fuel milage....but it will likely be the last vehicle I ever own. Im gonna drive it til they stop making parts or I die....
Man, you hit everything that I wish I knew before I bought mine. Your videos are awesome and they’ve motivated me to get to work on mine. Thanks from a fellow FJ80 owner in Mississippi!!
My son just purchased a ‘97 Land Cruiser. Your videos will be very helpful. Thank you so much and please keep doing what you do. We built a 66 mustang together and I am looking forward to working on this new project. We will use you as a resource. Thanks again.
“Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet?” I’m so glad you started making these videos, I just bought an fj80 last weekend and have been discovering many of the same things. I’m looking forward to your future videos!
“Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet?” - Awesome videos! Thanks so much for the info. From South Africa and Driving a 97 1HD FT 80. She is awesome but needs more attention than your girl before a 2 week hunting trip with the boys! Keep it up
New 80 series owner here and I couldn’t agree more. Maintenance is number one on my list, I won’t bother with any “bling” until all baseline maintenance has been done. I have a HDJ81 with the diesel 1-HDT engine. I wish there were more diesel videos out there. I have all of the maintenance manuals in English which is very helpful.
I’m rockin a 98 4runner and Timmy the tool man has literally a video for every possible maintenance/fix on the truck. Someone’s gotta do the same for the land cruiser. Cause I pretty much fully restored my truck using his videos.
I'm a truck driver who's only own a sedan my whole life. Thanks for your vid but all the problems you've listed are super super minor for us oldies. What will really get us worried will be problems/common issues with the engine, gearbox (especially the autos, been driving manual all my life and getting tired of it) axle or common electricals. I am from south east asia where it's hot and rainy all year long and planning to get myself 1 80 series soon. Reason is just love it and the size advantage on the road. So now looking at every available vid online about it. Thanks and i enjoyed your vid bro. Have a nice day
“Have you rebuilt you knuckles yet?” Awesome work on the videos, though I have a '93 i know most of the maintenance videos will still be hugely useful. Thanks!
"Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet?" Thanks for the videos! Also have a '91 and appreciate the work you're doing. Any chance you're looking at the A/C system soon?
Good luck man. I had been hunting 3rd gen 4runners for a long long time sort of like you with the 80 series. Never quite got my hands on one still, but few months back I purchased a 100 series. Been a ton of work on baseline maintenance, but well worth it. I love the 80series, and often wish I had the 80 haha. Good luck and hope you are able to pick one up.
Id gladly accept cup holders for my cruiser… I’ve literally spends all night watching your 80!videos.. good job on your editing and helping the 80 community with tips and tricks… :) congrats…
Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet? I did mine last year & the OTRAMM video on it saved me. I sub’d & have been binge watching all your vids. They’ve reminded me of lots of little things I still need to do to my 92 that I’ve had for over 6 years as my daily driver. Keep pumping out the vids man!
A good friend of mine gave me a 1996 Lexus LX450 F R E E !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 1996 4Runner 4X4 that was on its way to the scrap yard that I bought for $500.00 and I rebuilt/restored it to like new. I have a 2000 2X4 4Runner. I cannot wait to restore the 450. I am sure I will never have to buy another car or ever have to make another car payment the rest of my life and they all go up in value every year!!! I have a1994 F250 4X4 and a 2000 Lincoln Town Car Cartier so I guess the Lexus will make a "full house". We am so blessed.
No offense, I have to chuckle 🤣. I understand you frustration with those nigly little things that are bugging you. But they are easily overcome. Keep your channel focused on your ongoing maintenance process. This will be the most valuable time you spend with your truck and for the viewers. I'm a PO of a 77 FJ40 Landcruiser and now have a 02 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 3.5L AWD. There is very little 🤏 to nothing on the Tube related to this vehicle also 🤦♂️🥺😫. I was shopping for a 80 series when I found the Spot. Good luck 👍and hang in there. Cheers 🍻, G.
