The True Meaning of the Woke Agenda (thoughts for my channel)

For my Wheel of Time, Star Wars, and Rings of Power reviews, people keep telling me that the term "woke" only applies to performative activism or the poor application of progressive ideas by money-grubbing media empires. This is false. The true "woke" agenda is a political campaign stolen from the liberal left by the conservative right to turn minds against progress and sway the nation toward being "anti-woke". In this video, I define the meaning of woke as well as my stance on the subject as a "woke feminist", democratic socialist, ex-teacher, writer, marketer, and analyst. Brace yourself because the direction of this channel is going to evolve to combine my eclectic passions and work history. I am going to start making videos that explain how education, the news media, corporate policy, stories and entertainment, the economy, and rhetoric in politics intersect to shape human thought and the trajectory of our country and the world.

Do you, always! These platforms are only worth something if people use them to talk about stuff they care about. Entertainment can only distract for so long but if you "need" to speak on something, speak. I'm willing to listen.

Your politics were what made me subscribe when I found your channel yesterday. I am also a socialist wheel of time fan and I think you have the best analysis of the tv & book series, certainly at least the most interesting from my perspective, because of your political commitments. I’m excited for the expansion of your channel particularly if you continue to produce the wheel of time analyses.

Right around 14:45 you nailed. The current application of intersectionality places you in your group, based mainly on appearance and immutable characteristics. When you say people can choose where to associate themselves in terms of thought, that's true.....but they (likely) won't be accepted. When you told men to read a book, you created a category. Right? You could've just said people. The application of Intersectionality didn't help WoT on Prime, and wasn't a good advertisement for the philosophy. Most people aren't interested in a fantasy world where you have to consultant an oppression checklist (based on our world history) to decide what actions a character in a TV is allowed to make. You knew deep down Rand wouldn't get his moment in the finale. Checklist says people that look like him can't save the day. Mat's father had to be drunk who cheats, because older male can't teach younger male.......and so on. I'll keep watching your videos, I agree with most of what you said and I'm interested in what you have to say about things we may disagree on.

Please go for it! I'd love to hear your thoughts on all of this. Your professional experience, life experience, and eloquence are like the perfect storm for discussing these ideas. I really hope that more people will find and listen to you. You have such a balanced and compassionate perspective, and I think it could be very healing for a lot of people if they were able to hear you.

I'm along for the ride. The comment about WOT was interesting to me, I disliked the show but most of the content I saw here on RU-vid was criticizing the "politics" of the show and not any of the numerous issues the show actually had with the quality. I got that here from you. Looking forward to what comes next. It's always a treat when a new video drops from you.

I for one subscribed to your channel because you articulated well reflected opinions. That it was on a subject near and dear to my heart was a bonus for sure, but I m curious about what you may have to say on other topics. I may not agree with everything you say, but if an argument is made with a foundation of lived experience or more or less extensive assimilation of knowledge from literature I'm curious. Bottom line: please do share if you feel so inclined.

Hell yeah, I'm totally down for more videos like this. I am a cis het white dude teamster and would probably fall into the Democratic socialist quadrant of that graph. I am fully aware that part of the reason I enjoy this content is that I agree with it. But the larger reason is that you speak about the topics (fantasy or now IRL) with more well rounded set of information. As to your concerns, none of us are perfect and IMO you will do more good by making the videos and dealing with any mistakes than putting them off bc you might make the mistake. I'm here for it, keep it up!

I would totally watch this content. When the Wheel of Time show came out I found so many criticisms focused on it being "woke". I found it very hard to take their objections seriously when that was their only objection to the show, even though I had some reservations about it myself. Your videos put into words in a really articulate way what those objections were without bringing "woke" into it. You will probably get some pushback from some corners of the internet, but I at least will watch.

