The True Meaning of Jesus Washing The Disciples' Feet

This is one of my favorite Bible passages. I still remember when I was reading it and trying to figure out what sort of special meaning there was behind the actions of Jesus, and it hit me. I'm excited to get to share it with you. I'm not the first to discover this but it sure is a wonderful discovery! Today's study is from John 13, where Jesus humbles himself and washes the disciples' feet.

@@melz3671 God often worked through his people. The bible says faith without works is dead. Imagine if we all quit our jobs and just prayed for our housing and food. Now imagine if we do no works to stop evil people. * The election was obviously stolen by RINO judges who teamed with Democrat judges to not hear any of the 80 or so cases of election cheating. Massive cheating happened, including corrupted voting machine software. We have criminals running our nation now. When Jesus saw money changers working at the temple, he tipped over their tables and flogged them. The bible says those fake Roos (

I always wondered if Jesus washed Judas’ feet. Even after he knew Satan had changed his heart to betray Him. To even wash the feet of his betrayer shows His love. Thanks for this video Mike ! I have learned so much from you.

Isn't it so beautiful. I mean Jesus knew Judas would betray him and he still gave him a kiss on the cheek (the way Judas would betray Him). Jesus's love for us is so undeliverable and being reminded of these little things in the Bible is so refreshing. It makes me fall on my knees and just worship my God because He saved us from all our sin

Jason - I was typing my comment and glanced down and saw you had already addressed the very issue I was going to comment on. It's a question that - if we stop and really think about it - leads to a whole steam of questions about the symbolism of Christ washing his betrayer's feet. Was it symbolizing that he was forgiving Judas for what he was about to do? I'd llove to hear Mike's thoughts on the subject. It reminds me that I am to forgive the "sins"/wrongdoings of others that hurt me - even if they continue to do it. I admit, that's very difficult for me to do and something I need to pray about and work on.

@@Robin-sf3gk I always felt sorry for Judas. He was preordained to betray Christ. He had no free will. He had to do it. Here was a man who gave up everything to follow and learn from Jesus for 3 years. He believed because he went out with the other deciples and preached and performed miracles (when Jesus sent them 2 by 2). But he was chosen to be the one to turn Jesus over to the priests. So - could he have sought forgiveness for this act? Did he have the ability to not do it? He was obviously sorry - he killed himself. So is Judas in hell? He HAD to do it to fulfill prophecy and cause Christ's capture and death. Could he have repented? Is his soul damned to hell beause he was used to fufill the plan? If he had no free will ..... did he ever have the ability to refuse to do it? So many questions. I don't think God creates some people to go to heaven and others to go to hell. We ALL have the abbility to choose. But, that choice was taken away from Judas. He was a pawn in the plan. That really bothers me. It doesn't seem to fit.

I just want to say how much of a blessing your teaching has been in my life. I want to ask for prayers for our small church due to COVID our attendance has drop to around 10. I just pray that we can continue to do Gods will in our community. Please keep sharing what the Lord has laid on your heart.

I used to go to a Mennonite church that had a yearly "full-communion", meaning communion, foot-washing, and pot-luck dinner (Love Feast). Another woman and I would agree to wash each other's feet, to avoid embarrassment, and it was a good experience. It's very intimate and humbling, as someone has to work on your ugly toes! A good image of servanthood.

wow God spoke to me through you! ive been harboring bitterness and unforgiveness towards my dad and it’s been something constantly on my mind recently. today’s video was beautiful and it’s just so incredible that God hears our prayers and uses all his vessels to answer those prayers and work in the coolest ways! have faith and keep praying!

I always felt this was to humble ourselves as Christ humbled himself. I was raised in a church where we washed feet ( after taking communion) and it was, to me, so humbling, and made do a self check.

Thank you for this!!! You brought up a good point at the end where you spoke about how the first churches had church functions and that washing feet was not included. I will continue to wash feet, not as a salvation issue, but as a way to continue fellowship with our church members. To anyone that doesnt wash feet, I encourage you to give it a try! It's so humbling and a way to show love to your sisters in Christ (or brothers).

@@samone1382 hello brother. Yes we are not to judge outsiders or judge willy nilly. But the Bible is clear that there is a time when we judge those inside the church. Mike has taught about that as well. Now it is with righteous judgement to protect the holiness of God's people and not over silly things but for instance if there is an unrepentant adulterer in the church we are to judge that and excommunicated them (this is done to bring them to repentance). Here are some verses. *"For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” -1 Corinth 5:12-13 *"Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” John 7:24 *"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector." Matt 18:15-17 * "It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing." 1 Corinthians 5:1-3 -in order to expel someone from the church there first has to be righteous judgement. I just wanted to clear it up because many think Christians are to NEVER judge. But the Bible says we are not to judge non Christians but we are to judge other Christians with holy righteous judgement to protect the church and help bring that person to repentance. Now it's done with a very serious heart but it is to be when the time calls for it. God bless.

I grew up in a church that took communion several times a year and would then wash feet once a year or so. The men and women would separate, take communion and then bring out basins and linens and wash each other’s feet. There would be singing and preaching going on at the same time, it was a small church, about 75-100 folks, and around 75% of us were related, lol, but those were some special services and memories. It was so humbling, it was so much harder to have your feet washed than it was to wash another’s feet. We would all be in tears, men and women. Idk if if’s one of those things we’re “supposed” to do, I just know it is an unforgettable experience. It brings you very close as a congregation, and makes you feel close to God.