I bought my 96 land cruiser in 2013 still use it as a daily driver today and love it pulls my boat to the lake I used to live in it for two years never worried about visors or drink holders and yes it does not have smart phone chargers when it was built these things did not exist if you need that junk I’d suggest another vehicle but if you want do anything dependability this vehicle beats any of the new junk any day
I own an 87 FJ60, but there always things that will wear out, need replacement parts, etc, on any older vehicles. No cup holder or phone charger is fine. It’s hard to do all sorts of things while your driving a 4 speed, and shifting gears.
Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet? Almost sold my FZFJ80 and then I found your channel. Made me appreciate what I had and smiles per miles is definitely a thing!
Thanks for sharing, planning on buying fj80 92 need all all those great tips and info on maintenance its 8500$ the fzj80 is 15000$ hoping for more videos thanks again nino
I have two four runners. and I agree about the knuckles. You have to remove this then that then this screw to take that out. That was headlight bulbs. Your knuckle are bleeding from taking off the headlight bulb.
A tuffy console solved my addiction for hydration in my 60. I need to rebuild my knuckles also and have been putting it off so hoping you’ll motivate me by making it look easy! Ps same visor issue in my 1984 also… and no cup holders in 60series either
Cup holders? There are 3 OEM cup holders - under the ashtray, on the middle console and on the side of the console on the drivers side. You can also buy a used cup holder from other cars and install it on the center console on the passenger side. Sun visor is missing the plastic cylinder which holds it up once clicked into the holder. You can add something to it so it can hold up the visor. I still have them on my visors and they work perfectly. Phone charger? Amazon has a ton of phone charger adapters for car cigarette lighter. Maintenance videos? Ih8mud is a very good source and also RU-vid. Rear AC? They were included in models in Japan and those sent to the Middle East as well as Australia.
In Australia. The 1990 92 Sahara has rear aircon and decent visors. Mine has a entire seperate aircondition built on ntor the rear panel between card and skin on the oppersite side to where the jack is.
based on what you know now, what would be a good price to pay for a LC80 series? I'm on the market for one, but I'm just curious to hear what you have to say about that. Thanks.
Good video and agreed on these and have gotten the cup holders off Etsy and there pretty good. Side note, no I have not rebuilt the knuckles and I installed a new radio with apple car play and added a rear view camera. Happy to connect and discuss if that’s something you want to do. I do have a few videos I’m hoping to post soon on that. Thank you
Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet? I actually though this was a common issue among fJ80 when I read the comments before watching your video! Lol... I just got one in my country (a 2002 model, they kept making it up until 2008) and I do need to do some maintenance for the knuckles so I got a bit scared.
Hey you can actually buy cup holders with wallet and celphone holders all in one. I just double sided taped mine just in front of the cooler, left of your shifting knob and just barely touching your RIGHT leg when driving. Love from the Philippines bro.
Oz cruiser had rear a/c Sahara and fridge glovebox the best 4x4 it had everything that opened and shut way infront of competition Range Rover was high up in the luxury end as well
I am thinking about buying one with 95000km on it from 91. Needs some body work but thats doable. How is the automatic transmission holding up? Any problems I should look for. This one has pulled big trailers of 3500 kg (maybe more, but rated for that and has a big tow hook.)