I started watching your channel because of Wheel of Time and I’ve watched and enjoyed many of the videos you’ve made. My ask, as you begin this new endeavor, is that you spend more time talking with and trying to understand the conservative / “anti-woke” viewpoint. While I learn a lot from your videos, I feel that you don’t always engage with the best arguments from the other side. I’d also love to see you engage with people you might think you disagree with to see where you might find common ground. In any case, wishing you the best in your new direction. I’ll be watching with interest.

For example, in this essay you talk about how woke is used as a marketing term where the goal is to associate woke with bad. And then “good” is associating yourself with being anti-woke, which is something that DeSantis excels at. And the actual definition of woke is something that people should support. (As an aside, it’s interesting to read people like Christopher Rufo who are open and honest about how they’re doing this to the term “CRT”.) But, I don’t think this line of thought addresses the main grievance that people have when they derisively use the term “woke”, at least with respect to pop culture. What people don’t like is a suddenly popular set of ideas that is having a noticeable impact on their media. Take an example that you’ve talked about in one of your videos: race swapping in wheel of time. One could guess that this decision was made because having a diverse cast was valued more highly than having actors that closely matched their book descriptions - even with the cost of the story’s lore. As people place different values on lore, adherence to canon, and diversity they may view the casting decisions positively or negatively. Valuing diversity and representation at the cost of the story is one example in a pattern of similar behaviors. I do think it’s fair to call out this broad pattern and give it a name. My guess is that if the show runners were asked, they would likely call themselves woke. But, they would likely deny doing “performance activism”. So, I don’t think the term “woke” is entirely inappropriate to refer to this pattern. But, I do agree with your criticism of the use of the term, and would be happy if another, less charged, term came into popular usage. Anyways, that’s what I mean by engaging in the best arguments from the other side. I didn’t mean to imply that you were unaware of the arguments, just that I love to hear why you disagree with the more intelligent arguments out there instead of with trolls and politicians trying to make a name for themselves. And thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my prior comment. I read through some of the others and, well, you’re braver than me.

@@realpauljones I made a bunch of videos on WOT so I didn't cover those points again here. I don't like how the story was totally rewritten and I am not sure the writers fully understood the original story's gender equality and feminist themes. It's hard to call what they did instead "woke" because it doesn't fit the definition. What's the awareness? I think you are asking what to call it when adaptations butcher the original material and shoehorn in racial diversity and lgbtq themes but this is hard to answer. When it's done well no one minds it. When it's done poorly it gets called "woke" but I think it is just bad writing.
@peterpirate8163
@peterpirate8163 Год назад
For me "Woke" refers to the excesses of liberal activism. It's OK to articulate one's ideals, but it's also important to be honest that for every good thing, there will be bad people who will try to use and pervert the good thing for their own benefit.

All my life, I was a liberal. Several years ago, the left swung (hard and violent) so far to the left that many of us former liberals were suddenly pushed into the "right wing." Keep that in mind when you're denouncing people's reactions to modern media. Women that have children will never identify with the hard-left ideology. Women and men with children became--out of necessity--very, very protective of their children. I would like to live in a world in which good movies and TV shows are made, but the hard-left ideology that has infiltrated modern media has made that impossible.

When I hear woke, it only has negative impact to my brain because these big companies are making it forced. I can't say if they misunderstand the terminology or they're doing it on purpose but every TV show which comes is kind of woke. Especially with the Tv examples you gave it is clear that production companies value the check boxes like, "strong female lead"," "racial diversity", ""same sex relationship" more than the actual source material. The last thing I want as gay man is to see the sexuality of main story characters being changed just so I feel represented. Giving more roles for female actors is great, but why they think that making main female character flawless, arrogant, super powerful and besting in everything the male counterparts means strong female lead. Galadriel, Moraine or the recent princess in Willow are Karens not feminists.

I took a class on feminism decades ago. It was a very angry class taught by a very angry woman. She purposely made the class harder for every man in the class in an effort to make us drop the class. So told the few that stayed after the drop period that even if we earned an A in the class she would not give us the a grade because as a proud feminist she felt that that was the least she could do to put us dirty men in her place …. That didn’t give me the best view of feminism for a long time.