Jesus’ love was narrated: verse 1 “he loved them” It was taught: verses 5-12 - washing the feed It was commanded: verse 34 “love one another” It was demonstrated: on the cross

Ok this is CRAZY! These last two weeks at my church their theme is based on John 13 - robes and towels. And you just happen to stray from Mark and do a teaching on this passage in al the bible. Wow! Praise God. Also literally just watched the episodes from Remnant Radio with Dean Davis on end times - mind blowing stuff Mike I think this would be super useful for you leading up to next week and your survey of end times views. Amazing how well his view flows!

Brother.. I was brought to a deep dive of this event King Jesus did. If I were raising my sons with what I know now, what a great way to teach this to your children every day in the evening of their days journey and experience. Shake the dust and wash their feet and set an atmosphere of forgiveness and remembrance of our Savior.

My daughter and I are in dwelt by the Holy Spirit, so Jesus lives in us. He is Lord over our lives. Recently we all fell very sick after the Lord led me to anoint our home. I was sitting on the couch with our daughter and my Bible in total agony and anxiety. I opened up the Bible on this passage and I felt the Holy Spirit lead me to wash each others feet. I said to her, if Jesus lives in you and I then Jesus will wash our feet. So we filled the bathtub foot level with some Espom salts and we washed and dried each other feet. The congestion immediately broke and I felt such deep peace and comfort rush into me. I think it’s a very beautiful symbolic thing to do and it was also very healing for my mind and body and spirit. I feel with all my heart Jesus did this so they wouldn’t all fall apart during the traumatic events that were to take place. He did this to put peace and love in their hearts. He honors our love for Him. Don’t just read the Bible, do what it says.

Thanks Mike, just what I needed when I needed it. I felt like I'd been walking close to the Lord and recently out of the blue an old enemy tripped me up. Thought I'd defeated pornography years back but I fell one m'ore time. I couldn't pray, couldn't do anything but feel unworthy, a fraud and dirty. I needed to hear I am clean cause I sure haven't been feeling like it. Praise God the one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet. Thanks for the word. Churches have been doing the, 'foot washing show' for years, and I will get up and walk out every time. The foreshadowing in the Bible is deep, and if you only read and interpret from today's perspective, you are missing out on so much. Jesus was clearly removing all of the dirt(sin) from the disciples feet, indicating his future taking on the sins of us all. Thanks Mike, for bringing the deeper meaning of this scripture to light. I've taught this for 20 years, and have been told that I was wrong, that it's only about taking care of each other.

I was listening pretty good until you said that it wasn't necessary to wash feet today. everything in the Bible is relevant for today. I recently experienced a foot-washing twice in one week I have been a Christian for over 30 years. the experience is still unfolding in my heart. I highly recommend this humble Act

@Mike Winger. Excellent teaching!! Love that you showed connection with Phil 2. There's also a connection by example of humility between the 2. Phil 2 Let us have the same mindset as Christ, He emptied himself and became the servant of His equal. We are not greater than our Master we should serve our equals. Then in John 13 He serves His own servants. Even moreso if God Himself serves His servants His servants should definitely serve each other. Love your teachings!

I'm blown away by Jesus' love and humiliation. That he the king of kings sitting on his throne would humble himself so low as to wash our sin. Wash our most shameful parts of the heart, the parts that we don't even want to see ourselves. He wants to enter our darkness and wash us and bring life. There were signs and rumors of a teaching of eschatology- many said it would be today. It turns out they were false profits! 😂 The end time teaching is still to come.

Thank you Mike for your teaching. It is always edifying to me! One thought that I would add for your consideration is that the condition of a 1st century foot is a metaphor for the human condition. Calloused feet, Calloused hearts; soreness and tiredness perhaps brokenness; disease, scars, perhaps shame, etc. Jesus will wash and heal it all if we will simply allow him. Praise God! Blessings to you and yours!

I was particularly edified by something Mike talks about at about the 26 minute mark. Regarding why the feet. I had had the same thoughts about how as believers, we are just visiting here, and are future citizens of heaven. It also makes me think of the passage when apostles went to preach and an entire town rejected them, to shake the dust from their feet. its sorta typology for being IN the world, but not OF the world, I think. And I love the way Mike ties all these things together, the exchange Jesus had with Peter, and also the humbleness of John the Baptist. Well heck, I was edified by the entire video! Thanks AGAIN, Mike Winger! GBY! I am discovering that there is a tradition among some Christian couples planning their weddings, to include washing each others' feet, ceremoniously. I actually was searching YT to find out if this was perhaps an aspect of the Galilean Wedding typology, or a newer wedding tradition.

I feel like Peter all the time...not in a good way. But not thinking Jesus would possibly wash my feet, as I'm such a wretch. Denying him at times before I even think about it. Wanting to take up the sword when it's not God's plan. This was such a great teaching. Thanks Mike.

Mike, you left out a passage that mentions foot washing. In 1 Timothy 5:9-10, on the enrollment of widows for finacial help, she had to have "washed the feet of the saints." For today, I take this as someone who was willing to serve others in the church not rejecting any task as beneath her. Things like scrubbing toilets, changing diapers, cleaning up after a sick person, etc. We should be willing to do any necessary task to serve others. Thanks for this great video!

amazing that the lord washed the feet of betrayers, denyers, those that wouldnt associate with him. shows we wash the feet of everyone! even our enemies and those we have aught with...so great a lesson. thats how the world will know we are christians by this love!