Bought my 80 series a year ago for 5,200 Aud previous owner has neglected it and now I have rebuilt the motor from ground up cost 10,500 for the build and now runs like brand new also spent about 10 plus on accessories and still has more to go such a big money car but wouldn't have it any other way
Great video. You must be a millennium. lol. NO PLUG in for your phone... and cup holders. in early 90s between your legs or hands were our cup holders. You make killer vids man. ..keep them.coming
Bro I went through the same thing when I got mine. I ended selling it because it turned out to be a money pit. You need at least 10k extra to get everything refreshed. The gas mileage was terrible. You need a shop with lift you want to work in it yourself. I found that that truck wasn’t for me. I ended up getting a 4Runner instead. I’m much happier with it
The US is not the only country in the world. The rest of the world can actually operate without cup holders😁. In South Africa we usually put the beer between our legs, right up against the nut hut, helps keep them cool too😁
Did you do your knuckles yet love your videos very helpful I have 1997 lexus lx450 love my truck I'm in Guatemala 🇬🇹 central America I've had my truck for 7years now love my truck
Have u rebuilt your knuckles yet Great vids,I have a 94 1fz, upgrade from the old 84 fj60 of previous 20 years Miss driving the 60 but have to love the comfort of the 80
I definitely recommend to check the nuts underground the housing. This is a common issue on the 80 series. I actually had to rebuild the front axle due of nuts losing with the usage. I went to a LC forum and they recommend to check that often.
HAVE YOU REBUILT YOUR KNUCKLES YET? (I know I'm too late, but maybe I can buy the cup holders from you). ..... I have a 91 Land Cruiser. I need to fix it up. I'm gonna be checking your videos out for sure. I have a question, tho: Some of the pieces I need to replace are plastic. Would it be possible to 3D print those? Like the plastic ring around the key ignition. And the plastic... runner... whatever it's called... that helps the middle glove compartment slide up and down. Also, the handle for the back door (the one that rotates clockwise). Could you 3D print those? If so, I'd pay you for it.
@Lndcruzin that switch that says rear heat on or off, vents cold air out the rear bottom of my center console towards rear passengers when I have the ac on, I just flick that switch on and it blows a decent amount of cold air up at them, don't know if it's supposed to do that or If something is broken but worth a try on your 80 series
I just double checked to be sure and yeah just click rear heat on high with the ac on full blast and it should vent cold air from the back of the center console you can put your hand on the vent behind and feel it coming up
Have you rebuilt your knuckles yet? Mine's a '95. Replaced the rear hatch struts with OEM and I smiled for a week after I put it up half way and it raised itself up to fully open!
Unless you really truly know that you will never ever use a 12v cig accessory (like off-road GPS, a fridge, etc) then it's a mistake to rewire the cig port in the dash to have a USB connection. You can purchase a cig port to twin USB adaptor for $4AUD, so probably somewhere closer to $1.50USD. That gives you USB to charge USB devices without having to rewire anything or sacrifice the utility of the cig port. If you really want a USB only charge port, wire it into the centre console. Cup holders were a higher trim in the early to mid 90s. I'm not sure why you'd get upset about not having them. They're an easy. quick, cheap aftermarket install. It's a weird thing to regret. Any good auto shop or 4WD centre will be able to provide you a selection of aftermarket cup holders if they're that important to you. You'll find a cupholder is near useless on corrugations. No rear ac is an important one for families considering buying, because reducting to add in rear ac is expensive
I own a FZJ80. Cigarette plug straight up you can plug phone charger . I have rear AC. Power antenna. Power window. Power door lock. Third row seat. Sun roof. It depends on the model. I wish i have electronic lockers and part time 4wd just like my previous diesel version.. 95 up model has decent cup holder above the radio
I've seen a number of your videos... like them all, but.. when are you getting to really deep cleaning the Cruiser, both inside and out... think your car may be better than what it looks like and a major valet will also help to identify issues apart from soothing your soul
I would ask if you've rebuilt your knuckle is yet but I've already bought ALL the cup holders from BH3DPrinting. I am a fan and would buy them again in a heart beat
Some of it I just find amusing likelack of a phone charger, cup holders, and people needing to know to budget for maintenance. On top of that, lack of maintenance videos and and need for budgeting for repairs can be so much worse on other vehicles, so it isn't nearly as bad as it could be.
I'm thinking of asking my grandpa to buy me a 91 Land Cruiser. Is it really a bad idea? The one I'm looking at only has 119,000 miles and has been well kept and has no mechanical issues.