Yikes. I took a class like that too. I was conservative at the time and didn't like the teacher (and she didn't like me) but looking back on it, I wish I had saved the course material because it was really good. I can't speak to her life experiences, but I suspect they may have been harrowing.

Don't worry about not having the "credentials" to make commentary on this platform. Just worry about making arguments that back that commentary up, and the rest will take care of itself. You have something to say, a style that will appeal to a particular audience (that's not a backhanded compliment BTW; nobody appeals to everyone), and you're articulate in your presentation. That's enough, and if your arguments can make someone see a different perspective then you're doing something right. Personally, I find your commentary fascinating. Largely because we have frequently reached similar conclusions but arrived there through very different premises and rationale. Or occasionally reached very different conclusions from similar premises. I can (and have in the past) nitpick some of your rationale, and we clearly have fundamentally different political outlooks (in part because I'm not American so we don't share a lot of cultural touchstones), but I'd rather keep a broad media diet than live in a bubble so will continue to support this project of yours 🙂

I am very open minded, I think. I am though a bit tired of “wokesploitation” in entertainment and media, shaming you for not liking their content because the actual writing sucks, not because you are opposed to its “wokeness”. This is causing a predictable negative reaction to the woke movement, which I think is either the goal or a result of out of touch idiots steering the ship.

Art doesn't exist in a vacuum, the evolution of your channel will simply reflect this more explicitly. I stumbled into here in my search for sober, sensible commentry on Rings of Power and found your views largely in accord with my own. I then dipped into your WoT material and discovered that it shone a light onto my vague misgivings about that project. Full disclosure: I adore Tolkien's work, but struggled with the WoT books because for me the potentially interesting , story, world building, and underlying themes are buried in a mountain of verbiage that takes far too long to get anywhere, in a prose style that I just don't get on with. I look forward to hearing your insights!

I originally watched your videos on RoP. The youtube algorithm decided to stop recommending your videos after that point. (I generally don't like or subscribe, to starve RU-vid of that data.) So, I'm responding to this video after browsing your uploaded video section as I review what I missed, having just watched your collaboration with the Sword and the Pen reflections. I like channels that discuss writing (as a writer myself - for the same reason: I want to write books that I want to read, and currently, they don't really exist), and game design (as a game designer, making my own games in Godot, based on those books.) I very much like channels that express my disgust with the current crop of media, and can break it down in terms that are separate from the political sphere, purely based on actual writing and presentation of a story (I do not vote; I cannot agree with the positions taken by any political group enough to support their rise to power.) Shad of Shadiversity and Knights Watch is one of my favorites. He has gotten a bit more political over time, as his granting of the benefit of the doubt to each new show or book continues along a very predictable trend, giving less and less reason to assume they'll do any better as time goes on. I do not agree with him religiously, as he is a Mormon, and my Christian beliefs require believing the Bible above any work of man, such as the book of Mormon... religious debate aside, I won't go into that stuff here.) I would consider his channel(s) most aligning with how I like my entertainment and these topics to be examined (from a writer's perspective, and logical reasoning.) (Shad, being Australian, also presents his viewpoints separated from the Republican/Democrat lens, having no connection to American politics.) As a person, I would fall into 3 minority categories, which I choose not to reveal, and 2 of which would be considered oppressed by the "woke", and would require their championing and help. *I "should" be on the "woke" side of things, but I am most assuredly NOT.* The stated definition of "woke" may be what they (self-defined woke people) WANT it to mean, but that's not how it has been pushed in modern culture, especially entertainment. "Woke" may have started with good intentions, but the movement has been hijacked from whatever noble origins it may have once had, and now can be most clearly identified with concepts that I cannot support. Generally, when I think of "woke", I think of a movement dedicated to: * Erasing morals ("my truth", no values or accepted standards except what they personally think is right or wrong) * Anti-Bible (closely tied to the first, they see the morals of the Bible to be oppressive and bigoted, which makes religious people oppressive and bigoted by default. And since the Bible is very clearly against "alternative lifestyles", they don't like it calling what they're doing a 'bad thing'... They consider the Bible and God to be delusions that people choose to believe in, and yet, they want to force people who do hold to the Bible's teachings to use their pronouns and accept their delusions of "gender", which violates their freedom of religion.) (as an aside here, most feminists that I've heard, think the Bible is misogynistic, when the opposite is true if one takes the time to study it... which I have. They are afforded great honor in the Bible and in how it says to treat them. There are certain passages that people like to cherry pick to make it seem worse than it is, and taken out of context, can come across badly.) * Victimhood (everyone is against the --insert minority-- and everything wrong with their lives is due to oppression, generally from white men.) * Erasing and changing history (from re-imagining classic stories and changing the morals within, or changing the races and genders of many characters, all the way to creating mockumentaries that contradict known historical fact.) * Woke people think being a white male who identifies as the male gender to be evil in general, and to be the majority, so there is no way to be racist toward them, because they're a bad group, so it's OK. Basically, "Woke" is: * "Anti-racism" taken to the extreme, becoming acceptable racism toward whites. This includes stupid race swapping in movies - the biggest indication that a movie or story isn't being created for a good reason, or with any consideration for integrity to the original property - generally, being done even at the expense of the story, or even taken to a malicious level, just to make fans of the original property angry. I am particularly annoyed by the trend of replacing ALL white women with red hair, with black women... it's a very disturbing trend, and not because I have anything against black women. * "Anti-sexism" taken to the extreme, GENERALLY doing the same "evils" to men, as they think were done to women in the past - revenge, not justice - AND presenting men as caricatures of the extreme sexist views they associated with bigoted men of the corporate world most often portrayed by shows like Mad Men. Generally, the woke's anti-sexism does NOT apply in reverse, showing sexism toward men. This includes gender-swapping characters in movies, or making the main characters "girl-bosses" and "mary sues." * Social Justice Warrior-itis. In every case of these swaps and junk, I would say: MAKE YOUR OWN new, unique properties that extoll the virtues of the characters you want to present as heroes. Hi-jacking already popular characters and series and changing the characters and stories to present your ideology is disrespectful of the source material, and implies by effect, that new characters wouldn't be received well if not tied to the original characters... an inherently racist/sexist perspective. Changing these aspects of characters shouldn't be as easy as a visual thing, either... as the stories SHOULD take their perspectives into account as important... if it's NOT important, it's NOT important to change in the first place. This is egregiously bad in fantasy and fiction in general, as the worlds do not usually match up with the real world, so the implications associated with race should not be present as "issues" that need to be presented AT ALL. There is NO POINT, aside from making people mad that you're changing the original source material, to make such changes in the first place... making such changes entirely a *"woke"* issue of the real world, being pushed into fantasy/fictional worlds, for no GOOD reason. We SHOULD all be race blind, shouldn't we? Race shouldn't matter, should it? *It's hypocritical to conduct race/sex swaps of fictional characters, based on this reasoning.* That's my take on it, watching the culture evolve over the years, especially in entertainment, but also in the business world with all the "DIE" initiatives (_D_on't _I_nclude _E_verybody (no white men allowed)). So, being "woke" is not something to celebrate. In my opinion, it is a mindset that was warned about in the Bible, and I steer clear from it, and everything it infects, as far as is reasonable, in my life. If you have a definition apart from this, you need a better way to short-hand describe yourself, or find a really good way to change the overall use of the word, and associate it more with what you consider "woke" to mean. (being aware of social injustices - I also laugh at the concept of a social justice warrior... I'm sorry if you feel that was some mythical thing... I saw plenty of them trying to defend my minority groups in laughable ways.)

2:55 One thing I'd point out about the idea of women being trained to 2 choices, that's not a training exclusive to women. Men are trained to that as well. And even more importantly, it's not so much that marriage is something we're all trained to "just because". Human beings don't survive as well alone, whether we're looking at it from an economic, emotional or most any perspective. I sure can't afford to live alone, and I sure as hell wouldn't be able to raise kids by myself. Marriage is a cultural necessity in order for individuals to get by and be productive members of society. We're only able to pretend that people can afford to live alone because we've been screwing so many other cultures for so long in order to keep our lives comparatively inexpensive, and even that economic illusion is falling apart right now. The push to emphasize the virtues of independence as better than happy family coexistence is a trap that is ruining lives.

As a European from a country whose policies many Americans would likely experience as 'left-leaning' I find your videos very interesting, and a healthy antidote to all the videos on RU-vid that zoom in on real or supposed failings in big TV productions and then attribute these to a 'woke' agenda. From reading American newspapers, and watching American media content, I gain the impression that the way in which American democracy operates (with two massive political parties dominating not only the legislative and executive branches of government, but also the judiciary) has fostered a social and cultural divide which makes it difficult to enter into nuanced discussions about sensitive issues. The 'absolutism' of the resulting debate is having an impact here, too, with some people refusing to listen to what others have to say before they draw conclusions about the validity of the other person's or group's viewpoints.

I think I am a libertarian democrat; what this means is that I believe in general expansion over the contraction of the basic freedoms granted by the US Constitution. I believe in equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or creed. Now, this may mean I am generally a liberal. I believe in keeping the middle class strong and prosperous. One thing that I think our Democratic party gets wrong is it's stance on renewable energy. You'll often hear rhetoric advocating for a 1 to 1 replacement of all CO2 emitting energy sources with renewable energy. I do not believe this is technologically and economically feasible within the next 20 years without completely destroying the middle class. One could replace 500 Megawatt coal plant with a wind-solar-battery array. The problem is that the battery part of that equation is prohibitively expensive, at the moment. A significant breakthrough is needed in the space of energy storage to make the storage mechanism dense enough and cheap enough to be economically feasible. Consider that industrial scale Lithium ion battery storage costs $150 per kWh. In order to store 3 days worth of energy at a supply rate of 500 MW, you need 500,000 kW * 72 hr --> 36,000,000 kWh of storage. That's equivalent to $5.4 Billion... that's half of what a nuclear power plant would cost at less than 25% the total power output of a standard nuclear power plant, and whereas a nuclear power plant has a life expectancy of up to 40 years, wind generators have a life expectancy of about 20-25 years, and the battery storage has a life expectancy of between 15-20 years. Basically... cheap access to energy keeps people out of poverty. If the cost of energy were to increase precipitously; everything will become more expensive. It will become more expensive to produce food, it will become more expensive to transport the food, it will become more expensive to manufacture material, from basic products to intermediate to advanced -- all will become more expensive to produce and to transport. If the financial shock to the cost of energy were severe enough -- we very well could face a scenario not dissimilar to what Russia faced during the Soviet Famine between 1932-1933. This summarizes my most significant fear with the energy policy that the Democratic party appears to be pushing, at the moment. This would not help the middle class. If the cost of energy storage drops by a factor of roughly 10 -- switching to renewables + energy-storage would be entirely feasible. Unfortunately, we are not there, yet. Now for a non-sequitur... I still like your cats -- both the grey one and your orange tabby. My wife and I keep three felines, ourselves.

@@amys0482 Nuclear power could replace the oil and gas in the power sector wholesale. The total CO2 reduction that would be realized from that would be tremendous. France has around 70% of it's power coming from nuclear power -- and is emitting far less CO2 than Germany, which has 20.2% of it's power from brown coal, 9.5% from hard coal, 10.4% from natural gas, 8.8% from biomass -- that's 48.9% of it's power from non-renewable CO2 emitting sources; wind covers 23.1% of their power needs, solar covers merely 9.9% of it's needs. It's a very strange world where converting one's forests to kindling is considered green and renewable. It takes hundreds of years for forests to grow -- we could burn through them theoretically far faster than they grow. Not to mention the habitat loss and the extinctions that inevitably occur when you choose to burn large quantities of wood chips. The oil and gas industry also funds lobbying efforts to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt regarding nuclear power; the only power source that emits no CO2 in operation that could act as a 1-to-1 replacement to coal and natural gas. Climate scientists like James Hansen think it will be crucial in solving the problem of climate change.

And yet, here I am, finding A LOT of common ground with the channel owner, who identifies as "feminist". I've found that the straw-man tactic has grown exponentially on social media, using mainly identity politics as the proxy: on any topic, your so-called association with a group trumps your _actual thoughts_ on the matter, and any discussion quickly devolves into generalised invectives. To the point that I wonder if the specific subject at hand even matters anymore. It's refreshing to find a channel that's willing to go beyond the boxes and address the ACTUAL subjects, in all their complexities. "More grease to your elbow", as we say in West Africa.

I personally can't stand woke movies and tv shows of today. As a white male i never ever had any issues with women or people of colour playing main roles in my favourite movies or tv shows. Some of my favourite actors were black or female. I can't list them all, it would be too long. One of my favourite tv shows as a young boy was - and i am not kidding - "Princess Fantaghiro". A very dreamy female led fantasy series from italy that aired during the 90s. Also my video games had a lot of female led characters in them. From Tomb Raider to Resident Evil to Dino Crisis. I also read "Jane Eyre" from Bronte and "Pride and Prejudice" from Austen and watched the films as well. Anna Karenina from Tolstoi is next on my list. But what i absolutely can't stand is the woke agenda that is so obvious, so in-your-face in every netflix or amazon production with it's modern clichee tropes. Men toxic, hetero relationships bad, sexyiness bad, white bad, women strong and capable of everything. There are so many videos here on youtube critically analyzing the "strong female lead" trope of modern movies and shows and why it does not resonate well with audiences. Maybe you could look into some of those and do a reaction video if you have something to say about that. I also do not agree with the opinion that men and women are "equal" in the terms of they are the same and can all do the same things. What i never understood about the "left" is the denial of biology, the denial of the fact that men are stronger, taller and faster on average and women can give birth and the many consequences that come with that. A female fire fighter (who is 30% less strong than a male fire fighter) just can't do the same job on the same level with the same speed as her male counterpart. Rescuing people from a burning house where you have to kick in doors demands muscle power, that's a fact. Males and female are not equal in every sense of the definition, they just aren't.

I don't agree with a lot of the things you bring up, especially regarding wokeism. There are many progressives separating themselves from wokeness because it's a bad ideology. It's not just conservatives calling something woke. There's a big difference between teaching CRT and teaching racism. Also, currently men and women are getting higher education at a rate of 40/60, which means they greatly out number men, and in many areas women are out earning men. You can't have these arguments without confronting the facts that we're leaving men behind to lift women up, which is fine for the men out there who have a lot of money, but no one wants to engage with the fact that there are far more poor men than rich ones. For instance, even I went to go back to college I looked into scholarships. But, because I'm a white man, there were none for me, even though I was basically at the poverty line. However, for women and minorites there were hundreds. The real issue I have with this is that women want good men, but we're not going to have good men by making life much harder for them. Most women I speak to don't want to engage on the difficult read topics regarding men, such as the fact that a lack of a father affects men more than women, because it's 'anti-gay parents'. But if it's true that men need strong role models (which the data supports) more than women, then we need to address fatherlessness and lack of male teachers. I personally believe that we've moved the pendulum too far at this point, and we've yet to reap the 'rewards' of that, because we're very bad at adjusting. According to Richard Reeves who studies the current state of men, the higher education divide is worse than it ever was for women v. men at the moment and yet we're doing nothing about it. Either way, it's a very interesting topic, but it's not one I've found that people who are very feminist want to engage with the more difficult conversations on. I don't think we can have a conversation about wages though without confronting some problems - women stepping away from the workforce to have kids is an obvious one. Men work more overtime and are more likely to ask for raises are another. Some of these problems aren't about gender inequality in that sense, some are difficult problems to tackle.
